Abstract

Reducing the incidence of stunting is one of the goals of the 2025 Global Nutrition Targets. The prevalence of stunting in children in Indonesia is still high over the last decade. Lack of knowledge on nutritional intake, maternal nutritional status factors, breastfeeding practices, complementary feeding practices, and exposure to infections as well as other factors including education, food system, health care, and sanitation are important determinants of child stunting in Indonesia. This community service activity is carried out with the aim of providing counseling about stunting to mothers and measuring the nutritional status of toddlers as an effort to prevent stunting. The activity was coordinated by students who are members of the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University (FK Unsri) and Muhammadiyah University (FK UM), involving FK Unsri lecturers, in collaboration with staff at the Puskesmas Taman Bacaan Palembang. At the end of the activity, participants became more aware of the importance of measuring children's nutritional status and stunting prevention measures. There were 6 toddlers who were indicated to be malnourished and reported for management by the Puskesmas team so that they did not progress to stunting.

Abstract

Arcangelisia flava, with its secondary metabolites in flavonoids, has shown promising potential as an alternative treatment for hyperuricemia. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the ethyl acetate fraction from the ethanolic stem extract of Arcangelisia flava in inhibiting xanthine oxidase. This research, conducted at the Medical Basic Chemistry Laboratory Universitas Sriwijaya in September–December 2022, used in vitro study methods. The stem of Arcangelisia flava was extracted by maceration using ethanol. The ethanolic stem extract of Arcangelisia flava was then fractionated using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate fraction and ethanolic extract of Arcangelisia flava were measured to inhibit the xanthine oxidase using UV-vis spectrophotometry with allopurinol as a comparison. The IC50 was calculated by linear regression. The ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction have flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and quinones. The IC50 value of the ethanol extract was 30.04 ppm, the ethyl acetate fraction was 23.99 ppm, and the allopurinol was 17.16 ppm. The ethyl acetate fraction inhibited xanthine oxidase better than the ethanol extract. The study's significant finding is that the ethyl acetate fraction of the ethanolic stem extract of Arcangelisia flava strongly inhibits xanthine oxidase, offering a potential new avenue for treating hyperuricemia.

Abstract

Abstract

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that requires regular blood transfusions, often resulting in iron overload. Iron chelation therapy with deferiprone is commonly used to manage the iron overload, yet the relationship between deferiprone dosage and ferritin level reduction remains unclear. This study aimed to find out how the dose of deferiprone affects the reduction of serum ferritin levels in children with thalassemia major. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted involving 69 paediatric patients with thalassemia major receiving deferiprone therapy at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Central General Hospital, Palembang. Data on patient demographics, transfusion frequency, deferiprone dose, and serial ferritin levels (3–6 months apart) were collected. The optimal dose cut-off was determined using ROC analysis, and statistical association was tested using the Chi-Square test. Most patients (56.5%) received deferiprone doses ≤77.95 mg/kgBW. Only 36.2% achieved a ferritin reduction of ≥20%, while 50.7% experienced increased ferritin levels. No statistically significant association was found between deferiprone dose and ferritin reduction (p = 0.051), although a trend toward lower success in the high-dose group was observed (PR 0.355, 95% CI: 0.124–1.019). The average dose of deferiprone administered in this study was below the minimum dose recommended by the FDA, which may explain the lack of significant association with serum ferritin reduction. Further research with controlled dosing and exclusion of confounding variables is recommended to evaluate deferiprone effectiveness more accurately

Abstract

Cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L. var. cerasiforme) are rich in antioxidants, particularly flavonoids and lycopene, which help reduce free radicals and promote wound healing. Flavonoids exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antidiabetic properties. They enhance wound contraction, collagen deposition, granulation tissue formation, and epithelialization in wound healing. This study evaluates the efficacy of cherry tomato extract gel in accelerating excision wound healing in Wistar rats. This in vivo experimental study used a post-test control group design. Twenty-five 2–3-month-old Wistar rats with excision wounds were treated with cherry tomato extract gel or controls. The five groups included a positive control (NaCl), a negative control (CMC-Na gel), and treatment groups receiving 8%, 12%, or 16% extract gel. Wound size was measured on days 3, 5, 7, and 9, with data analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and post hoc tests. The extract-treated groups exhibited nearly complete wound closure by day 9. The wound size of the treatment groups significantly differed from the control groups (p<0.05). Cherry tomato extract gel significantly accelerates wound closure at 8%, 12%, and 16% concentrations, with the best results observed at 16% (p<0.05), surpassing even the positive control. The 16% extract gel group demonstrated the most effective wound healing. Cherry tomato extract gel significantly enhances wound healing, with the 16% concentration demonstrating the most effective acceleration of wound closure. These findings suggest that cherry tomato extract gel, particularly at 16%, holds promise as a potent wound-healing agent.

Abstract

Background Around 15.5 million (34.9%) adolescents in Indonesia experience stress. Most of the stress in adolescents comes from internal and external academic demands. One of the negative impacts of stress is the disruption of hormonal mechanisms in the female reproductive system, which can affect the menstrual cycle. Objective To analyze the relationship between stress level and menstrual cycle in adolescent girls aged 15 - 17 years who have menses  ≥ 2 years. Methods This study used primary data from instruments such as the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS 42) questionnaire modified by Damanik and the menstrual cycle questionnaire by Aldiba filled on Google forms by 1,565 adolescents from four high schools in Palembang City. We also excluded adolescents with conditions that could potentially bias the study, such as endocrine diseases (pituitary tumors and Cushing's syndrome), athletes with intensive physical activity, use of hormonal drugs, and abnormalities in nutritional status. Results A total of 281 of 961 respondents who met the inclusion criteria were randomly selected through a stratified proportional random sampling method. Of those who reported experiencing stress, 27% experienced moderate stress. The majority of subjects experienced menstrual cycle disorders (55.5%). Adolescents with moderate stress level and above had a greater percentage of menstrual cycle disorders compared to adolescents who did not experience stress (P=0.039). Severe levels of stress were significantly associated with menstrual cycle irregularities (P=0.025) Conclusion Stress levels are significantly associated with menstrual cycle irregularities among high school adolescents in Palembang City.
