Abstract

This study aimed to obtain data on the use and utilization of peatlands that the government has provided to meet their daily needs. Peatlands, which are very difficult to manage, challenge transmigrant communities to turn them into productive land. The method used was qualitative with a descriptive approach to reveal the facts in the field. Data collection used interviews, document studies, and direct observation of the field. Based on the data, it is known that the transmigrant community used peatland for mixed gardens, with 1010 plots of land used for seasonal crops (vegetables, oranges and rice) and perennials (rubber, oil palm and coconut), 480 plots of land were for settlements, and as many as 32 plots of land were used for mosques, cemeteries and schools. This data was obtained from the National Land Agency (BPN) Kab. Barito Kuala, interviews, and direct observations with the people who cultivate the land. The results obtained explain that the use of peatlands by transmigrants was certainly an illustration that peatlands could still be used as productive and comfortable land to be used as settlements/residences and for community livelihoods. With proper management, the use of peatland would provide great benefits, not only for the present but also for the future. Abstract

The stage of Indonesian history, especially southern Borneo (Kalimantan), in the first decade of the 20th century was marked by the growth and development of nationalism. The main actors are the youngsters. From 1929-1942, there were many movement organizations with various characteristics. The organization is generally based in one headquarters. Among them are Bakumpai’s youth organizations such as the Marabahan Youth Association (PPM), the Marabahan Branch of Sarekat Islam up to the Taman Siswa School which is headquartered in Round House, Marabahan. Historical studies of the existence of round houses are still not enough. Spatial aspects (place of events) still get a small portion in local historiography. This study aims to describe the existence of Round House as the headquarters for the Marabahan Youngsters (Bakumpai) in Marabahan, Southern Borneo, in 1929 -1946. This research used a historical method with heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography stages. The results of the research showed that Round House is a symbolic name for the determination of the Bakumpai youngsters to fight through the organization. Originally named the Joglo Cap Crown House, as a symbol of the glory of the Bakumpai Merchant. The Cap Crown house later changed its name to Round House after becoming the headquarters of the Marabahan Youth Association and the Marabahan Branch of Islamic Sarekat in 1929. This house was also the location of the Sarekat Borneo (Kalimantan) Congress in 1930. Round House also became the school area for PHIS-Taman Siswa Branch in 1931. Due to its important position, Round House became the Headquarters of Indonesian People's Rebellion Front (BPRI) before the return of NICA to southern Borneo in 1945. This building has the status of a cultural heritage building in 2011. However, unfortunately, it is still minimally functioning as a learning resource, place or learning facility for students.

Abstract

The Mandar ethnic group is the only maritime tribe in the Archipelago that geographically faces the sea directly. For the Mandar people, boats are crucial to their way of life, serving not only as a means of transportation but also as their livelihood source. The motorization of traditional sandeq boats among Mandar fishermen in Kotabaru Regency began in the 1990s. The development of motorized fishing boats in fishing villages in Kotabaru Regency is an intriguing subject of study. The research method employed in this study is historical research. In this method, the author applies systematic rules to gather data. Historical research involves four integral steps: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the development of motorized sandeq boats among Mandar fishermen in Pula Kerasian Village from 1980 to 1989, in general, did not involve motorized boats. This was because the fishermen in Kotabaru Regency had not yet been influenced by motorization during that period. However, in the 1990s, there was an increase in the use of motorized boats among fishermen in Kotabaru Regency due to the influence of motorization. From 2000 to 2010, there was a significant surge in the use of motorized boats, which was a direct impact of motorization. Fishermen in Kotabaru Regency preferred motor engines for sea travel for various reasons, such as their effectiveness compared to sailboats, which depend on wind propulsion.
