Abstract

The purpose of the research was to investigate the effects of PEG 400 addition on the characteristics of bioplastic polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). PHA was obtained by cultivating Ralstonia eutropha on hydrolysed sago starch substrate using fed batch method for approximately 96 hours. The biomass concentration obtained was 4 g/L with PHA yield 20-30% of dry cell weight. The bioplastic was formed with solution casting method in which chloroform was used as solvent and PEG 400 was used as plasticizer. The concentrations of PEG 400added were 10, 20, and 30% (w/w), respectively. Bioplastic properties which were tested were tensile strength, elongation to break, density, thermal properties, cristalinity, and functional group. The addition of plastisizer tend to increase tensile strength and elongation to break, but decrease density, cristalinity and melting point. Bioplastic with 30% PEG 400 addition gave the best results. Bioplastic with 30% PEG 400 gave a value of tensile strength of 0.083 MPa; elongation to break of 0.881%; density of 0.7881 g/cm3;  melting point of 158.95 ac; and cristalinity of 44.58%. With these properties, the resulted bioi plastic may be used for surgical strings. Keywords: Bioplastic, Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), Ralstonia eutropha, hidrolysed sago starch, PEG 400

Abstract

ABSTRACT Silk agro industry plays an important role in Indonesian economic since it enables to create business opportunity, absorb many employments, and reduce poverty. A strategy of silk agro industrial development can be done through a cluster approach in order to increase the competitiveness. This research was intended to develop a model of silk agro industrial development system through exploration of several important factors such as core industry, geographic concentration and institution. Data was collected through literature study from several linkage institutions, and direct interview with experts from government officers, University lectures and businessmen. Data was processed in order to develop model of silk agro industry development. The model consists of (1) cluster location model, (2) core industry development model, (3) institution development model, (4) financial development model, and (5) price harmonization model. Model and data were integrated in a computer based Decision Support System (DSS) called AI SUTRA.  The results of the research were as follow: (1) the cluster location was Wajo, South Sulawesi, (2) the core industry is silk weaving industry, (3) the main problems in core industry were technology obsolete, low quality of product,   and limited capital, (4) The proposed institution was “Unit Layanan Pengembangan Usaha (ULPU)”. Stakeholders of ULPU were Central, Province and Regional Government, Association, Cooperative, Research and Development Institution, Importer, University, Exporter, and facilitator. (6) Feasibility analysis gave the results that farmer producing cocoon, silk spinning industry, silk weaving and batik industry were feasible to be developed since all of them have NPVs>0, IRRs were higher than the market interest rate and  Net B/Cs > 1. Integration of cocoon producer, spinning, weaving and batik industries in the cluster may harmonize their incomes. By using calculation  with constant batik price (Rp 560.000/piece), B/C 1.34, the price of cocoon, silk yarn and silk woven can be raised. Then, it will enable to increase their incomes. Keywords : competitiveness, model, cluster, core industry, institution.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe oil palm trunks become a waste from the rejuvenation of the oil palm plantation. The extraction of the oil palm trunk can produce about 4.7% of starch.  The starch extracted was characterized for its physical and chemical properties and compared to the commercial starch of sago and tapioca. The starch of oil palm contains fat (0.37%), ash (0.68%), fiber (1.78%) which were higher than those of sago and tapioca.  However, the amylose content (28.76%) of the oil palm starch was lower. The gelatinization temperature of oil palm starch (77oC) was similar with that of sago, but it was higher than that of tapioca.  The whitish degree (83.02%) and the paste clearance (15.4% T) of the oil palm’s starch were lower than sago’s and tapioca’s.  Based on the amylograph analysis, the oil palm starch was categorized normal and had final viscosity which was higher than commercial starch. It was indicated that oil palm starch was easily to be retrograded and suggested to be  used as an adhesive material.Key words: oil palm trunk starch, physico-chemical properties

Abstract

ABSTRACTSmall scale industries are gaining importance and their contribution to pollution problems cannot be ignored. One of small scale industry having the potential to cause environment problems is centralized of small scale tapioca industries. Small scale industries typically have limited space for the installation of treatment system. In addition, often small scale industries are only marginally profitable, so waste treatment investment may threaten their viability. This problem can be solved by applying cleaner production strategy. This research studies the potentials of cleaner production application and formulating alternatives of cleaner production strategy in order to develop centralized small scale tapioca industry in Ciluar. The cleaner production alternatives which are potential to be applied are good housekeeping, usage of “gobegan”extractor, washing of sedimentation  tank daily, water controling, and worker supervision. The investment of these alternatives is Rp 10.052.000 and pay back period (PBP) one year seven manths. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis shows that technology is the most important factor to maximize crude tapioca production efficiency by applying cleaner production. The priority of cleaner production program from AHP analysis is socialization and training of cleaner production application, integrated waste management, and socialization and training of crude tapioca quality increasing procedures. Keywords : cleaner production, small scale industry, tapioca, AHP

Abstract

Palm oil industrial cluster development in Sei Mangkei is a step to realize the downstream programme, increase the added value and competitiveness through integrated management. To optimize the development, it is necessary to make the planning starting from the selection of potential industries, as well as calculate how optimal capacity, with the availability of raw materials as constraints.  The selection of products is done with the exponential comparison method with the result that industrial cooking oil, margarine, basic oleo chemicals, surfactants, biodiesel, industrial soap, liquid soap, shampoo and detergents, as well as biogas and animal feed were potential for development in the industrial park. The goal programming analysis was performed to determine the optimal industrial  capacity that provide maximum benefit and labour, and minimal waste produces. Based on the optimization analysis, the profits target was achieved and the largest profits derived from basic oleochemical industry, margarine, cooking oil, and soap bars. While labour targets were not achieved, because labour absorption  less than 80% of the target. The target of waste was achieved,  and the largest proportion of liquid waste was produced by cooking oil and basic oleochemicals industry. This model is expected to illustrate the capacity calculation model of industry in other cluster development. Keywords: goal programming, industrial park, optimization, palm oil industrial cluster,
