It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia S17E06 "Overage Drinking"

Go To

Dennis and Dee once again decide to pursue a now grown up Tammy and Trey after they show up at Paddy's to claim their teenage son. Meanwhile, Charlie and Mac look for a missing Frank.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • As You Know: Charlie explains Tammy and Trey's past with the Gang to Mac, who was there during those events. He also takes the time to exposit information Mac (and the viewer) didn't know about Tammy and Trey (namely, their lives after they were on the show), that somehow Charlie himself does.
  • Bungled Suicide: After Dennis sleeps with Kerry and Dee attempts to do the same with Trey Jr, the gang watch a news report showing that the two teens survived a suicide attempt in which they drove themselves off the Strawberry Mansion Bridge.
  • The Bus Came Back: Tammy and Trey return after a 20-year absence, having last been seen in the third episode of Season 1.
  • Casting Gag: The very young bar patrons who insult Mac after he confronts them over their age are played by Axel and Leo McElhenney (sons of Rob and Kaitlin Olson) and Miles Howerton (son of Glenn).
  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: Mac asks Charlie how he can be obsessed with cleaning the bar, yet be content to live in an apartment alongside literal piss and shit.
  • Competition Freak: Dee decides to sleep with a teenage boy so she doesn't lose to Dennis. Dennis notes later on that there was no competition.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Frank references Shadynasty, and Roxy's, and Barbara's death on his video.
    • The combination to enter the storage unit for the foundation is 6969. Charlie also claims this is the only combination Frank ever uses.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Double Subverted. Dee finds it disgusting that Dennis slept with a nineteen year old but decides she must sleep with the girl's boyfriend to "keep up" with Dennis. Upon meeting the teenager, however, she realizes she can't go through with it and can't believe Dennis could do it.
  • Future Loser: In Dee's opinion. Trey, as an adult, has become a House Husband who does the laundry, the grocery shopping, walks the dogs and is into Fantasy Football while Tammy makes all the family's money. While this is mostly just due to Dee and Dennis' fucked up views as they clearly expect Tammy to be doing this, Trey is apparently unhappy enough in his marriage to actually be interested in cheating, indicating he himself views his life rather negatively as well.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Dennis claims that the reason he thinks Tammy and Trey are opposed to Kerry dating their son is because of the "age gap" (Kerry is 19 while Trey is 18), claiming that Kerry is "robbing the cradle". This is as he's explaining how he gaslit and manipulated the teenaged Kerry into sleeping with him, a man in his late 40s, nevermind the fact he's known to have dated freshmen when he was a senior.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Dennis refuses to accept that Tammy rejected him and insists to Dee that he rejected Tammy, despite her utter lack of interest in having sex with him.
  • Kick the Dog: While Dee decides not to go through with sleeping with him, after Trey Jr. makes more than a few ageist remarks towards her, she coldly decides to tell him that Dennis slept with Kerry as revenge, which later led to their attempted suicide.
  • Lampshade Hanging: When the Gang realizes the bar is full of underage kids, Charlie and Dee both point out that they've already been through this scenario.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Parodied. Dennis and Dee refer to their attempts to seduce Tammy and Trey as an adult drama, and afterward their attempts to seduce their son and his girlfriend as a teen drama. Meanwhile, Mac and Charlie, in their attempts to find Frank, refer to the story as a thriller (though what kind depends on the scene) and any new information as turns or plot twists.
  • Multi-Part Episode: The episode ends with Frank having been selected for The Golden Bachelor, which will be followed up on in subsequent episodes.
  • Older and Wiser: Tammy, compared to when she was last seen. She's now a suburban mom and makes decent enough money to be her family's primary breadwinner, but moreso, she's matured enough to be completely uninterested in Dennis, and clearly views her teenaged entanglement with him with disdain and as an Old Shame.
  • Parental Hypocrisy: Tammy and Trey reprimand their son for going to Paddy's and drinking underage, despite them doing the same exact thing twenty years prior.
  • Prelude to Suicide: The Gang views Frank taking a bunch of "dick pills" as a sign he's about to kill himself.
  • Sequel Episode: To Season 1's "Underage Drinking: A National Concern"
  • Take That!: Dennis wears a fragrance promoted by Joe Rogan that is supposed to drive men away and women wild. Both Dee and Tammy immediately say it smells like shit, Tammy asks to check his shoes to make sure he hasn't stepped in some and she keeps getting distracted by the smell the entire time Dennis is trying to seduce her.
  • Teen Pregnancy: According to Charlie, Trey and Tammy had sex on prom night, resulting in Tammy getting pregnant with Trey Jr.
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: When the Gang realizes all the bar patrons are underage, Mac, remembering everything that happened the last time it happened, decides they should just immediately kick them all out of the bar to avoid repeating it.
