Science communication
Bridging science and society: making research visible and understandable
For TIB, science communication is an essential tool for making its expertise and research results visible and for promoting the exchange between science and society. By communicating research results in a clear and understandable way, it contributes to making knowledge accessible, stimulating social dialogue and strengthening trust in scientific work. By presenting scientific issues in a clear and accessible way and highlighting their relevance, TIB creates a basis for greater understanding and acceptance of research and innovation.
We develop formats for dialogue between science, the public, politics and industry, thereby contributing to a knowledge-based society. With our formats, we offer a platform for networking and international exchange and bring various stakeholders into dialogue with each other.
Society
In dialogue with society, TIB emphasises its role as a research library in the digital transformation of science and society. We provide a vivid illustration of the issues that concern us by actively maintaining media relations, directly involving the public in our citizen science projects such as Remember Me! and “Places of Gestapo terror in present-day Lower Saxony”, and presenting our research activities in public exhibition and dialogue formats such as MS Wissenschaft, in the Deutsches Museum Bonn and at the Technik-Salon.
Our activities – a selection:
- Initiation and promotion of the Technik-Salon
- Organisation of events such as the Coding da Vinci Lower Saxony 2020 cultural hackathon and the “Digital Salon” series
- Participation in formats such as the November of Science in Hannover, the Day of Lower Saxony and the Leibniz Association’s Book a Scientist event
Science
TIB sees itself as a partner to the scientific community: we promote dialogue with specialist communities, network researchers and support them throughout the entire research process. Through cooperative activities, committee work, consultancy and innovative services, we facilitate and improve access to information and scientific knowledge, and actively shape the information landscape. TIB regularly hosts international conferences and specialist forums, providing platforms for networking and exchange at the interfaces between science, business and the general public.
Our activities – a selection:
- Organisation of national and international events such as the 21st International Conference on Grey Literature, the 24th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS) or the Open up – the twillo conference
- Training, workshops and webinars for the scientific community
Library community
As part of the library community, TIB drives innovation in academic libraries, promotes openness in the sense of open science and open access, and develops forward-looking services. It brings together the various players in the field of librarianship through exchange, cooperation and the organisation of events such as workshops, webinars and #vBIB, the virtual conference for digital library and information topics.
Our activities – a selection:
- Establishment of new formats such as #vBIB and the Open Science Festival
- Organisation of Open-Access-Tage (Open Access Days) and the 111. BiblioCon, as well as involvement in open-access.network
- Awards: “Library of the Year”, Open Library Badge, the TOTAL E-QUALITY award for equal opportunities and diversity, “Digitaler Ort Niedersachsen” (Digital Place Lower Saxony) for various projects
Knowledge and technology transfer
Linking knowledge, enabling innovation – TIB combines applied research with practice: through knowledge and technology transfer, it makes scientific findings and innovative technologies accessible, promotes their exchange and supports their application in science, industry, politics and society.
Our activities – a selection:
- Member of the German Council for Scientific Information Infrastructures (Professor Dr Sören Auer)
- Honorary political and social consulting as a member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) (Professor Dr Sören Auer)
- Consultation of the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence in the German Bundestag

WHAT IF …
... we were to explain the wide range of topics covered by TIB in a concise and clear way?
