Abstract

This study is a discourse study which was conducted to find out the appraisal analysis through Attitudes from James Murray and W.C. Minor, the main character in The Professor and the Madman movie. The study examined the features of the three types of attitudes: affect, judgement and appreciation using Murray and Minor Minor’s utterances as the main data. The analysis focused on clauses, which were segmented from the characters’ utterances. These clauses were examined and interpreted using Halliday’s (1994) framework of interpersonal meaning within the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach. SFG views language as a resource of meaning making, and interpersonal meaning is one of the meanings of language which shows the role relationship between interlocutors. The analysis revealed that Murray employed more attitude resources of judgement, whereas Minor used more attitude resources of affect. The findings also revealed that each of the two characters presented the attitude types and polarity that shows their characteristics and the background issues underlining it. Finally, the findings indicate that the overall atmosphere of the per scenes in the movie was highly affected by the attitudinal exchanges between the characters and their respective background issues.

Abstract

This study assesses the quality of a Maritime English coursebook used in a leading vocational maritime education program in Indonesia. The evaluation is based on expert opinions and criteria drawn from English for Specific Purposes (ESP) principles. A qualitative descriptive method was used, supported by document analysis. Data were collected from four expert raters using a 48-item Likert scale evaluation sheet. The analysis was done manually, focusing on item trends and using thematic categorization based on ESP indicators. The coursebook is considered relevant to maritime contexts, with strengths in vocabulary use and realistic tasks. However, it shows inconsistency in instructional design and does not fully align with learner-centered approaches expected in ESP materials. The findings are useful for maritime education, ESP material development, vocational curriculum design, and coursebook evaluation in applied linguistics, maritime training centers, and language education programs. This study also presents an expert-based evaluation framework for ESP coursebooks in maritime settings, addressing the lack of research using qualitative analysis based on expert judgment rather than student feedback.

Abstract

This study investigates the balance between naturalness and accuracy in the Indonesian fan-sub of Kung Fu Panda 4. It examines the subtitling strategies employed by fan translators, utilizing Gottlieb’s (1992) subtitling strategies and Larson’s (1984) principles of translation quality. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed 139 lines from the movie, focusing on their cultural and linguistic complexity. The findings reveal that paraphrasing was the most frequently applied strategy (63.31%), followed by transfer (15.11%), expansion (9.35%), condensation (7.91%), and imitation (4.32%). These strategies enabled fan translators to adapt the source text while preserving its meaning, ensuring the subtitles were culturally and linguistically suitable for the Indonesian audience. Most subtitles were rated as moderately natural (79.86%) and moderately accurate (50.36%), with a smaller portion achieving high ratings. The study underscores the need to enhance naturalness and accuracy while emphasizing the importance of incorporating subtitling strategies in translation education to address real-world challenges.

Abstract

Abstract. Textual metafunction helps the authors develop text coherently and cohesively and significantly aids readers in understanding the idea, especially in EFL textbooks. EFL textbook has become the essential learning material in EFL classrooms which it should be delivered with clarity to fostered students to grasp the material. Due to the crucial role of EFL textbooks in EFL classrooms, this study aims to unveil how theme-rheme and thematic progression occurred in reading passages of Indonesian and Samoan EFL textbooks. To attain the aims of the study, twelve reading passages from the Indonesian EFL textbook and eight reading passages from the Samoan EFL textbook for year ten were examined. Data that has been examined by theme-rheme proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) revealed that topical theme is a common type of theme found in Indonesian and Samoan EFL textbooks. Concurrently, these textbooks have the same type order in the occurrence of theme-rheme’s type, from the most common to the least type of theme that appeared. However, the Samoan EFL textbook contains a smaller variety of components in theme types due to the limited text genres in it. After examined thematic progression of these textbooks, and it revealed that the zigzag theme pattern was the majority theme pattern. Alongside the zigzag theme pattern becoming the majority pattern, these textbooks had different order for the second and third place of theme pattern due to the various contents of these EFL textbooks. This study provides textual metafunction, especially theme-rheme and thematic progression, which could be analyzed in EFL textbooks and, eventually, in literary texts.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the utilization of attitudes in editorial articles about the 2024 Indonesian presidential election in The Jakarta Post and Independent Observer. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study adopts the APPRAISAL theory by Martin & White, (2005) and Martin & Rose (2007) to analyze and interpret the evaluative language employed in the articles. The data were taken from editorial articles related to the 2024 Indonesian presidential election published in The Jakarta Post and Independent Observer from the end of 2023 to early 2024. This study employs textual and discourse analyses to examine the interpersonal language used and its broader social implications. The findings revealed that Appreciation is the most frequent category with 251 items (66%), followed by Judgment with 96 items (25%), and Affect with 33 items (9%). These findings indicate that the appreciation portrays the media's role in subtly guiding the audience's evaluation of political events, allowing for a space where audiences can form their own interpretations while still being subtly influenced by the media's tone. The judgment values used in the media imply that the media contributes to crafting a more competent and trustworthy image of politicians, which can influence the way voters view and assess them. Finally, the negative effect, especially insecurity, illustrates how the media may amplify doubts or fears related to the feasibility of government programs, which could influence public opinion and perception of political candidates. Furthermore, this study serves as a valuable reference for future researchers interested in media discourse analysis, particularly in the context of political journalism.

Abstract

This study was intended to find out whether the Project-Based Learning implementation is effective in improving students’ speaking skills. The researcher employed a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, including pre- and post-tests, to assess students’ productive skills, particularly in speaking. Besides, the researcher interviewed the teacher and the students to ask their perceptions of the implementation of project-based learning. There were 20 students as the respondents. Tenth-grade students of SMK TKJ Nurul Islami became the experimental class. The mean score showed that the pretest was 51.18. On the other hand, the mean score of the posttest was 78. The percentage and frequency of students' scores on the pretest for the experimental class showed that six students, or 35%, received an average score, while fourteen students, or 84%, received a poor score. However, after implementing the project-based learning method in the classroom, the results improved. In the posttest, four students (24%) achieved very good scores, eight students (47%) received good scores, and eight students (47%) received average scores. There was a significant difference between the pretest and the posttest. Based on the result, there was a significant difference between the experimental class in their speaking achievement. It means that the implementation of Project-Based Learning was beneficial in improving students' speaking ability in reporting descriptive text.

Abstract

English is an essential language used in various aspects of life, and formal education remains the primary setting where students learn English. In Indonesian Junior High Schools, English is commonly taught using resources provided by the school, with textbooks or learning modules serving as key materials. Most of these schools have adopted the Emancipated Curriculum (Merdeka Curriculum) while some, particularly Islamic schools, supplement it with the Integrated Islamic School Network (JSIT) Curriculum. The JSIT Curriculum combines an integrated learning system with a full-day school model, emphasizing Islamic values and character building. Given these unique educational settings, it is important to explore teachers’ specific needs for English reading modules that align with the characteristics and goals of Islamic schools. This qualitative study involved 25 English teachers from Islamic junior high schools in Magelang Regency. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The results reveal that teachers encounter challenges in teaching reading comprehension, primarily due to a lack of suitable learning resources reflecting Islamic schools' identity and educational objectives. Therefore, there is a significant need to develop English reading modules tailored to the values, vision, and mission of Islamic education to enhance classroom instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation of culture-bound words in Okky Madasari’s novel Entrok and its English translation, The Years of the Voiceless. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method to identify the translation techniques used and to determine the dominant translation ideology applied in the translation process. The findings reveal that nine translation techniques were used in translating culture-bound words, with adaptation being the most frequently employed technique. The analysis also indicates that domestication is the predominant translation ideology, as most culture-bound words were translated in a way that makes them more accessible to the target language readers. However, some instances of foreignization were also found, particularly when preserving the original cultural meaning was necessary. This study contributes to the field of translation studies by providing insights into how culture-bound words are translated in literary works. Additionally, it has implications for translation education, as understanding these techniques and ideologies can benefit students and translators in dealing with cultural elements in translation.
