2023-05-17: Open-Source Solution for EEG Signal Data Processing and Analysis

Image
In a prior blog post , I discussed how  Neuropype  commercial software can be used for EEG data processing and analysis. While this tool provides a lot of capability and an academic license can be obtained for free, the free license is not available to all and may not be suitable for some applications. EEGLAB is a popular, well-maintained free tool that has been used to create a number of EEG preprocessing pipelines and perform analysis. However, it requires Mathworks MATLAB commercial software to run so it indirectly comes with a cost and licensing requirements.  MNE-Python As an alternative for those looking for fully open-source and/or programmatic ways to perform EEG data preprocessing and analysis, the MNE-Python package enables exploring, visualizing, and analyzing human neurophysiological data without licensing fees. However, it does require some programming skills to use.  If you already have Python installed on your computer, installing the MNE-Python lib...

2022-05-20: EEG Data Standardization

Image
Image Source Introduction Clinicians and researchers continue to look at more and more at ways to utilize Electroencephalography (EEG)   data to support the diagnosis and treatment of various physical and mental health conditions.  However, not long after being  involved in EEG related research , you will soon realize that there are numerous formats available for EEG data recordings.  The lack of EEG data format consistency continues to present challenges in the transmission, exchange, and analysis of such data amongst researchers and impedes  advancements in brain-computer interface (BCI) and  biomedical research . At a minimum, EEG data consistency would reduce confusion amongst researchers and clinicians who rely on data sharing.  However, the benefits of EEG data standardization also include  the reduction or elimination of  expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive  data conversions to other formats.  This is very signifi...

2020-11-15: Sapien Labs Virtual Symposium on Mental Health Trip Report

Image
The Sapien Labs Virtual Symposium on The Future of Mental Health: Measurement, Treatment and Therapies was held virtually via Adobe Connect on 2-3 November 2020.   The symposium consisted of 2 sessions on each day.  Each session would begin with multiple presentations.  The presenters in each session would also join in a moderated panel discussion in the second half of that session.  Founder and CEO of Sapien Labs , Dr. Tara Thiagarajan , hosted the virtual symposium, introduced many of the speakers, and led multiple panel discussions. Symposium Day 1 Session 1 : Dr. Eiko Fried  from Leiden University   started the first session's presentations with his talk on "Measure Matters: Challenges to Assessing Mental Health Problems Pose a Substantial Barrier to Clinical Progress."  Dr. Fried stated that while proper measurement is critical, it is difficult especially when attempting to measure individuals' internal states to include personality, cognit...

2019-08-07: Invited Talk at ODU CS Summer Research Workshop: Introducing EEG in Data Science

The Department of Computer Science at ODU has been conducting summer workshops over the past few years for selected undergraduate student groups from India. During this period, they are provided with on-premise accommodation and are arranged to work closely with research groups. Researchers from various groups at ODU present their work and ongoing research to them. Some students who participated in this program in the past have already joined graduate programs at ODU. Ajay Gupta, the Director of Computer Resources at the Department of Computer Science, ODU plays a significant role in conducting this event. Overall, the program has been a great encouragement for students to engage in research. Just shared my summer workshop presentation "Introduction to Data Science with EEG" on SlideShare. @WebSciDL https://t.co/MHuyU4k8dO — Yasith Jayawardana (@yasithmilinda) August 7, 2019 This year, the summer workshop group comprised of 25 undergraduates from three universities: ...
