Abstract

The aim of this research was to obtain the empirical evidence about the effect of using video tutorial in teaching writing procedure text at seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Pematang Siantar. The method used in this research was a quantitative method and the research design was a quasi – experimental. The sample of the research was seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pematang Siantar. They were VII-9 as the experimental class and VII-11 as control class. Each class consisted of 30 students which was selected by purposive sampling technique. The experimental class was taught by using Video Tutorial while in the control class was taught without Video tutorial. Data collection instruments used writing tests for pre-test and post-test, Jacob et al writing assessment rubric was used in this research, which includes two aspects : content and organization. The result obtained from this research showed it was proven from the mean score of the post-test of students in experimental class was 79,56 and the mean score of pre-test was 49,36 that were taught by using video tutorial which was improved better than the control class, pre-test in the control class was 60,63 and post-test in the control class was 71,73. Moreover, the result of the t-test calculation was 2,865 which is higher than that T count < T table where T count was 2,865 and T table for df 58 = 1,672 ( 2,865 > 1,672) than Hypothesis Alternative (Ha) accepted and Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, the use of Video Tutorial gives significant effect in teaching writing Procedure Text at seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Pematang Siantar.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the Learning Style of EFL Learners in Reading Comprehension at Smpn 2 Pematangsiantar. This research was conducted using qualitative methods. Qualitative methods are research that collect data in the form of words or images, not numbers. This research was carried out in September 2023 and was carried out at SMPN 2 Pematangsiantar which is located at Jl. Rajamin Purba, Sofa Hill, Siantar Sitalasari, Pematangsiantar City, North Sumatra. The primary data in this research are students. Secondary data in the form of research journals, relevant books. This data was obtained from interviews with research participants, namely class IX students of SMP Negeri 2 Pematangsiantar for the 2023/2024 academic year. Researchers conducted research in class IX-11. Data collection is an important step in research, because the main aim of research is to obtain data. The procedures applied to analyze data are data reduction and data display. Researchers found three dominant student learning styles, namely: visual learning style, auditory learning style, then kinesthetic learning style and one combination of learning styles, namely: kinesthetic-auditory/musical. There are three students who have a visual learning style. After that, there were three students who had an auditory learning style, then there were two students who had a kinesthetic learning style, and finally there was one student who had a kinesthetic-auditory (musical) learning style.

Abstract

The researcher decided to implement TikTok video in this research. The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using TikTok on students’ vocabulary mastery in seventh grade at SMP Negeri 9 Pematang Siantar academic year 2023/2024. This research used quasi-experimental design with quantitative method. In this research, the reseaarcher used two classes with the name experimental class and control class. The researcher took the population of seventh grade with the total number was 265 students. For the sample, in the experimental class and control class the number of students were same, there were 30. The sample for experimental class was VII-1 and the sample for control class was VII-2, students who were selected using purposive sampling technique. And to analyze the data, the researcher used the t-test formula to determine whether using TikTok had an effect on student’s vocabulary mastery. After analyze the data, the result of this research showed the mean score pre-test and post-test in the experimental class and the mean score of the pre-test and post-test in control class. While in the experimental class mean score pre-test was 60,5 and post-test was 80,3 And in the control class mean score pre-test was 60,16 and post-test was 70,66 For standard deviation in experimental class was 1.424,16 and standard deviation in control class was 867,5. After calculating the mean and standard deviation from both of class, the researcher calculating used t-test formula, the result was the t-test must highest from t-table with 5% level significance (5,761 > 1,697). Based on the finding of this research, the researcher conclude that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. So, it can be concluded that using TikTok has an effect on students’ vocabulary mastery especially in seventh grade.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out whether there is a significant effect of using the audio-lingual method on the listening comprehension of tenth grade students at Nommensen Private High School, Pematang Siantar Campus. In addition, the aim of this research is to make teachers consider appropriate methods that they can implement in the classroom to teach students about listening comprehension. Therefore, teachers must pay attention to the appropriate methods that can be used to achieve maximum listening comprehension indicators. Another aim of this research is to help students understand listening comprehension material using the Audio Lingual Method and to entertain them with various ways of teaching in the learning process by providing them with music or other educational entertainment to increase their motivation in learning and creating. they are interested in listening to the material to achieve good habits from the learning process in the classroom which is the main goal of the Audio-Lingual Method. This research is quantitative research with the form of an experimental design. This research involves two variables; there is an independent variable, namely the Audio Lingual Method (X) and a dependent variable, namely students' listening comprehension (Y). In this research, the researcher used a purposive sampling technique to select the sample, and decided class X-3 as the Experiment Class and X2 as the Control Class to be the sample for this research where the number of students in the class was 30 students. Researchers also use research instruments which are divided into two instruments, namely instrument blueprints and instrument calibration. Researchers use tests, observation, and documentation as data collection methods. After calculating the average and standard deviation of the two classes, the researcher uses the t-test formula, the results of the t-test must be higher than the t-table with a significance level of 5% (2.265 > 1.680). Based on the research findings, the researcher concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. So, it can be concluded that the use of the audio lingual method influences the listening comprehension of tenth grade students.

Abstract

Lesson study training helps teachers improve their professional competencies, including pedagogical and social skills. Through collaboration and reflection, teachers can learn from each other's experiences, which in turn improves their teaching skills. This community service method uses a training and mentoring approach. This service aims to socialize and develop teachers' skills in designing effective learning through lesson study. The conclusions of the service conducted by the team at SD Negeri 11 Siparmahan are as follows: This socialization succeeded in increasing teachers' understanding of the importance of lesson study as a tool to improve teaching practices. Teachers are now more aware that collaboration and reflection are the keys to achieving quality learning; Through collaborative lesson planning and implementation activities, teachers have developed skills in designing better lesson plans that meet students' needs; This activity has also created a collaborative culture among teachers where they support each other and share experiences. This is important for building a sustainable learning community in the school environment; The reflection process after the implementation of the lesson study allows teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching strategies used and to find solutions for future improvements; The improved ability of teachers to design effective lessons is expected to have a positive impact on student learning outcomes. More interactive and relevant learning will increase student motivation and involvement in the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of using the TikTok application as a learning medium on the speaking ability of the eleventh-grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar. Speaking is one of the most essential skills in English learning, yet many students still struggle with pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. Conventional methods relying heavily on textbooks often fail to create an engaging and interactive environment, which leads to low motivation and limited speaking practice. TikTok, as a popular social media platform among teenagers, offers interactive features such as short videos and the “duet” function that can potentially enhance students’ participation and confidence in speaking. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group. The sample consisted of 60 students from two classes, selected through purposive sampling. The experimental group was taught speaking using TikTok, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. A speaking test focusing on invitation expressions was administered to both groups before and after the treatment. Students’ performances were assessed based on five criteria: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group showed greater improvement compared to those in the control group. Statistical analysis using a t-test demonstrated a significant difference between the post-test results of both groups, indicating that the use of TikTok had a positive effect on students’ speaking ability. The results suggest that TikTok can serve as an effective learning medium to enhance students’ speaking performance, increase motivation, and support the implementation of innovative teaching strategies in English language classrooms.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the effect of applying the Discovery Learning method on students’ reading comprehension achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Loura in the academic year 2022/2023. The study applied a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The population was all the students of class XI IPA, and the sample consisted of two classes: class XI IPA 1 as the experimental group and class XI IPA 2 as the control group. The instrument used was a reading comprehension test in the form of multiple-choice questions. Data were collected through a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The validity and reliability of the instrument were tested before its use. Data analysis was carried out using statistical calculations, including the t-test formula, to compare the mean scores of the experimental and control groups. The results of the research showed that the mean score of the experimental group after treatment was significantly higher than that of the control group. The statistical analysis confirmed that the application of the Discovery Learning method had a positive effect on improving students’ reading comprehension achievement. In conclusion, the Discovery Learning method can be considered an effective teaching strategy in enhancing students’ reading comprehension, and it is recommended for English teachers to implement this method in the classroom.
