Abstract

This research investigates language instruction strategies and professionalism alignment within maritime education, focusing on 45 junior cadets. Through qualitative analysis, findings reveal varying language proficiency levels among cadets, with a predominant need for technical terminology mastery and communicative competence. Additionally, cadets emphasize the importance of practical learning experiences, such as shipboard training, and the integration of cross-cultural competence training. The research highlights the alignment between language instruction practices and international standards, notably the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) convention. Moreover, professionalism attributes, including safety awareness, ethical conduct, and leadership skills, are identified as integral components of maritime education. Recommendations include the integration of specialized language resources, continuous evaluation of instructional practices, and the promotion of ethical leadership. By addressing language instruction needs and professionalism requirements, maritime education institutions can enhance cadets' readiness for successful careers in the maritime industry.

Abstract

This research explores the potential of blockchain technology to streamline multimodal cargo documentation in the maritime industry. Through qualitative analysis of 100 cadets at the Maritime Institute, key indicators including efficiency, security, interoperability, and readiness for adoption were identified and weighted. Findings show that security and efficiency are paramount, with participants highlighting the need for secure and streamlined documentation processes. Interoperability and readiness for adoption emerged as challenges, indicating the importance of industry-wide standards and training programs. The study underscores the critical role of standardisation in supporting the adoption of blockchain solutions and improving international transportation processes. By addressing these challenges, stakeholders can enhance the security, efficiency, and interoperability of cargo documentation processes, ultimately benefiting the maritime industry.

Abstract

This research explores the integration of advanced technologies, such as machine learning and sensor data analysis, into maritime education to enhance safety standards. The study focuses on cadets' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of safety practices and examines incident data to predict and prevent maritime incidents. Findings reveal that while cadets have substantial knowledge of safety regulations, their attitudes towards safety culture need reinforcement. The alignment of education programs with industry requirements and adherence to international standards are emphasized. Additionally, the integration of technology into curricula is crucial for preparing future maritime professionals. The research underscores the need for a comprehensive approach combining technical knowledge, professional attitudes, and advanced technology to significantly improve safety standards and ensure the sustainability of the maritime industry.

Abstract

Abstract

Ethical decision-making is vital in maritime operations, where actions impact safety, sustainability, and professionalism. Islamic principles, grounded in integrity, responsibility, and justice, offer a culturally relevant foundation for ethical education in maritime training. However, their systematic integration into cadet curricula has not been extensively explored. This research addresses this gap by aligning Islamic principles with practical ethical training, employing case-based learning as a pedagogical tool. The study focuses on how Islamic values and case-based learning can foster ethical competence, critical thinking, and professional readiness among first-semester cadets. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, surveys, and classroom observations involving 15 experienced maritime lecturers. Thematic analysis was conducted to assess cadets’ development in ethical decision-making, evaluate the effectiveness of case-based learning, and identify integration challenges. The results reveal that integrating Islamic principles significantly enhanced cadets’ ability to analyze scenarios, identify ethical dilemmas, and propose solutions aligned with these values. However, challenges such as variability in cadets’ prior ethical knowledge and the lack of culturally relevant case studies were identified. This research provides a practical framework for ethical education in maritime training, highlighting the importance of culturally aligned curricula and experiential learning. The study contributes to preparing cadets for ethical and professional challenges in global maritime contexts.
