Making knowledge and information freely available, sharing it and preserving our cultural heritage: TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library provides science, research, industry and business with literature and information – in both printed and electronic form. The library is committed to openness, open access to information, publications and research data: it works to make information and knowledge more accessible, transparent and reusable.
Founded in 1959 as the German National Library of Science and Technology in the wake of the Sputnik crisis, TIB was set up to collect scientific information in a central location and to make it available to science and industry in Germany. Today, TIB is much more than just the world’s largest library in its subjects.
German National Library of Science and Technology
As the German National Library of Science and Technology as well as Architecture, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, TIB holds a world-unique science and technology collection, including knowledge objects such as audiovisual media and research data. It provides information to science and business, and supports researchers at all stages of their scientific work.
Information centre for the digitalisation of science and technology
As an information centre, TIB plays an active role in the digitalisation of science and technology: it develops robust digital infrastructures and services, and conducts its own research. As a public institution, TIB is committed to openness in science. TIB is working hard to make research data, scientific knowledge and methods more transparent, accessible and usable, and to promote open collaboration in science. It regularly hosts international conferences and specialist forums, providing opportunities for networking and exchange at the interface between science, business and the general public.
TIB as a research library
As a research library, TIB’s mission is to facilitate access to scientific information and to strengthen the exchange of knowledge through applied research and development. TIB’s research groups are dedicated to responsible data science, exploring how large volumes of data can be processed to generate new knowledge and make it accessible to the scientific community. Key areas of research: data science & digital libraries, scientific data management, non-textual material, open knowledge, open science and visual analytics.
University Library of Leibniz Universität Hannover
As the University Library of Leibniz Universität Hannover, TIB provides students, faculty and researchers with scientific and scholarly information and offers a wide range of services – both on site and digitally. The University Library has its roots in the library of the “Hannover Higher Vocational School”, founded in 1831.
TIB is a public-law foundation of the Federal State of Lower Saxony. It is a member of the Leibniz Association.
