In Memoriam (trope)

"Since tonight is a celebration of the work and accomplishments of our community in this past year, it is only fitting then that we celebrate those we've lost, who've dedicated their lives to their crafts, both in front of and behind the camera. Through their immeasurable contributions, each of them left an individual and indelible mark that shared and informed us. They've touched our hearts, they've made us smile, and became dear friends, who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to."
John Travolta, 2023 Academy Awardsnote

Memorials to the dead are common in most human cultures. When the dead are connected with a TV show or movie, you'll sometimes see this: a final tribute to that person as part of the show.

For a true In Memoriam, there is a direct connection between dedicatee and the show, book or film being dedicated to their memory. There are a great number of books dedicated to the last astronauts of the space shuttle named Challenger or the emergency personnel who died when the twin towers of the World Trade Center in the city of New York in the state of New York collapsed. Unless the book is about them, those would fall under the larger Dedication trope.

It is a Celebrity Elegy when done through song or poetry for a famous person. For more musical examples, see Grief Song. Fanbases may turn to Death Fic. A Memorial Character is a character based on or named after a deceased person, as a way of immortalizing them.

This is related to Meaningful Funeral, which memorializes a character from the show. They can overlap when a show is based on Real Life. Needless to say, such memorials can become awkward, or even tone-deaf in hindsight if the deceased is posthumously accused of misconduct.

Televised award shows often include an Obituary Montage to honor those in their field who died in the past year. Also see Special Thanks (where the credits acknowledge loved ones and friends of the production crew who weren't directly involved with the production and in most cases are still alive at the time of release) and Posthumous Credit (where the deceased actually contributed to the work prior to their death and have their part acknowledged in the credits, which in many circumstances will overlap with this trope). Might be combined with a Really Dead Montage if The Character Died with Him.

    Networks
  • [adult swim] often airs silent bumpers, in their usual "black and white" format, honoring figures who have made a significant impact on the lives of the staff or on pop culture in general, showing their names and the years they were alive. On rare occasions, more electorate dedications are shown.
    • A 2011 bumper paid tribute to Steve Jobs by showing the cursive "Hello" from the 1984 unveiling of the Mac fading into a "Goodbye".

    • A 2014 bumper paid tribute to Sherman Hemsley two years after he died.
"Sorry, we just found out. That shit sucks."
    • In 2016, they did everything they could to honor one of the network's original driving forces, C. Martin Croker. This included the Toonami bit mentioned below, a re-airing of the first Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode, and a marathon stream of the show on the block's website.

They also hold marathons of movies those people were involved with in honor of them.
    • Every December, they run a touching "TCM Remembers" montage between shows to acknowledge film-related personalities who passed away that year; it tends to run 5+ minutes due to its thorough approach — cult favorite figures and behind-the-camera talent such as special effects technicians and costume designers are afforded the same time and affection as A-list stars and directors. Very often, someone dies after the clipreel is released, and unlike the Academy Awards they recut the whole thing to include those people if possible. If not, they just go to the next year (this happened with Eartha Kitt, for instance).note

It featured interviews with current personalities sharing opinions and stories about icons we lost in 2017 (Tracy Morgan talking about Don Rickles, Darius Rucker on Tom Petty, etc.) and a clip montage of ones they missed at the end. They repeated this in 2018 (two honorees being President Bush Sr. and his wife Barbara), but apparently dropped the concept in 2019.

  • WWE does this regularly.
    • Depending on how "important" the dead guy is, it might just be an "In Memoriam" card at the beginning of the show or a fully produced Retrospective about their lives. And that's just for old guys. For Owen Hart, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit they had full two-hour Kayfabe breaking tributes. Benoit's was an unfortunate example, as it aired moments before it emerged that his death was a murder-suicide involving his wife and son, and when the truth came out, Vince McMahon broke kayfabe in a major way when he appeared out of character on ECW and gave a short statement apologizing for the earlier tribute. Incidentally, this was the last time Benoit's name would ever be mentioned on WWE television.

    • Another contentious example was their 2017 tribute to Jimmy Snuka; Snuka had narrowly avoided prosecution for the death of his girlfriend Nancy Argentino in 1983, having been declared unfit to stand trial due to health issues, and the charges were dismissed. Even though evidence had pointed to Snuka not just having killed Nancy but abusing her before hand, and the company considered him an Un-person like Benoit during his arrest, suspending his legends contract and removing him from the Hall of Fame, the WWE decided to honor Snuka as a hero with a glowing tribute video package, a move that was considered tone deaf and hypocritical by many considering how quickly the promotion had worked to wash its hands of Benoit nearly a decade earlier.
    • Triple H wore a black armband during a match in remembrance of "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig.
    • Paul Heyman would pay tribute to ECW Original New Jack on an episode of Talking Smack, saying that WWE wouldn't show footage of him and his matches because he "was a gangsta".

At the end of the show, they retired the then-current TNT Championship belt (which Brodie had held until his last match), giving it to Brodie Jr. and declaring him TNT Champion for life.
  • WWE would also pay tribute to Mr. Brodie Lee, known in WWE as (Luke) Harper, in various ways:
    • On the December 29th, 2020 episode of Raw, Drew McIntyre opened the show with "It's Monday. You know what that means?" before replying to himself with "Yeah yeah! It's time for Monday Night Raw!" Both "Yeah yeah!" and "It's (name of day). You know what that means?" were Harper's catchphrases, "Yeah yeah!" while in the ring, and "It's (name of day). You know what that means?" while on Twitter.

    • Nebraska Cornhuskers punter Sam Foltz was killed in a car accident prior to their September 3, 2016, game against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Nebraska's first punt attempt of the game, therefore, had no punter. The play clock expired creating a delay of game penalty, which Fresno State declined.
    • Sean Taylor, the free safety for the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders), was shot and killed in a home invasion on November 27, 2007. In their next game on December 2 against the Buffalo Bills, Washington's first defensive play only had ten men on the field, with the free safety position empty.
