Abstract

Abstract : Spatial thinking is one of the way to help children understand more about number sense.  In this design research, I observe the relation between the spatial thinking and emergence number sense. I look at children will use their spatial configuration of objects and determine the amount of it without counting. It will help children with low ability in number sense understand more the numbers through spatial thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a mathematics handout based on local wisdom nuanced to increase the mathematical problem-solving skill of the Secondary students. This research is motivated by the student?s ability to solve the social arithmetic problem. This study used four phases of developmental research such as Investigation, Design, Realization, and Test, Evaluation, and Revision. The characteristics of local wisdom were acquired within the design or context in the mathematics handout to develop secondary students problem-solving skills. The results show that the students do the stages of problem-solving by Polya, get the maximum score and show students? positive responses in the questionnaire given. Therefore, it met the proper handout criteria such as valid, practice, and effective. In the future studies, we encouraged to develop learning materials which have a guide to do phases of problem-solving and apply the way to solve some problems in mathematics.

Abstract

Spatial thinking is critical to mathematical thinking and achievement, important not only in mathematics learning and but also important in education research. In order to have similar opportunity in supporting primary students? spatial literacy on reasoning, it needs a clearer picture of primary students? spatial literacy on reasoning in solving Mathematical Literacy Tasks (MLT) as the aim of this study. The characteristic of MLT satisfies the PISA framework and considering Context, Content (shape and space), Process as well as level of problem. Researcher only focuses on three MLT problems. The result is about description of analyzing three participants? solution of MLT based on how they use kinds of spatial literacy on reasoning strategies. Dimensional reasoning is effective but the students didn?t use it often, the students seem like unfamiliar with these strategies. The responses suggest that because of the teacher didn?t use dimensional strategies in the class, so the student commonly didn?t use it often. Therefore, students need experiences that supporting their reasoning of spatial objects and its relationship and teacher can help students by using learning models, methods, or strategies in the class so their mathematical literacy (spatial literacy on reasoning) better than before.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the cognitive process employed in problem-solving related to the concept of area conservation for seventh graders. Two students with different mathematical ability were chosen to be the subjects of this research. Each of them was the representative of high achievers and low achievers based on a set of area conservation test. Results indicate that both samples performed more cyclic processes on formulating solution planning, regulating solution part and detecting and correcting error during the problem-solving. However, it was found that the high achiever student performed some processes than those of low achiever. Also, while the high achiever student did not predict any outcomes of his formulated strategies, the low achiever did not carry out the thought process after detecting errors of the initial solution gained. About the concept of area conservation, the finding also reveals that within the samples’ cognitive processes, the use of area formula come first before students decided to look for another strategy such as doing ‘cut-rotate-paste’ for the curved planes, which do not have any direct formula. The possible causes of the results were discussed to derive some recommendation for future studies.

Abstract

In this study, we aimed at demonstrating the power of Variation Theory in exploring the local situation of Indonesian teachers and Teacher Professional Development program. The projection of Variation theory regarding the enterprise of teaching results on the need of sensitivity of students and exemplary teaching strategy that differ with teachers teaching style. Besides, It requires more opportunities for teachers to understand the critical feature of object of learning. By sequence of activity that elaborating variation theory and regards the local situation might imply the improvement of students learning. Keywords: Variation Theory, Teacher Professional Development, Indonesia DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.5.2.1497.127-137

Abstract

Knowing the mathematization process was important for teacher. In solving problem, students were using their mathematization process. This research aimed to describe the horizontal and vertical mathematization process of junior high school students with high mathematical ability in solving contextual problem of fraction. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects was determined by mathematical ability test (TKM). Thirty four students of chosen class were given mathematical ability test (TKM). Then, they were divided into three groups based on the ability which were high ability, medium ability, and low ability group. Researcher took one subject from high ability group to be research subject. Then, researcher gave the profile mathematization process test (TPPM). The semi-structured interview was utilized to invstigate the answered of TPPM. The result of this research were: the high mathematical ability subject passed through all of activity in horizontal mathematization such as; identified the mathematical concept that is relevant to the problema; represented the problem in different ways; found the relations between problem language and the formal mathematic symbol; found the regularities, relations, pattern in problem; transfered the problem into mathematical model. The high mathematical ability subject also passed through all of activity in vertical mathematization such as; used the variety of different representation; used symbols, language, and formal mathematical process; made adjustments and development of mathematical models, combined, and united various models; created a mathematical argument; and generalized.
