Haloid (Web Animation)

Haloid is a 2007 short CGI crossover Fan Film by Monty Oum. As the title suggests, it crosses over Halo with Metroid, and consists of nothing but our favorite Power Armor-clad protagonists kicking ass (including each others') in an ultimate showdown with no regard for minor things like the laws of physics.

Something of a rough diamond compared to Oum's later works Dead Fantasy and RWBY, Haloid was nevertheless an impressive feat, being put together in a little over two months by one man with no formal training or budget on his home computer. Showcasing spectacular fight scene choreography, polished visuals, a fair bit of Fanservice, explosions and a Twist Ending, it's a loving send-up to both games as well as shooters/fighting games/action movies in general.

Oum began work on the film after discovering reverse engineering techniques online that allowed for the extraction of models from Halo 2. Upon release, it gained a significant amount of views online and made for his first big break, securing his status as an Internet celebrity legend and making him a highly sought-after name among game companies.

This work contains examples of:

  • Bring It: Samus' The Matrix style "come get some" gesture to MC.
  • Credits Gag: Type 5 (Monty Oum is listed as doing everything)
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • It takes about thirty seconds for the ODSTs to all get killed.
    • The Covenant get thoroughly squashed shortly after.
    • After Samus loses her power armor, she starts kicking Master Chief around like a ragdoll. Chief would've easily been killed were it not for the Covenant's timely return. Word of God is that this is because MC had fallen in love.
  • Dance Party Ending: One involving all participants of the main work save the poor ODST troopers at the end. Done purely for Fanservice and lulz.
  • Dancing Mook Credits: The Covenant aliens are the bulk of the dancers in the credits.
  • Dual Wielding: Samus does it with energy swords. And shields if you count them as weapons.
  • Equippable Ally: MC picks up Samus for a rocket-boot powered Spin Attack.
  • Gun Fu: MC takes down numerous Elites and Grunts with a plasma rifle this way.
  • Homage Shot: To The Matrix films.
    • A certain scene, with handguns swapped for rocket launchers.
    • Another scene, with a metal pole replaced by a laser whip.
    • Another scene, where Samus twirls around, with a metal pole replaced by MC.
    • The beginning of Zero Suit Samus's Intimidation Demonstration is a shot for shot remake of her introductory scene from the reveal trailer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: A grunt demonstrates this with a shotgun right after the opening credits. On himself.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills:
    • MC. At one point Chief kills about 30 Covenant with a single sniper shot.
    • Samus, to a lesser degree, though she prefers to just spam various ranged attacks to cover her approach.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: The Spartan's codpeice shorts out after witnessing Samus in action.
  • Intimidation Demonstration: After the first time Samus activates her Laser Blade, she performs some basic cuts and swings with it.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Samus lands and mistakes MC for an enemy. Asskicking ensues.
  • Outrun the Fireball: Samus uses her rocket boots to fly herself and MC away from MC's last-ditch attack, which is to set off the Spartan armor's self-destruct bomb.
  • Running Gag: Crotch: *ffzzzt* Which actually doubles as Foreshadowing.
  • Samus Is a Girl: The effect of the trope name was replicated for Master Chief. MC was surprised (and aroused, as the sparkle crotch indicates) to find this out. Turns out MC is a girl too. It's short for Master Chick and she's meant to be Nicole-458 - the secret Spartan character from Dead or Alive 4. Her identity is made explicit due to the number on her unarmored model's bodysuit.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: MC's Spartan armor has a detachable breastplate that can be set to detonate like a nuclear bomb.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sigil Spam: The Marathon logo appears on the back of MC's under-armor bodysuit and the chest area of MC's dance outfit.
  • Something Else Also Rises: Distaff example. Since the Chief was actually female, instead of getting a boner, she got wet.
  • Stat-O-Vision:
    • Threat level — '''Massive'''. We don't get to see any faces during the battle, but at this point, an Oh, Crap! reaction can be implied.
    • Before removing the outer armor, MC's HUD goes through a booting up, including the Bungie logo and "SO VERY TIRED", which was either our Spartan's feelings on the matter or that of the AI in said warrior's armor.
  • Stealth Pun: There were two different Floods in this video; one resulted in sparks.
  • Throwing Your Shield Always Works: MC cuts a Covenant member in half with a thrown shield.
  • You Don't Look Like You: The SPARTAN's unarmored appearance has never been revealed, but according to Dead or Alive 4 Nicole has a BWH of 49-30-41, a good deal more shapely than her unarmored model in the video. Though said measurements could also refer to her MJOLNIR armor’s measurement and not Nicole herself.
  • Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny: invoked Samus Aran vs Master Chief is sure to be a showdown for the ages. Samus Aran vs Nicole-458 turned out to be one of these.
