Abstract

Abstract

In West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, approximately 13.01% of individuals aged 15 years or older are affected by mental and emotional disorders, ranking it as the third highest among the 34 provinces. Excessive smartphone use has emerged as a potential influencer of mental health, associated with social networking addiction, shyness, and low self-esteem. This study aimed to examine the relationship between smartphone addiction and mental health issues in adolescents using a cross-sectional design. The sample included 283 randomly selected students aged 15-17 years. Smartphone addiction was measured using the smartphone addiction scale-short version (SAS-SV), and mental health was assessed using the strength and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). The study revealed a significant association (p<0.001) between smartphone addiction and mental health problems among adolescents, with 72.1% of respondents experiencing smartphone addiction and 26.9% classified as having abnormal mental health. These findings emphasize the need for increased awareness regarding the negative impact of excessive smartphone use on adolescent mental health. Schools should play a vital role in addressing this issue through the provision of guidance and counseling services. Future research should investigate causal relationships using longitudinal designs and consider diverse populations to enhance the generalizability of the results.

Abstract

Abstract

Stroke patients often experience difficulty performing daily activities, including maintaining oral hygiene, due to muscle weakness and reduced strength. In hospitals, oral hygiene efforts tend to focus on patients with medical devices like feeding tubes, while conscious patients are often overlooked. This issue is worsened by the inconsistency of nurses in providing oral hygiene care and the lack of knowledge among family members on how to perform it in bed. Therefore, education for patients and families is essential. Flipcharts and leaflets can be effective tools, tailored to the patient's condition. This paper aims to provide nursing care through oral hygiene education for Mrs. L, a stroke patient. A case report method was used, involving pre- and post-tests with a questionnaire to assess knowledge and skills, along with oral hygiene status (OHI-S). Education was delivered over 20 minutes using a flipchart, followed by a demonstration from the nurse and a re-demonstration by the family. Results showed improvements: knowledge increased from 73% to 93%, skills from 60% to 93%, and OHI-S improved from 3.16 (poor) to 2.1 (sufficient). It is expected that nurses continue bedside education, and that patients and families can apply oral hygiene practices well.

Abstract

Outpatient waiting time is one of the national quality indicators. Most patients visiting outpatient clinics in Indonesian hospitals complain about the long waiting time before receiving healthcare services. Over the decades, the persistent issue of long waiting times and unresolved patient dissatisfaction has led hospitals worldwide to adopt Lean Healthcare management systems. These systems focus on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of service operations by eliminating waste. Siti Rahmah Hospital is a private type-C hospital facing outpatient waiting time issues exceeding 60 minutes. This community service aims to enhance nurses' knowledge and reduce service waiting times. This community service was conducted using a quantitative approach with an experimental design, and the primary data collection technique was through questionnaires. The implementation consisted of four main stages: preparation, socialization of lean healthcare methods, identification of waiting times, and mapping types of time waste in services. Nurses' knowledge about lean healthcare management increased significantly by 56.70% after the training, as shown by a pretest score of 36.6% and a post-test score of 93.3%. The knowledge components that improved substantially included understanding the outpatient waiting time standard of less than 60 minutes, identifying time-wasting activities in services, and using electronic medical records as a lean healthcare strategy to reduce service waiting times. The lean healthcare method is effective in reducing patient waiting times in outpatient care.
