Abstract

Nervous Conditions focuses on the story of the Shona family living in a patriarchal culture in Rhodesia during the postcolonial era in the 1960s. Rhodesia was a former British colony, so the legacy of colonialism and its influence is not that easy to go away. Hence, those who were colonized, or the locals experience many problems to cope with, especially women. Therefore, the study aims to examine the postcolonial issues in the novel dealing with double colonization. The objectives of the study were to describe and explain how the novel builds the themes related to postcolonialism and how the women living in patriarchy experienced oppression from male relatives as well as a colonial power. The study was done qualitatively using a content analysis method. The data were analyzed using Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism. The findings showed the story highlighted the themes of patriarchy and cultural contestation which affect the lives of the female characters. Then, the findings explained how the female characters were oppressed traditionally and colonially. Therefore, it showed how women were doubly colonized by males and Western domination. Thus, they had not been able to get full authority since they were trapped between both.

Abstract

Digital marketing optimization is a society service program done by lecturers and student of the English Department at Universitas Negeri Semarang. The society service is aimed at empowering a local community called Dheling Arts Community in Rogomulyo Village, Semarang Regency to develop their Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) focusing on bamboo working. The community's life (93%) highly depends on traditional farming and bambooworking. In selling and marketing bambooworking products, the community relies on consignment selling and marketing which relatively give small profit. consignment selling and marketing methods are challenged its effectiveness amidst digital development not to mention digital marketing and business. Thus, the empowerment program is performed to give the underlying concept of digital marketing and business so that the SME can reach wider potential buyers using digital marketing tools and platforms. This program was conducted using Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) emphasizing the active targeted society involvement. The program resulted in a better understanding of the digital marketing concept. In addition, the local community successfully created a digital marketing media and an e-commerce account to market and sell their products of bamboo working.

Abstract

Thematic progression is the way in which the theme of the clause repeats a meaning from the previous theme or rheme. It also refers to how the information flows in the text. This study aimed to analyze the application of thematic progression to enhance coherence in the analytical exposition texts written by the eleventh graders of SMA Kesatrian 2 Semarang in the academic year 2021/2022. This study used a mixed methods design which was embedded with a case study with the data from the result of students’ texts, observation sheet, and interviews. This study analysed 10 students’ analytical exposition texts. The findings showed that the most type of thematic progression applied was a linear theme reaching 22 times in occurrence, followed by 21 constant theme patterns, and 9 multiple theme patterns. These results showed that a linear theme occurred in the students’ analytical exposition text mostly because it elaborated the writers’ ideas or arguments. Further, thematic progression made the text organize well. This made the texts coherent, and the students’ scores improved from pre-test with mean of 74.50 to post-test with mean of 89.00. Then, the value of significance (2-tailed) was 0.000 which meant that the improvement was statistically significant. These results are expected to give a contribution to other researchers in conducting research in various text types. Furthermore, the results are useful for students to improve their writing and for teachers to improve the way they teach writing.

Abstract

The pursuit of dreams by women often results in a complex state of ambivalence, as they contend with societal, familial, and personal obstacles. This underscores the need for a new cultural narrative that reconciles the strengths and weaknesses of women. Our research focuses on examining the portrayal of woman's power in the novel and film Enola Holmes. Utilizing a qualitative approach and Betty Friedan's liberal feminism as a framework, we explore the multifaceted nature of female empowerment as represented by the character Enola Holmes. Our findings reveal that Enola's aspiration to become a detective symbolizes female empowerment but is marked by ambivalence. A form of ambivalence can be seen when Enola ends up in boarding school, falls in love with a man, gets help from male friend, gets a culture shock, and uses the name “Holmes”; Eudoria’s absence after her enthusiastic efforts of teaching Enola and making a plan for reform bill with her feminist movement; Dowager's plan to kill Tewkesbury is defeated by Enola Holmes and Tewkesbury; women oppressing women through the character Enola Holmes fights Edith and Enola Holmes argues Miss Harrison. Therefore, these complexities suggest a paradox: efforts to challenge patriarchal norms can inadvertently reinforce the culture they seek to change. In conclusion, our study highlights the nuanced nature of female empowerment in "Enola Holmes," offering insights into the intricate interplay between women's agency and societal norms in the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

Abstract

Inadequate and monotonous vocabulary-teaching media fails to engage EFL students' interests and limits their vocabulary achievement. Thus, proper preparation before teaching will assist lecturers in identifying various teaching media that align with students' needs and interests, ensuring that the instructional activities are effective, enjoyable, and reach the learning objectives. The study aims to investigate preferences and explore preferred vocabulary learning media and mobile learning applications before teaching a vocabulary course. Guided by the explanatory sequential design of a mixed-method design, 41 respondents from a private university  in Jakarta enrolled in a Vocabulary course in the third semester of the English Education Program. They completed the questionnaires and participated in an open-ended interview as part of a two-phase data collection. The study found that EFL students preferred vocabulary learning media such as English films with subtitles, songs, games, online/offline dictionaries, books, academic journals, technology-supported images, YouTube, and Quizziz. Furthermore, the reasons for using the preferred media for vocabulary learning include vocabulary acquisition, improving listening skills, pronunciation practice, word/lexical understanding (including slang words), language practice and cross-cultural exchange through online interactions, moral values, quick translation, vocabulary enhancement, academic purposes, and visual engagement. They favored YouTube and Quizziz as mobile learning applications because of their accessibility, simplicity, efficiency, and enjoyment. The study suggests that lecturers should switch from monotonous teaching approaches to multimodal ones while teaching vocabulary at the university level.
