Abstract

Abstract

Stunting is a condition of impaired growth in toddlers due to prolonged nutritional deficiencies. This issue is a significant global nutritional problem, particularly in poor and developing countries, including Indonesia. This study aims to examine the relationship between macronutrient intake, food security at the household level, and nutrition-related knowledge on the incidence of stunting among toddlers in the working area of Cimarga Health Center. This study employed a cross-sectional design. The sample size consisted of 99 toddlers from 11 villages within the Cimarga Health Center's jurisdiction. Analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square test. The findings reveal a stunting prevalence of 34.3% among toddlers. There is a significant relationship between household food security (p=0.014) and the incidence of stunting (OR=1.630; 95% CI=1.381-1.923). However, no significant relationships were found between energy intake (p=0.140), carbohydrate intake (p=0.544), protein intake (p=0.607), fat intake (p=0.439), and maternal nutrition knowledge (p=0.411) with the incidence of stunting in toddlers in the Cimarga Health Center area. This study underscores the importance of enhancing household food security as a primary strategy to reduce stunting despite the lack of significant relationships between macro-nutrient intake and maternal nutrition knowledge

Abstract

In Indonesia, according to the 2018 Basic Health Research report, the majority of the population above the age of 5, which is around 95.5%, still consumes vegetables and fruits below the recommend levels. When a person's knowledge and behavior are not optimal, then they will have difficulty maintaining the balance of food intake they consume. The purpose of the study was to determine the description of knowledge, fruit vegetable consumption behavior and nutritional status in class X students at SMA Negeri 1 Porong. This was a descriptive study. The Sampling method used was simple random sampling  with a total samples size of  40 people. The results showed that the knowledge level of respondents in the poor category was 18 adolescents and in the good category was 11 adolescents. Most adolescents (34) exhibited poor vegetable consumption behavior, while the majority (21) demonstrated good fruit consumption behavior. The nutritional status of most respondents had good nutritional status as many as 25 adolescents. In Conclusion, adolescents in SMA Negeri 1 Porong have knowledge about vegetables and fruits in the poor category, poor vegetable consumption behavior, good fruit consumption behavior and good nutritional status.

Abstract

Background: The worldwide issue of stunting, which is prevalent up to 20.5%, can have an impact on future productivity and health Objectives: to determine the risk factors and prevalence of stunting in children aged 0-23 months in Palu City, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional analytical design in eight sub-districts of Palu City (January-June 2024), involving 516 pairs of mothers and children aged 0-23 months. Data were collected by 20 enumerators under the supervision of the Health Office, through interviews related to breastfeeding, complementary feeding, infection history, and other variables as well as anthropometric measurements using length Board Measuring calibrated tools. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis, chi-square test bivariate, and logistic regression. Data collection is carried out through the Cobocollect platform. Results: Logistic regression analysis shows several important findings. Children of mothers with low education (OR=1.9), male children (OR=2.2), low birth weight (OR=3.1), and families with more than 3 children (OR=2.1) have a higher risk of stunting. Of the 516 children, 20.5% experienced stunting. These findings highlight the importance of maternal education, gender, birth weight, and number of children as risk factors for stunting, as well as their implications for health policies. Conclusions: Factors such as low birth weight, male sex, the number of children over three, and mothers' education of less than 9 years significantly increased the risk of stunting in children. Targeted nutrition interventions for mothers with low education and families with many children are essential to reduce the prevalence of stunting in Palu City.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between iron supplement consumption, dietary intake, nutritional status, and anemia among adolescent girls in Banawa, Donggala Regency. A cross-sectional analytical design was applied, involving 231 female students aged 12–15 years from SMP Negeri 3 and SMK Negeri 2 Banawa. Stratified sampling was used, and data were collected through interviews using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), anthropometric measurements, and hemoglobin testing via Point of Care Testing (POCT). Nutrient intake was assessed based on 80% adequacy of the Indonesian Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), while anemia was defined as hemoglobin levels <12 g/dL. Compliance with iron supplementation was determined using a median-based scoring method. The results revealed a high anemia prevalence (71.0%) among participants. Although 61.0% were compliant with iron supplementation, no significant association was found between supplement compliance and anemia status. Likewise, protein and iron intake showed no significant relationships. However, vitamin C intake was significantly associated with anemia (p = 0.001), indicating its crucial role in iron absorption. Nutritional status and iron inhibitor intake were not significantly related to anemia. The findings highlight the need for integrated school-based nutrition programs focusing on improving vitamin C intake and promoting effective iron supplementation practices.

Abstract

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the elderly, mainly due to unhealthy diets and metabolic risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes. This nutrition education and dietary consultation program aims to increase the understanding and change of behavior of the elderly in implementing a healthy diet to prevent heart disease. The activity was held for one month in Gubeng District, Surabaya, involving 125 seniors, lecturers, and students. Intervention methods include interactive education, simulations, and personalized nutrition consultations. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores, changes in positive attitudes, and adoption of a healthier diet based on statistical analysis of the Paired t-Test and Wilcoxon Test (p < 0.05). Knowledge Improvement: The average knowledge score increased from 65.2 ± 10.1 to 82.7 ± 8.5, reflecting an increase of 26.9% (p < 0.05). Improved Attitudes: 85% of participants switched to a more positive outlook on adopting a heart-healthy diet, with the Likert scale rating increasing from 3.2 ± 0.8 to 4.5 ± 0.6 (p < 0.05).  This program effectively improves dietary knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among the elderly in Gubeng Regency.
