Abstract

Under the auspices of the Centre for Curriculum Decelopment, a three-cycle action research study was carried out in three primary schools in Yogyakarta with the aim of developing a model of teaching English to primary school students. The model consists of five parts: Opening, Content Focus, Language Focus, Communication Focus, and Closing. The model, requiring that learning tasks involve active participation of students, both physically and mentally, supported by the use of media suitable for young learners, was developmentally fully implemented. The results showed that efforts were mostly made to establish teacher-student rapport in the first cycle, in which success in classroom management was gradually reached. This led to the easier second cycle, which was characterized by increasing teacher talk (classroom English), the use of interesting media, and more active students participation in the tasks involving various games which successfully elicited students English. All of this was solidified in the third cycle. The conclusion is that with the three aspects being focused successively, teacher-student good rapport being established, various media being used, and competing and cooperative tasks being assigned in balance, joyful and effective learning is likely to occur.

Abstract

(Title: The Interdependence Between Human and Nature in Craighead Jean George's "My Side of The Mountain"). Centering from the belief that literature is an important media to remind people about the significant role of the environment and to stimulate awareness about its critical condition, this study explores ecological discourse in Jean Craighead George's My Side of the Mountain. It aims to reveal an interdependence between people and nature. Applying qualitative content analysis, this study shows that the interdependence between people and nature is different in degree. People have a strong dependence on nature, whereas nature is an independent entity and scarcely needs people to support their life. Sam in My Side of the Mountain has been nurtured by nature. It provides him food, shelter, and protection from any inconvenient weather. However, Sam is careless and ignorant. He focuses on fulfilling his needs and neglecting his surroundings. In the novel, nature is dominated and positioned as the object to fulfill humans' needs and desires. Keywords: literature, nature, human, interdependence

Abstract

(Tittle: Adults-Children Power Relations in Judy Blume's "Blubber"). This study aims to uncover the power relations between adults and children in Judy Blume's novel entitled Blubber. This study used a qualitative method by paying attention to the expressions used in the novel related to the topic of power relations of adults-children. Peer debriefing techniques were applied in this study in order to achieve the validity of the research results. The collected data of dialogues and narrations suggest that adults assert dominance toward children especially physically and psychologically as a consequence of the adults' ideologies while trying to retain the image of a mentor. On the other hand, they also give spaces for children to grow and develop themselves. The research also revealed how Blubber paints a more realistic depiction of children and explores more of their human nature beyond images of innocence and naivety.             Keywords: abuse, Blubber, children's literature, egalitarian, power relations

Abstract

This paper attempts to discover the characteristics of the human being through William Blake's Poems as an alternative definition. Among Blake's poems, The Divine Image and The Human Abstract are the most representative of discovering human characteristics. Moreover, this study strives to establish the correlation between Islamic values and European literature. The study uses new criticism in discovering the characteristics in the poems by two steps of analysis; paraphrasing and explication. After conducting the analysis, it is found that there are four positive characteristics in The Divine Image and four negative characteristics in The Human Abstract. The positive characteristics consist of mercy, pity, peace, and love, while the negative ones are exploitation, cruelty, conflict, and hypocritical humility. An Islamic expert, Murtadha Muthahhari, perceives the result of the analysis of the poem. Muthahhari explains fourteen positive and eight negative points of humans following the Holy Qur'an. It is found that the poems' human positive and negative characteristics include in MurtadhaMuthahhari's points of thought. Thus, the ideas of human being’s characteristics in the poems are related to Murtadha Muthahhari’s thoughts.

Abstract

This paper (1) explores learners’ initial perceptions of English, and (2) explains the development of the perceptions before coming to Kampung Inggris. This paper is based on ethnographic research using interpretivism as a paradigm to understand the learners’ perceptions. The research site was Kampung Inggris TulungRejo village, Pare, Kediri, East Java. The participants were the students in the village. The data were collected through interview. The data were analyzed using iterative model from Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2013). In this model, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verification were used to analyze the data. In the data analysis process, multiple coding and categorizations were used to figure out patterns. The theoretical framework was used in data interpretation. This study found out that (1) the learners’ initial perception on English varied according to their experiences. Most of the perceptions before coming to Kampung Inggris were negative. These perception were affected by the learners’ learning process, the environment and the surrounding people. In the learners’ reality, English was viewed merely on its intrinsic feature. (2) The learners’ perception was developed due to their life experiences. After experiencing some turning points, they believed that English was important for their lives. This change of perception also changed their attitude and became their motivations in learning English in Kampung Inggris.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and reveal the traits and struggles of female characters in eight novels written by Indonesian and Malaysian women writers in the early 21stcentury. This is a qualitative study employing content analysis. The study reveals that all main female characters in these eight novels are strong and tough women living in a discriminativepatriarchal society in which women are seen as the second class society and object of sexual desire. The main female characters in the both Indonesian and Malaysian novels under study are fighting for either themselves or other female characters against gender discrimination and sexual abuse. Some female characters struggle to gain knowledge and skills for a better position, and some struggle to get economic welfare. While the Indonesian characters use human rights for gender equity and moral justice, the Malaysian characters use religious and moral conduct as the foundation for their struggle.
