Li terally and figuratively, Frances Benjamin Johnston wore many hats. At the turn of the twentieth century, she was known for her journalistic photography on subjects as diverse as coal mines, the U.S. mint, and educational institutions; for her challenge to traditional female roles as a single, self-employed professional; and as the organizing figure of an artistic avant-garde group, "The Push." Johnston's embrace of progressivism extended to her representations of schools attended by white, African American, and American Indian students between 1899 and 1902, such as the Washington, D.C., public schools, the Hampton Institute, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, and the Tuskegee Institute. Johnston's photos of African American and American Indian students at Hampton in the winter of 1899-1900 won a Grand Prix award at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900.1 These photos appeared as part of the Exposition's award-winning "Exhibit of American Negroes" organized and curated by Thomas Calloway and W. E. B. DuBois.2 The simultaneous participation of DuBois and Booker T. Washington in this exhibit-DuBois as compiler of the Georgia section and Washington as author of a monograph on Negro education-emblematizes the internal contradictions of the exhibit, of Johnston's educational photography, and of the philosophies and practices of the schools she documented. DuBois envisioned the Negro exhibit at the Paris Expo as a showcase for African Americans' self-representations of their history, social conditions, education, and literature in the spirit of "reform and uplift."3 At the same time, however, the exhibit appeared as part of an international fair through which the United States and other countries competed to promote superior national self-images.4 To realize

William Gaddis's novels stand as monumental critiques of the postmodern condition in America, using radical formal experimentation to mirror the fragmentation of identity and social decay. This paper argues that through techniques such as unattributed dialogue, chaotic narrative structure, and a pervasive theme of forgery, Gaddis creates a "carnival of fragments"-a mimetic representation of a society where authentic meaning has been replaced by economic logic and simulacra. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Jean-François Lyotard, Fredric Jameson, and Mikhail Bakhtin, this analysis examines The Recognitions and J R to demonstrate how Gaddis's aesthetic embodies the collapse of grand narratives and the commodification of human experience. By comparing his methods to those of contemporaries like Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo, the paper also addresses critical remarks of misanthropy and inaccessibility, ultimately positioning Gaddis's difficulty as an ethical stance against a culture of passive consumption. His work is presented not as a nihilistic spectacle but as a profound moral indictment, insisting that the struggle to find coherence within his chaotic text is analogous to the struggle for authenticity in postmodern America.

In the article I examine and compare two different sides of Hegel's critique of the modern contract theory. The first one encompasses Hegel's critique of Hobbes' Leviathan, while the other includes the contractarianism of Jacobinism, which, according to Hegel, had Rousseau's The Social Contract for its theoretical background. As I will show, Hegel regards both the Leviathan and Jacobinism as a misguided attempt to found the state on the arbitrariness of the subjective will. In the first place, I argue that both of Hegel's critiques rest on his sharp distinction between civil society and the state. However, in his criticism of Hobbes and Jacobinism Hegel reveals two different approaches. The former type of contractarianism results in a contingent union of individual wills presided over by transcended political authority that secures property and alleviates the natural fear of death, the latter is characterized by an attempt of the subjective will to lay claim to political authority itself, resulting in the exacerbation of mistrust and fear among individual wills. I show that, based on this critique, Hegel turns to Roman antiquity, and specifically to Roman virtue of 'courage', which is conceived of as an alternative foundation of state sovereignty. The background for this interpretation is Hegel's requirement to locate forms of trust that can serve as the basis of a political union and would not be reducible to a contract.

Установлены семантические отношения между лексемами, образующими ядро лексико-семантического поля «Познание истины» и их соотнесенность с различными гносеологическими смыслами. This paper outlines the semiotic perspectives of Saussure and Peirce and the points at which these quite different theories intersect. It considers the implications of these points of intersection for literary studies and uses the example of Oedipus Rex to illustrate the semiotic character of acts and facts.

Neo-Romantic American poet Brett Rutherford spent nearly three decades in the haunted city of Providence, Rhode Island, where the sad shades of Edgar Poe and H. P. Lovecraft are omnipresent. In this 270-page collection of poems, fiction, and journal entries from 2012-2014, the author covers the gamut of his literary and musical passions: mythology, Lovecraftian horror, political satire, classical music, classic European literature from the Middle Ages through the Romantic era. Assembled as a “farewell to Rhode Island,” this volume can be seen as a woven literary memoir. The satire is rich and thick, and Lovecraft and his fans get the worst of it in narratives about a special mental hospital ward for people who think they are H. P. Lovecraft, and a remote Pacific island where “Lovecraft” tourists inhale a mystery-drug to make contact with Elder Gods. Providence’s most famous writer is also honored straight-up in tribute poems such as “The Tree at Lovecraft’s Grave” and “Midnight on Benefit Street.” There are also poems translated from Alexander Pushkin, Anna Akhmatova, Emperor Li Yu, Martial, and Hafiz.

Arnold Wesker shows his preoccupation with the working-class conditions in Britain in many of his plays. His genuine anxiety about the lack of culture in the workers' lives and his passionate plea for the upliftment of their lives merges into an exploration of the possibility of human fulfillment in an industrial society. He believes that once these people, who form the foundations of the society, are awakened culturally, they can be stirred morally and socially also. His chief concern is the welfare of working class society. This paper deals with his play Roots which proves Wesker as a socially committed writer who consistently searches for the establishment of a humanitarian society. The play Roots tries to examine the viability of means other than socialism, such as language, knowledge, art and culture to improve the impoverished lot of the agrarian workers in post-war Britain. The object of this dissertation is to study Laila Halaby's Once in a Promised Land and Mohja Kahf's The Girl in The Tangerine Scarf. I intend to analyze the diasporic experiences of Arab American women: Khadra Shamy and Salwa Haddad. I will also analyze the characters conditions as Diasporic subjects. My main argument is a comment on how diasporic experiences are varied, a fact that makes Western prejudices and stereotypes invalid, and I also show how these women are able to deal with their sense of displacement, working as mediators between Arab and American cultures. In order to carry on such a project, I will investigate each character's experiences and their different ways of dealing with their diasporic conditions.

This paper examines the role of literary titles as narrative gateways across various genres, including novels, drama, and poetry. By analyzing titles from plays, classic novels, and poetic works, the study explores how titles serve as entry points into the thematic and emotional landscapes of diverse literary forms. Through this exploration, the paper demonstrates the significance of titles in shaping reader expectations and enhancing the interpretive experience across different genres. This study categorizes literary titles into five distinct groups: descriptive titles, misleading titles, revelatory titles, titles borrowed from other literary works, and thematic titles. The study highlights how titles enhance narrative engagement, reflect thematic depth, and create intertextual connections. Through this classification, the paper emphasizes the aesthetic, philosophical, and interpretive dimensions of titles in literary fiction, offering insights into their enduring significance.

I risultati delle ricerche vengono ora presentati all’interno di una cornice arricchita da relazioni dedicate ad altri progetti, analoghi per metodo o disciplina, e da riflessioni di ampio respiro con cui studiosi di fama internazionale contribuiscono a disegnare il quadro generale e a fare il punto sugli sviluppi della ricerca scientifica in ambito umanistico nel dialogo con le tecnologie digitali. The projects carried out at the University of Turin within the spoke Digital Libraries Archives and Philology have investigated the application of digital technologies to the humanities in a wide range of studies: Linguistics, Italian Literature, Studies on Dante, History of the Book, American Literature, Spanish literary avant-garde. The results are now shared with the public along with those resulting from other projects which have similarities on metholodogy or subject; also, scholars internationally renowned will offer views aimed at reconstructing the big picture about the current relation between the development of digital technlogies and their on scientific research. One session is finally devoted to the very important questions related to the management of projects like Changes and the impact they can have on the valorisation of the cultural heritage.

Are we being saturated with "inconsequential memoir"? That question was posed in the latest edition of The Lifted Brow (TLB), a print/online journal of new Australian and international (think US) writing and opinion that's been around long enough -since 2007 -to have received way too many submissions that it didn't want. In its sights are "the unflinching rise of the inconsequential memoir, gonzo arts criticism, selfies at funerals, inane micro stories about the textures of different chair materials when travelling on luxury holidays, etc." Yes, narrative nonfiction from the tweet to the book and everything in between is the genre de jour. These are the decades, it would seem, in which "the real" is more immediately fascinating than anything imagined. Saying a piece of writing is "wholly imagined" by the "writer at her imaginative best" does not have the cachet that saying it is based on real events or real people has. Have we in fact reached the limits of our imaginations, and given up? Now that the notion of "truth" is only ever lower-case, it would seem "true stories" are what we to read, and aim to write. We resist the relativism of there being nothing True. Digitisation has enabled this seismic cultural shift, amplifying the paradox that with the death of Truth, we long for the real. So what is this popular beast? Narrative nonfiction (NNF) is written by an "I" who is present to a greater or lesser degree in the work itself, and ideally engages with the qualities of literariness that we recognise in fiction: attention to craft and voice, to vocabulary and language, to pacing, structure and narrative arc. This paper calls for new versions, or rewritings (Lefevere 1992), of Nabokov’s 1955 (in)famous novel Lolita. The call is a reaction to the features found in Adrian Lyne’s 1997 film adaptation and the respective AVT versions of Lyne’s and Kubrick’s 1962 adaptations, which seem to support popular visions of Lolita that do not fit in with current sensitivities regarding the topic nor, it is argued, with a deeper, more careful reading of Nabokov’s work. For years, there have been calls for Lolita or some of its adaptations to be cancelled as indecent or immoral, while many of those who market the Lolita ‘brand’ do so from a very similar (smutty) interpretation of the story. This study sets out to show how Lolita can serve the purpose of denouncing child abuse and sexual exploitation, and there is ample textual evidence in the novel to prove it.

The accelerating environmental crisis has forced literature into a position of cultural witness, where narratives are no longer mere reflections of human struggles but active mediations of ecological survival. Contemporary American fiction increasingly grapples with climate change, species extinction, and environmental injustice, demonstrating that ecological devastation cannot be separated from social inequalities of race, class, and gender. This paper explores how four novels-Richard Powers' The Overstory, Jesmyn Ward's Salvage the Bones, Barbara Kingsolver's Flight Behavior, and Louise Erdrich's Future Home of the Living God-represent eco-justice and climate consciousness as interconnected struggles. Drawing from ecocriticism, posthumanism, and the environmental humanities, the discussion demonstrates that these texts reveal the ethical obligation of storytelling in an era of climate emergency. Fiction emerges not only as cultural record but also as ecological witness, urging collective responsibility and reimagining sustainable futures.

In 1775, a committee appointed by the Colonial Congress, including Benjamin Franklin, consulted with General Washington in Cambridge, Massachusetts, about designing a Colonial Flag. During their stay, they were hosted by a patriotic family, where they met a mysterious and highly educated “Professor” who advocated for Colonial justice. The Professor, demonstrating his knowledge and patriotism, joined the committee and suggested inviting the hostess, a woman of intelligence and patriotism, to join them.

A committee, including the Professor and Franklin, was formed to design a new Colonial Flag. The Professor proposed a flag with thirteen red and white stripes, symbolizing the thirteen colonies, and the Union Flag of England in the union, representing loyalty to the British government. This design was unanimously adopted and became the official flag of the cooperating American Colonies, used by the Colonial Army and Navy.

English language teachers often find themselves in a setting much like a football match where the ultimate aim is to score a GOAL: helping students learn English. To achieve this, EFL teachers draw on a wide range of practices and personal values. This study set out to explore what these teachers consider most essential in their work by tapping into their lived experiences and professional beliefs. Using the metaphor of the “Starting Eleven of a TEAM”, participants were asked to name the eleven most important elements they believe are necessary for effective language teaching. Adopting a mixed method sequential exploratory design, the research began with a qualitative phase involving 53 teachers, who shared their individual 'line-ups'—the qualities or strategies they rely on most. Through careful content analysis, 55 recurring themes were identified, which then formed the basis of a structured questionnaire. In the second phase, this questionnaire was distributed to 750 EFL teachers via online survey. Their responses not only validated the earlier themes but also allowed us to see which qualities stood out across a much larger sample. According to the findings, the “best players” in EFL teachers’ Starting Elevens included: loving the profession, caring for students, having strong knowledge of English, being open to innovation, showing friendliness, nurturing a love for English, creating a positive classroom environment, being reliable, respecting students’ voices, showing patience, and understanding learners’ needs. Together, these qualities paint a compelling picture of what today’s EFL teachers believe matters most in the classroom.

El ensayo El retorno literario de las voces antiguas en América es un breve compendio que enlista a escritores, obras, estilos y contextos, que da cuenta de la producción literaria en lenguas y culturas indígenas en el continente americano. Además, el texto representa -aunque apuradamente-una mirada actual en materia literaria, traspuesta de las lenguas indígenas a la lengua española, por parte de poetas, de narradores, de ensayistas y de dramaturgos, hablantes en lenguas vernáculas de nuestra América.

The article examines Allen Ginsberg’s spiritual path, and places his interest in Asian religions within larger cultural agendas and life choices. While identifying as a Jew, Ginsberg wished to transcend beyond his parents’ orbit and actively sought to create an inclusive, tolerant, and permissive society where persons such as himself could live and create at ease. He chose elements from the Christian, Jewish, Native-American, Hindu, and Buddhist traditions, weaving them together into an ever-growing cultural and spiritual quilt. The poet never underwent a conversion experience or restricted his choices and freedoms. In Ginsberg’s understanding, Buddhism was a universal, non-theistic religion that meshed well with an individualist outlook, and worked toward personal solace and mindfulness. He and other Jews saw no contradiction between enchantment with Buddhism and their Jewish identity.

The Grapes of Wrath stands not merely as a masterpiece of American literature but as a profound novel of protest, capturing the brutal realities of the Great Depression. Yet, its power extends beyond historical documentation; it functions as a grim prophecy. The novel meticulously charts a trajectory familiar to students of political theory: the Marxist cycle of class struggle leading to collective awareness and culminating in potential revolt. This framework provides a critical lens through which to view the novel's narrative of the Joad family's dispossession and awakening. Steinbeck's depiction of oppressed laborers and the calculated indifference of the elite finds a startling resonance in contemporary America. A landscape marked by profound wealth disparity, policy decisions that exacerbate class divisions, and the unexpected political ascent of socialist figures suggests that the "grapes of wrath"-Steinbeck's metaphor for the simmering fury of the exploited-are once again ripening in the heart of capitalist America.

There were many scandalous texts in the twentieth century, but a disproportionate number of them were biofictions. Why is this the case? By looking closely at five biographical novels from the twentieth century, and I conclude that the scandal of biofiction is that it can and does reveal what we are at our deepest and most base level of being, thereby debunking the comforting myths that humans have of themselves.

Contemporary Manichaeism is the symptom of a culture that, when faced with the anxiety provoked by change, responds not with the wisdom of becoming, but with the deadly rigidity of schism.

Organization theory is, like any other scientific program, also a form of literary project. Being able to express new ideas, images, or beliefs with the help of a concept, metaphor, or model is an accomplishment in its own right. Céline, the pen name of Louis-Ferdinand Destouches, was one of the greatest French writers of the twentieth century. Céline was part of a long-standing literary tradition that made the hyperbole a central literary technique, combining sophisticated French prose with a spoken form of language, the language of rage and mockery. Céline's famous 'three points of suspension' enabled him to present the social world as unfolding on a single plane wherein different events are connected horizontally rather than vertically. For organization theorists, the literary style of Céline is appealing because it denies any innate values and qualities but rather seeks to report what is being observed without explaining it. It's been ten years since my conversation with author Benjamin Alire Sáenz was first published in the inaugural issue of Study & Scrutiny: Research on Young Adult Literature. When I began my project to conduct conversations with authors who write for young people in 2013, I wondered what form the exchanges would take to become publishable. The editors of Study & Scrutiny believed in in what I was doing and offered a home for the conversation with Sáenz and a few more over the years. Frankly, I was confident enough about conducting the conversations with young people's literature authors that the dialogues later became part of my full-length book Teaching Culturally Sustaining and Inclusive Young Adult Literature: Critical Perspectives and Conversations.

In the 1840s, Charleston, South Carolina became the unlikely birthplace of American Reform Judaism. When Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim rebuilt its synagogue after a fire, the congregation voted — by the razor-thin margin of 46 to 40 — to install a pipe organ. To many, the organ brought dignity and modern beauty to Jewish worship. To others, it was an outrage: the sound of the Christian church invading the synagogue. The dispute split Charleston’s Jewish community, led to the creation of a rival Orthodox congregation, and eventually landed in court.
The 1844–45 trial ended with a precedent-setting ruling: “the law knows no heresy.” From that point on, synagogue practice in America would be determined by majority vote, not rabbinic authority. What began as a quarrel over music reshaped Jewish life in America, giving birth to denominationalism — Reform, Orthodox, and later Conservative Judaism.

The politics of narrative visibility remain central to how disability and neurodivergence are represented, mediated, and made legible across literary and graphic forms. unSEEN/unHEARD: Disability and Neurodivergence, a comics anthology (2025), engages these issues through a sustained commitment to collaborative storytelling, formal experimentation, and editorial reflexivity. This interview with the anthology's editors-Anas Abdulhak, Aubrey Lyn Jeppson, and C.K. Carpenter-reflects on the curatorial principles, narrative strategies, and publication conditions that structured the project. Part A, titled 'Perspective, Process, and Publishing', voiced primarily by Carpenter in a collective editorial register, outlines the alignment of disability and neurodivergence within a shared curatorial frame, the criteria guiding selection and genre, and the use of crowdfunding as both infrastructure and distribution. Part B, titled 'Affordances, Affect, and Audience', turns to individual practices; while Abdulhak discusses visual identity and poetic form, Jeppson reflects on lettering and visual rhythm, and Carpenter addresses the rendering of pain and sensory intensity, alongside strategies for public engagement. Across both sections, the interview considers how comics create narrative and formal space for embodied difference. Particularly, it contributes to scholarship on graphic narrative, disability, and neurodivergence by foregrounding editorial methods as a mode of narrative composition and collaborative representation.
