Abstract

Fasciolosis is one of the endemic parasitic diseases in Indonesia and causes significant economic losses. Fasciola gigantica is the main species found to infect livestock. This research aimed to describe the morphology of F. gigantica histologically using hematoxylin and eosin staining as well as ultrastructure morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Besides, the study was also carried out to determine the prevalence and estimation of economic losses due to fasciolosis in Berau Regency. The histological identification of flukes morphology found several organs including oral sucker (OS), ventral sucker (VS), cirrus (C), genital pore (GP), uterus (U), ovary (O), tegument (Te), testis (T), and caecum (C). In this study, ultrastructure morphology was divided into anterior and midbody region. In the anterior region, there are an oral sucker (OS) with a diameter of 304.5 µm and a ventral sucker (VS) with a diameter of 571 µm. It was also found the anterior spine with a width of 25.4 µm and a height of 22.8 µm. In the midbody, the spine has a width of ± 26.7 µm and a length of ± 38.9 µm leading posteriorly. Postmortem examination results showed that the prevalence of fasciolosis in Berau regency was 21.65% or 34 of 157 cows which were positive with an estimated loss of 228,656,475.00 IDR/16,450 USD (1 USD=13,900 IDR). The amount of loss due to fasciolosis must be a particular concern in carrying out control and prevention measures. Histology and ultrastructure morphology can become a reference in the development of anthelmintic testing that has been used so far in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the species, prevalence, and infection degree of endoparasite in the digestive tract of laying hens in Suruhwadang Village, Kademangan District, Blitar Regency. Ninety-six fecal samples were taken from four different farms. Twelve samples of chicken feces aged 20-50 weeks and twelve samples of chicken feces > 50 weeks were taken from each farm. The examinations taken in this study are fecal examinations using native, sediment, and floating methods. The results of identification of digestive tract endoparasites found consisting of Ascaridia galli (68.75%), Heterakis gallinarum (53.12%), Strongyloides avium (5.21%), Trichostrongylus tenuis (6.25%), Eimeria maxima (51,04%), and Eimeria acervulina (3,12%). The highest average degree of worm egg infection was found in layers >50 weeks of age of 373.96 ± 450.41 while the highest average degree of infection of protozoa was found in layers aged >50 weeks of 296,87 ± 600,92. The results of the Chi-Square test showed that there was no significant effect of the difference in the age of laying hens in the layer phase on the prevalence of digestive tract endoparasites, both worm egg and protozoan infections (P>0.05). The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed that there was a significant effect of the difference in the age of the laying hen in the layer phase on the degree of worm egg infection (P<0.05), but the difference in age of the laying hen in the layer phase did not significantly affect the degree of protozoa infection (P>0,05).

Abstract

This study aims to obtain information and data on the prevalence of scabies in cats and rabbits at the Animal Hospital of East Java Livestock Service Surabaya. The data obtained in this study are data on visitors or pet owners to the Animal Hospital in January - December 2021. The type of research is descriptive research. The data obtained tabulated and analyzed with a prevalence test and discussed descriptively. The prevalence of scabies in cats and rabbits at the study was 5.62% or 76 positive of 1352 visiting clients. Forty five of them were cats (59.21% of 76) and 31 were rabbits (40.79% of 76). Scabies attacks animals in the nose, mouth and ears. Scabies also causes weight loss, hair loss, irritation, anemia and even death. Scabies treatment at the research location is by cleaning the scars caused by scabies, applying an ointment containing 5% permethrin, and giving anti-histamine and anti-parasitic as well as providing supportive therapy in the form of grooming using shampoo containing anti-ectoparasites. Pet owners are expected to follow the advice given by animal hospital staff who have provided knowledge in terms of controlling and preventing Scabies.

Abstract

Trematode worm infections in dairy cattle have not been widely reported in various regions in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the prevalence and degree of trematode worm infection in Friesian Holstein dairy cattle at KUTT Suka Makmur, Pasuruan. The research design used survey study and cross-sectional study. The study was conducted in July-September 2023. The number of samples taken was 100, which were selected from proportional random sampling of four sub-districts, namely Grati, Nguling, Lekok, and Lumbang, with the age ranges under a year, 1-2 years, and above 2 years. The sample were examined using the sedimentation method and Flukenfinder® method. Positive samples were further examined using the McMaster method to determine the number of worm eggs per gram of feces. The results of this study obtained a prevalence of 54% with low and moderate degrees of infection. The trematode worm species found through fecal examination were Fasciola gigantica and Paramphistomum cervi. The results of chi square statistical analysis showed that sample examination method and age were related to the prevalence of trematode worms, yet location was not related to the prevalence of trematode worms. The results of kruskal wallis statistical analysis showed that age and location influence the degree of trematode worm infection.

Abstract

Helminthiasis can be transmitted from animals to humans (zoonosis). Helminthiasis can cause cutaneus larva migrants, visceral larva migrant, and occular larva migrants. Cats are the most easily animals can found in public areas. cats have a habit of defecating in areas, such as dusty soil, gardens, sand pits, trash cans, and even children's playgrounds. Proximity of human life with a stray cats is one of the potential that can helminthiasis transmited to humans. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of helminth eggs (species and number) observed in cat feces contaminating public areas in Surabaya. Cross-sectional study have been observations cats existense and examination laboratory of 180 cat fecal samples were collected from canteens, markets, villages, schools, and parks across 5 areas in Surabaya. Helminth eggs present in fecal samples were identified using direct smear, sedimentation, and flotation methodes, and quantified as fecal egg count (eggs per gram of feces) with McMasster method. The test results positive for helminthiasis if found one or more types of helminth eggs in fecal samples. Helminth eggs were present in 68 (37.8%) of the 180 cat fecal samples contaminating public areas in Surabaya. Results of chi-squared analysis confirmed the prevalence of helminth eggs in cat fecal samples contaminating canteen, markets, villages, schools, and parks in Surabaya (p > 0.05). The species causing environmental contamination included Ancylostoma sp. eggs,  Toxocara cati eggs, and Toxascaris leonina eggs. The level of environmental contamination, as assessed using ANOVA, was 200 eggs per gram of feces.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the mutation of amino acid, nucleotide homology, phylogenetic tree, epitope prediction of Hemagglutinin-Neuraminidase protein Newcastle Disease (ND) Virus isolated from traditional market around Surabaya. Samples were from 37 chicken with cloacal swab and one positive samples for control (LaSota). Samples were inoculated on embyonate chicken eggs and identified with HA test confirmed with HI test. Positive samples processed by PCR using forward and reverse primer with 503 bp RNA target. The PCR result then analyzed with sequencing. Result of sequencing analysis showed that theres similiarity between samples amino acid and vaccine isolate its effect the percentage of nucleotide homology and phylogenetic relation between isolate. Epitope NGAANNSGWGAPIHDPDYIGG have high immunogenic value at all of isolate which good as vaccine candidate.
