Leibniz Joint Lab Future Libraries & Research Data

As part of the Joint Lab, we are working together with Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts in the areas of Future Libraries and Research Data.

Founded in 2023, the Joint Lab provides a framework for closer collaboration between the TIB, Hannover University of Applied Sciences (HsH), and their Institute for Applied Data Science (Data|H) in research, development, and teaching on “Future Libraries & Research Data”. This approach consolidates the expertise of the institutions and creates a forward-looking innovation cluster in the aforementioned areas. Joint activities include third-party funding projects as well as collaboratively supervised theses.

A current Joint Lab project is supporting the establishment of research data management at HsH and at universities of applied sciences in Lower Saxony in general. The Joint Lab works with researchers and data stewards across institutions and networks with other stakeholders to promote expertise in RDM. For example, the Joint Lab has initiated the Lower Saxony Data Steward Roundtable as part of the state initiative for research data management (FDM NDS), which has been held monthly since summer 2024. Moreover, the staff of the Joint Lab are involved in the development of Version 3 of the learning objectives matrix for research data management.

Other topics of the Joint Lab are the future-oriented development of academic libraries and the training of young librarians in the Information Management degree programme at HsH.

The many years of successful collaboration between TIB and HsH resulted in the establishment of a joint professorship in 2019, which laid an important foundation stone for cooperation between the institutions and was expanded with the founding of the Joint Lab.

Research Data Management

In our current project, we support the development of RDM through the following activities:

  • Since the beginning of 2024, the Joint Lab has been working on the revision of the learning objectives matrix on research data management (DINI/nestor-AG Forschungsdaten/UAG Schulungen/Fortbildungen, DALIA). In the development of the recently published version 3, the Joint Lab supported two working groups in the content-related revision of subject areas and is active in public relations work to promote the matrix (see V3 of the matrix on Zenodo). The Joint Lab is also currently working with other partners on the English translation of the matrix.
  • Together with FDM-ndsHAW, the Joint Lab has been organising the Lower Saxony Data Steward Roundtable since summer 2024, which takes place informally on a monthly basis.
  • It's clear to everyone that RDM expertise needs to be strengthened. But can you actually measure RDM expertise? The employees of the Joint Lab formulated this idea in a blog post. Perhaps it is suitable for a research project?
  • Working together with the HsH data steward, the Joint Lab employees have started to develop an RDM training course for HsH researchers and teaching staff. The first implementation is planned for the winter semester 2025/2026.

Future Libraries and training the next generation of information scientists

  • Supervision of BA theses related to current topics of the Joint Lab in the Information Management degree programme at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (BIM and BIB degree programmes)
  • Student project “Critical Cataloguing - Bias in library cataloguing systems”
  • Investigation of the status of RDM in information science curricula, outlining of RDM-specific curricula for possible subsequent use at the HsH
  • Students @ TIB - Write your Bachelor's or Master's thesis at or in cooperation with TIB
