Abstract

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle) is one of the important agricultural commodities for residents in the Bolo village, Gresik. The resident of Bolo Village owns an average of 1/4 hectare of lime plantations. However, the price of lime is not stable. In the harvest season, when conditions become surplus in the market, lime prices often drop, causing losses for the farmers. Lack of knowledge about lime product processing is also an obstacle in the utilization and processing of crops. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of citrus farmers in Bolo Village to utilize and process lime crops into Home Industry products, so they do not suffer losses when the lime price drops. Activities are carried out through learning using interactive lecture methods and training through product manufacturing demos. The successful indicator was carried out by evaluating the participants' level of understanding before and after the activity. The training activities significantly increased the participants' knowledge and experience. In addition, this activity also obtained data on the needs of lime farmers. It is hoped that this data can be used for the continuation of the next activity or can also be used by the local government, which wants to help advance agriculture and product diversification in the village of Bolo.

Abstract

This service activity is motivated by efforts to maintain health after the Covid-19 pandemic. The community carries out preventive efforts by providing stocks of their medicines at home. The culture of storing medicines in the household requires proper drug management to prevent drug damage due to improper storage, drug use errors, and environmental pollution due to errors in handling damaged or expired drugs. The pharmacist's role is vital in providing drug management education to the community. Another preventive effort undertaken by the community is to maintain a healthy body by applying a diet where fast food currently contains a lot of Food Additives (BTP), which can threaten long-term public health. For this reason, people need to get an education directly, so they are wise in using BTP. The solution is to educate the public regarding managing household medicines and healthy food for parents and guardians of RA Al Manshur Play Group (KB) students in Bojonegoro. Activities are packaged in counseling methods and training/practice activities. The expected outcome of the activity is an increase in the understanding of guardian parents, as indicated by an average post-test score of >65 with an increase in score of >10% compared to the pretest. By increasing the understanding of parents and teachers about managing medicines and healthy food in the family, it is hoped that conditions of good health and well-being in society will be achieved.

Abstract

Numerous studies have documented the potential of coffee to aid in asthma prevention. Nevertheless, research into how coffee influences asthma management has not been available. One known mechanism by which asthma medications work involves inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) activity. This study aims to determine the potency of Coffea canephora var. Robusta extract (CRE), Coffea arabica extract (CAE), and caffeine are the primary isolates against 5-LOX activity. Extraction was performed by a reflux procedure using 96% ethanol with a sample-total solvent ratio of 1 : 10, an extraction time of 1 hour, and the extraction was conducted in triplicate. Fractionation was carried out by liquid-liquid partition using a chloroform-water system. Caffeine further purification was performed by the sublimation method, and the inhibition of 5-LOX activity was evaluated using the spectrophotometric method at λ = 234 nm. Apigenin was used as a positive control. From the experiment conducted, the IC50 of the CRE, CAE, caffeine, and apigenin against 5-LOX was 32.2 ± 1.4, 42.1 ± 2.3, 14.3 ± 1.6, and 7.4 ± 1.7 µg/mL, respectively. Continued efforts to isolate bioactive compounds from coffee extract led to the discovery of caffeine, which exhibited a more potent inhibitory effect on 5-LOX. The inhibition of 5-LOX activity by caffeine occurs in a non-competitive manner.

Abstract

Global health issues have become increasingly urgent following the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in approximately 6.6 million deaths by 2022. This impact has prompted communities to revert to traditional medicines, aligning with the National Development Planning System (RPJPN) 2005-2025, which promotes a health paradigm through traditional remedies. Community service activities were carried out in partnership with the Ngudi Makmur Farmer Group (POKTAN) in Dlingo Village, Bantul Regency. The primary objective of this activity was to enhance residents’ knowledge in Dlingo Village regarding the benefits and processing of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA). The methods employed included material development, counseling sessions, question-and-answer discussions, and direct practical training in the preparation of aromatherapy candles. Evaluation was undertaken using pretests and posttests, which demonstrated a significant increase in participants’ understanding. The average scores rose from 81.67 (pretest) to 132.5 (posttest), with a statistically significant difference (p <0.001). These findings indicate that the counseling was effective in improving knowledge about TOGA and its utilization in producing aromatherapy candles. Such activities not only enhance awareness but also reinforce community autonomy in managing traditional medicinal resources, in line with the health-related objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

The genus Magnolia, encompassing hundreds of globally distributed species, has a long-standing history in traditional medicine for treating diverse ailments. These species are particularly renowned for their rich array of bioactive compounds, notably alkaloids. This study provides a comprehensive summary of novel alkaloid compounds identified in various Magnolia species within recent years. Through a targeted literature review utilizing Google Scholar and PubMed (2002–2024), we pinpointed nine novel alkaloids and one nitrogen-based compound isolated from four distinct Magnolia species. These newly discovered compounds exhibited promising bioactivities, including significant antiplatelet and anti-acetylcholinesterase effects. Structurally, the majority of these compounds belong to the aporphine and benzylisoquinoline classes, although some display unique configurations, such as glycosidic or N-oxide alkaloids. This review aims to bridge a critical gap in the existing scientific literature regarding the comprehensive documentation of novel alkaloid secondary metabolites found across the diverse Magnolia genus.
