In delivering software, conducting research, and providing leadership in scholarly communication, the Public Knowledge Project depends upon strong support from community members who value open infrastructure solutions. In addition to SFU’s administrative support and the revenue generated by PKP Publishing Services, PKP relies on three additional sources of support to finance software development, educational initiatives, and research program.

Development Partners
Through direct and in-kind support, institutions partner with PKP to set priorities and determine new features for PKP’s suite of open source publishing platforms.

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTORS
Libraries and aligned organizations financially support the development of PKP’s open access initiatives and open infrastructure.

RESEARCH FUNDERS
PKP’s research initiatives are underwritten by leading funding agencies in the social sciences and related fields, often in collaboration with researchers from outside of PKP, as well as with students at a variety of institutions.

The University of British Columbia has been a PKP Development Partner since 2016. Allan Bell, Associate University Librarian Digital Programs and Services, UBC Library, explains why:
“Through the partnership, UBC Library is able to participate in discussions about the future directions of open scholarship in libraries and to invest in technology that enhances research and learning; this in turn helps us to increase the visibility and accessibility of UBC research. The partnership also enables us to strengthen our relationship with Simon Fraser University Library, which provides the administrative home for PKP, as well as with PKP’s other development partners and the members of PKP’s governance bodies.”

Why PKP?
For its supporters, PKP offers an investment opportunity in a sustainable scholarly communication future that promises greater openness and innovation under the academic community’s direction.
Extending research’s reach
The PKP team works to honor and expand people’s right to know through research and scholarship, even as we recognize that is not the only form that knowledge takes.
