Abstract

The research aimed at improving the ability of the Eleventh grade students of Senior High School of Unismuh Makassar in writing descriptive text using the Brain-Sketching Technique. For the purpose, it employed Classroom Action Research in which the researcher worked in planning, implementation, observation, and reflection on the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students writing products. The method of this research is Classroom Action Research that consists of two cycles. One cycle consisted of four meetings. It means that there were eight meetings for two cycles. This classroom action research was done in Senior High School of Unismuh Makassar for English subject. As subjects in this research is class XI IPA 2 in 2012-2013 academic years which consists of 26 students. Those consisted of 14 women and 12 men. The instruments used were writing test and observation sheet. The study was conducted in diagnostic test, cycle one and cycles two, each cycle was carried out in four meetings.  The objective of the research was intended to know the improvement of the students’ writing ability after using Brain-Sketching Technique at the Eleventh grade students of Senior High School of Unismuh Makassar. The findings indicated that using Brain-Sketching Technique could improve the students ability in writing descriptive text. Before giving implementation the researcher gave the students diagnostic test and the mean score of diagnostic test was 63.90 as classification “fairly good”. Then the researcher conducted the first cycle and the second cycles, and the result showed that the students scores in the first and second cycles improved. In the first cycle, the mean score of students was 67.22 as classification “fairly good”, meanwhile the mean score of students in the second cycle was 71.41 as classification “good. It means that the improvement of students’ writing ability from D-Test to cycle I was 5.21%, cycle I to cycle II was 6.22%, D- test to cycle II was 11.73%. Keywords: Brain-Sketching, Technique, Descriptive, Text, Writing.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa di kelas XI SMA Unismuh Makassar dalam menulis teks deskriptif dengan menggunakan Teknik Brain-sketsa. Untuk itu, Penelitian melibatkan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas dimana peneliti melaksanakan dalam perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi, dan refleksi pada data yang dikumpulkan dari proses belajar mengajar dan produk menulis siswa. Metode penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang terdiri dari dua siklus. Satu siklus terdiri dari empat pertemuan. Ini berarti bahwa ada delapan pertemuan selama dua siklus. Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan di SMA Unismuh Makassar untuk pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Sebagai subyek dalam penelitian ini adalah kelas XI IPA 2 pada tahun akademik 2012-2013 yang terdiri dari 26 siswa. Mereka terdiri dari 14 perempuan dan 12 laki-laki. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes tertulis dan lembar observasi. Penelitian dilakukan pada tes diagnostik, siklus satu dan siklus dua, masing-masing siklus dilakukan dalam empat pertemuan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa setelah menggunakan Teknik Brain-sketsa pada siswa di kelas XI SMA Unismuh Makassar. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa menggunakan Teknik Brain-Sketsa dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Sebelum memberikan implementasi peneliti memberi siswa tes diagnostik dan nilai rata-rata dari tes diagnostik adalah 63, 90 sebagai klasifikasi "cukup baik". Kemudian peneliti melakukan siklus pertama dan siklus kedua, dan hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa nilai siswa dalam siklus pertama dan kedua ditingkatkan. Pada siklus pertama, nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 67,22 sebagai klasifikasi "cukup baik", sementara nilai rata-rata siswa pada siklus kedua adalah 71,41 sebagai klasifikasi "baik. Ini berarti bahwa peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa dari D-Test untuk siklus I adalah 5, 21%, siklus I ke siklus II adalah 6, 22%, uji D- ke siklus II adalah 11, 73%.Kata Kunci: Otak-sketsa, Teknik, deskriptif, Teks, Menulis.

Abstract

The objective of this research to find out the students’ perception toward implementing Blended learning method in English Language Teaching (ELT) at fifth semester students English Department Makassar Muhammadiyah University. This research applied the descriptive method for the data collection by using the close-ended questionnaire consisting 15 statements, open-ended questionnaire consisting 5 numbers, and 5 numbers for lecturer interview. The data was taken from 35 students in a class by using purposive sampling technique. The result of this research was of this study gave their positive perception toward the implementing BL method in ELT. The positive judgment from the respondents came from their experience in learning by received BL method. It can be seen from the students' questionnaire, their agreement was showed that they enjoy in learning when the lecturer implementing BL method. Besides that, the benefit of BL method for the students made them more interested in learning. It is also can be seen from students’ questionnaire that they got some benefits from the method, one of them was the students become more active and responsible for learning.

Abstract

The present study examined the effect of mapping Instructional Materials on EFL learners of different types of materials, and the participant learned a different kind of book content, design, and layout of instructional materials. Also, it describes need analysis and creates a model of instructional materials through in-depth discussion among teachers of secondary schools. Data of the study were collected from six English teachers and students of three classes at three different secondary schools in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study provided critical, meaningful data collection to support what English teacher perception about the design book. Pretest and posttest design were administered to see the effectiveness of the mapping, practicing, and using strategy. Questionnaires were administered to see the teachers and students’ perception toward the instructional materials. It was found that mapping instructional, practicing, and using strategy is effective in improving the English achievement; instructional materials with different strategies improve the English achievement of the students.

Abstract

This research deals with teacher questions in senior high school English classroom. The study was conducted to answers three of problem statement. The study was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 UNISMUH Makassar with the descriptive qualitative method. The study was carried out by observing, interview and taking video recordings of 1 English teacher and 15 students. The researcher takes 2 class in one meeting consist of 90 minutes each class. The result showed that procedural (13%), display (74%) and referential (13%) questions were found in the type of teacher questioning strategies used. However, the reason why teacher used the types of the question is according to the function of the question type. Then the effect of the question to the students based on 6 questions that researcher asked. 60% students agree with the Q1 and 40% disagree. For the Q2 100% students agree with the question that researcher ask and also the Q3 100% students agree with the question. While for Q4 60% students agree and 40% of them disagree. 40% agree and 60% disagree to Q5 and 80% agree and 20% disagree for the Q6.

Abstract

Assessment is an evaluation tool in learning adjusted to the times. The criteria must be included in the assessment are indicators in the cognitive domain and critical thinking. Therefore, this study intends to explore teaching assessments prepared by lecturers in assessing students' cognitive shutter and critical thinking abilities. The data took in the pandemic period of pandemic in Covid-19. The subjects of this study were 269 lecturers who teaching in English education departments in some Muhammadiyas’ university in South Sulawesi. There were 25 items of questionnaires arranged to analyses the teacher assessment based on 10 indicators in critical thinking. The results showed the dominant lecturer measured the ability of students on the C1-C2 scale even though some lecturers had been on the C5-C6 scale. The lecturer learning assessment has implemented indicators of critical thinking skills. The study recommended for future researcher in developing assessment of teaching especially for English department.

Abstract

This research was aimed at knowing the implementation of Collaborative Learning promotes students’ speaking skill at the second semester English Education Department Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research applied a quasi-experimental design; the non-equivalent control group design. The sample was taken by using purposive random sampling technique. The total number of samples was 38 students of two classes consisting of class II G was experimental class and II C was the control class. There was speaking test as the instrument. The statistical result analysis of SPSS 25 showed that in accuracy sig 2-tailed = 0.000 is less than 0.05 and in fluency sig 2-tailed = 0.000 is less than 0.05. This result rejects the first null hypothesis which states that there is no significant difference between the mean score of pretests and posttest of the students’ speaking skills. This research concluded that the use of Collaborative Learning in teaching speaking promote the students’ speaking skills in terms of accuracy and fluency.

Abstract

Errors in writing are naturally made in EFL teaching. This research aimed to find out the errors of correctness, clarity, engagement, delivery, and plagiarism in student essay writing using Grammarly Software in the third semester of English education. This research conducted at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The researcher used the descriptive quantitative method. The participants were 21 students from the third semester at English education of University Muhammadiyah of Makassar. The study took sample by apply purposive sampling. The instrument of this research is the students’ essay writing. The research results found 452 errors based on Grammarly software made by the third semester in English education at University Muhammadiyah of Makassar. Those errors can classify as follow: 73.5% errors of correctness, 17.5% errors of clarity, 7.7 % errors of engagement, 1.3% errors of delivery, and 0% errors of plagiarism.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the students’ perception as the spoken feedback receiver towards the implementation of peer feedback in Debate subject. The data collection was conducted from June to August 2016. The data was collected from 15 students of English Education Department year 2013 from 6 classes of Debate Subject. This study used qualitative research design in collecting data. The instrument which was used to collect the data was questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 15 students of English Education Department from year 2013. The items of the questionnaire were open ended questions as qualitative questionnaire. Based on the findings, it finds that students gave the positive perception towards the implementation of peer feedback in Debate subject class either as spoken feedback receiver. Moreover, the students claimed that they have got many advantages during the implementation of peer feedback. This study also found out that this strategy was needed to be improved by the lecturers in terms of giving instruction, observing the class and evaluating the feedback from the students. DOWNLOAD ABSTRACT

Abstract

Kota Maros sebagai penyandang destinasi wisata karst terbesar ketiga di dunia dan berada di kawasan timur Indonesia dibanjiri oleh para wisman, sehingga para Pedayung Perahu Jolloro (perahu tradisional Sul-Sel) sebagai pelayan jasa transportasi perahu yang berada di sekitar destinasi wisata Rammang-Rammang memiliki pekerjaan yang menjanjikan. Namun masalah yang di hadapi berupa kompetensi manusianya menentukan kualitas layanan destinasi wisata Rammang-Rammang Hal itu tentu menjadi tantangan khususnya pada sektor pelayanan publik pada aspek komunikasi bahasa Inggris sebagai penyambung komunikasi antara Pedayung Perahu Jolloro dengan para wisman selama berada di lokasi wisata karena notabenenya sebagian besar wisman tidak menggunakan jasa pemandu (guide) sehingga diharapkan bagi para pedayung untuk mahir berbahasa inggris. Di samping tantangan yang ada, Berdasarkan persoalan yang berada di lapangan ini, lahirlah inisiatif berupa program pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi Pedayung Perahu Jolloro. Luaran kegiatan ini adalah terbangunnya keterampilan berbahasa Inggris praktis dan motivasi untuk senantiasa belajar lewat booklet for Rammang-Rammang Boatman yang dihasilkan dengan memadukan metode interpersonal interaction dan pendekatan bermain peran.
