Abstract

Mental health issue among Indonesian students is prevalent. The Indonesian National Adolescent Mental Health Survey reports that over one-third of Indonesian adolescents are grappling with mental health concerns, leading to higher stress levels and negative effect on the academic quality. To address this issue, it is necessary to introduce the concept of resilience to students as a preventive measure against more severe issues. Student-centered learning (SCL) emerges as a viable approach to instilling resilience. Therefore, this research focused on the internalization of resilience through the SCL model in Merdeka curriculum. This qualitative field research involved deputy head of curriculum, the homeroom teacher and students of class 6B. Data were gathered through interviews and observations, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings suggest that the SCL model encourages active and enthusiastic student participation. Teachers employ various strategies, such as project-based learning, problem-based learning, technology integration, differentiated learning, and fostering a positive environment, to instill resilience in students. These initiatives empower students to cultivate resilience, equipping them with the essential skills to navigate life successfully in the future. This study concludes that SCL model in Merdeka curriculum can instill resilience in students, thus making students strong and resilient in receiving learning.

Abstract

Learning is closely related to student academic achievement as one of the indicators of success. In the era of Society 5.0, many learning models have not met effectiveness standards, thus requiring more relevant innovations. The RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) model is an alternative that encourages active student involvement and enhances learning outcomes. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the RADEC model in improving the academic achievement of elementary school students. The research employs a quantitative approach with a pretest-posttest control group experimental design involving two elementary school students. Data were collected through tests and observations and analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the Wilcoxon test to measure the effectiveness of the RADEC model in improving learning outcomes. The results indicate that the RADEC learning model effectively improves elementary students’ academic achievement through five active stages that promote critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. The average posttest score of the experimental group reached 83.06. This model also strengthens intrinsic motivation, reflectivity, and 21st-century skills. The role of the teacher as a facilitator and ongoing training are key to the successful and meaningful holistic implementation of the model. This study contributes to the development of innovative learning models relevant to the needs of 21st-century education. The RADEC model proves capable of enhancing student academic achievement, critical thinking skills, creativity, and collaboration. The findings serve as a reference for educators and policymakers in designing effective learning strategies and encourage continuous teacher training to improve the quality of education in elementary schools.

Abstract

The globalization has led to an increasing number of international schools worldwide, comprising individuals from diverse cultures. This trend presented numerous multicultural challenges, particularly for those who experience difficulties adapting to multicultural environments. International mindedness (IM) is a crucial aspect of the international baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, playing a significant role in promoting intercultural communication at international schools. This study aimed to explore the significance of IM in fostering intercultural communication, with a specific focus on five teachers in the middle year program (MYP) of two IB schools using a phenomenological approach. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, and the study employed thematic analysis to address research questions systematically. The findings revealed that participants recognize several elements of IM, including open-mindedness, acceptance of different cultures, empathy, and tolerance. Teachers were identified as vital in developing IM, necessitating them to be respected figures accepted by students and to provide effective teaching strategies. The study highlighted the importance of self-awareness and adaptability skills for teachers in fostering intercultural interactions. A cultural training program can be recommended for developing teachers’ IM, particularly to enhance teachers’ knowledge and perspectives in promoting intercultural communications.
