Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the correlation between self-esteem to student?s reading comprehension. This study employed quantitative approach in the form of correlation design to identify the correlation between self-esteem and students reading comprehension. The population of the present study was English department students of ULM academic year 2018/2019. Data collection involved 35 students who took part in the reading course. There are two kinds of the instrument used: test and questionnaire. The data in this study were analyzed by using Pearson product-moment. The result of the study reveals that there is a correlation between self-esteem and student?s reading comprehension. The result showed that the r of the first calculation was .0457. It meant that H0 was rejected and self-esteem has a correlation to the reading comprehension with significance tailed 0.006< 0.05

Abstract

Learning a foreign language for those who have their first and second language often puts learners in imperfection mastery such as irrelevant lexical choice, and source cultural bounds language utterances. Knowing the concepts merely cannot guarantee the process of avoiding mistakes or errors that learners have. There has been an amount of research on learner language which focuses on language corpus but little on highlighting the research specific language components grammatically contributing to language learners’ competence. Therefore, to fill the void, this study aimed at scrutinizing and yielding information on the practical way of phenomena in Indonesians’ interference by knowing the students’ feature descriptions of language competence. In this research, a guided interview was used to sub-ethnic of Banjarese which covered several Banjar Kuala and Banjar Hulu pre-service English teachers in getting the data of this study.  The findings reveal language problems in lexical aspect, semantic confusion, incorrect use of word-formation pattern, prepositional misuse, and problems in language syntax and discourse.  The implication of this study calls for recommendations to adopt techniques in mitigating suggested learner language in the area of subject-verb concord, tenses, and lexical problems in a process of language development

Abstract

Technology utilization learning is gaining popularity especially when online learning is conducted during and after the worldwide pandemic. Many studies have examined blended learning as an effort to integrate online learning and face-to-face learning which has an impact on increasing student engagement, improving learning outcomes, and providing a more flexible and personalized educational experience. However, the results of previous research also reported that the application of online learning has minimal interaction, thus leading to less meaningful learning. To respond to these problems, this study aims to investigate perceptions about the application of social presence in English teaching in the implementation of blended learning. The results of this study show that quantitatively English teachers have applied 3 important aspects of social presence, of which 59.82% agreed with teaching activities based on affective categories. Followed by the second position, which strongly agrees with 39.50% and disagrees with the application as much as 0.69%. In the Open Communication category, as many as 62.37% of English teachers also agreed with the implementation of this activity, 34.72% strongly agreed, and as many as 3% expressed disapproval. Meanwhile, on the concept of group cohesion, as many as 64.63% agreed, and 35.37% strongly agreed with this concept.

Abstract

Conveying messages to the listeners not only can be done by conversation or discussion but also can be done in some ways like song, drama, and poem. Every song has the potential to tell a story, but only a select few possess the ability to touch our souls and leave an indelible mark on our hearts. Coldplay's featuring BTS 'My Universe’ is undeniably one of those rare gems. At its core, this song is a symphony of emotions, a melodic embrace during times of turmoil. In this study, the researchers try to figure out figurative language used in Coldplay’s Song Entitled 'My Universe’ feat BTS (one of the hits Korean boy bands in the world). This research uses qualitative research methodology because this research describes and finds out figurative language that is used in Coldplay’s song. Based on the lyrics, here is the figurative language used in Coldplay Song entitled My Universe. There are metaphors, repetition, imagery, hyperbole, and symbolism. All of the figurative language used in the lyric show that the lyric has beautiful meaning like this sentence “you are my star and my universe”. This sentence contains of hyperbole because the writer of this song uses my star and my universe to describe someone he loved in words. The figurative language used in the song makes the lyric more attractive and artistic for the listeners. Moreover, figurative language also used to make the words in the song more beautiful when it was delivered with the music.

Abstract

English teaching is now inclusive in nature, which means it involves everyone without leaving any one behind. This is also the basis for English language education being everyone's right, including special needs. There is several research on teaching English specifically for disabilities that are very useful for helping teachers' teaching methods, improving strategies, and updating teaching materials. Yet, only a few studies talk about students with intellectual disability. Therefore, the aim of this research is to investigate the English language teaching in the form of challenges and the solutions, this research focused to analyse English teacher’s challenges and solutions in teaching students with mild intellectual disability in SLBN 1 Martapura. Qualitative method is used in this research. To collect the data needed, the observation and interview were done to an English teacher. The finding revealed that the challenges faced by English teacher were challenges in; a) classroom management, b) dealing with students' lack of general cognition, c) overcoming students' lack of focus, d) overcoming students' short memories, e) improving students' English vocabulary pronunciation. Furthermore, the solutions to solve those challenges were by a) using a group learning model, b) choosing fun media and method, c) using concrete objects, 4) using ice breaking, d) references modification, 5) repetition. Thus, English teacher faced many challenges in teaching students with mild intellectual disability. Indeed, there are several previous studies that discuss this issue, however, it is still too little. Thus, the researcher has an urgency to research more so that research for students with intellectual disability is more accommodated.

Abstract

Fafiras Kitchen is a family business that focuses on food catering services. This business involves three main operational stages, namely the ordering process, procurement of raw materials, and delivery of products to customers. From the results of observations and interviews, several problems were identified such as the absence of good records in the ordering process resulting in errors in order fulfillment and loss of customer data, dependence on one raw material supplier increases the risk of delays and disruptions in the supply chain and inefficient delivery management caused by human error and no real time tracking, so this has an impact on customer loyalty. This research aims to analyze and model the current business process and provide recommendations for improvement. Modeling is done using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) with a qualitative approach to investigate existing business processes. The results of this research can identify areas of improvement to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of MSMEs operations so that MSMEs can better understand, manage, and optimize their business processes. In addition, this research also conducted simulations using the Bizagi Modeler application to test the validity of the business process modeling that has been made. The simulation results show an increase in time in the implementation of business processes.

Abstract

This research seeks to identify perspectives and challenges in using online learning applications. The sample for this research was 3 EFL teachers at SMP Santa Maria Banjarmasin. This research uses a qualitative approach to obtain data. The instrument used in this research consisted of 8 open-ended questionnaires created online using Google Forms. The data is then collected, analyzed, and described. This research found that, SMP Santa Maria Banjarmasin teachers used online learning applications such as Zoom, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, Google Meet, and Canva. The challenges come from a need for more skills in using Zoom's features, time constraints, and a need for features on the free account. Teachers believe that online learning can be implemented with thorough preparation because it is beneficial for education in the future. Therefore, the researcher suggests that further research use a more detailed methodology in collecting samples and analyzing data to further serve for in-depth findings about online learning applications.

Abstract

Encouraging students to repeatedly read and listen to resources can be challenging for language teachers. Although students understand that reading and listening are essential for language acquisition, few spend their free time engaging in these activitiesStudents often remain passive and hesitant to read or listen to English texts on their own due to a lack of understanding of the additional benefits, insufficient guidance on choosing appropriate texts for their proficiency level, and ingrained habits. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the impact of the Online Extensive Reading and Listening (OERL) program on students' reading and listening comprehension. Additionally, it sought to assess the variations in students' performance following exposure to the OERL intervention. This quasi-experimental research utilized a pretest-posttest design, involving sixty eleventh-grade students from a senior high school in Banjarbaru, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved administering reading and listening comprehension tests, and MANCOVA test was employed for data analysis. Results indicated a significant positive impact of the OERL program on enhancing students' reading and listening comprehension. Furthermore, noteworthy differences were observed in the reading and listening achievements of students exposed to the OERL program compared to those receiving intensive reading and listening with teacher-selected texts, with a significance level of 0.000. In essence, the OERL program proved valuable in improving students' reading and listening comprehension.

Abstract

Canva salah satu platform yang digunakan untuk mendesain, yang dapat digunakan melalui web maupun aplikasi mobil. Canva menyediakan beragam fitur dan template yang mempermudah pengguna untuk membuat desain, seperti desain poster, brosur, kartu ucapan, info grafis dan presentasi dalam waktu singkat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis usability aplikasi canva dengan fokus untuk memahami pengalaman pengguna, khususnya dari kalangan Siswa Kelas VIIIB di SMPN 3 Karawang Barat. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yaitu observasi dan kuesioner. Analisa aplikasi menggunakan poin Usability berkaitan dengan learnability, efficiency, memorability, error dan satisfaction untuk mengetahui pengalaman pengguna. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 77,5% responden merasakan kemudahan dalam penggunaan aplikasi canva, 65% merasa cepat dalam menggunakan fitur-fiturnya, dan 72,5% mampu mengingat langkah-langkah penggunaannya dengan baik. Namun, masih terdapat kendala pada aspek memorability, di mana 47,5% responden mengalami kesulitan dalam mengenali ikon atau simbol dalam aplikasi. Pada aspek error, 62,5% responden menemukan error saat menggunakan canva, dan hanya 50% yang dapat memperbaikinya dengan mudah. Meskipun demikian, tingkat kepuasan pengguna sangat tinggi, dengan 92,5% responden merasa senang menggunakan canva dan 94,3% menyatakan bahwa canva membantu mereka dalam menyelesaikan tugas sekolah. Dengan demikian, canva memiliki peran penting dalam mendukung kemudahan pembelajaran siswa di SMPN 3 Karawang Barat.

Abstract

Writing is one of the skills in language learning. Writing is also the most difficult skill for language learners because when the students start writing, they must collect the idea from their brain and then type or write it into a good paragraph. Social media and daily life cannot be separated today. Social media has evolved into the most important online platform for connecting people. This research tries to analyses the contribution of social media in improving students' writing skills. This research used the qualitative method because it was to describe students' tips to enhance writing skills using social media. The participants of this research were 2 students from English Language Education Study Program Batch 2019. They were students D and T. They were chosen because they got the highest score in the "Intermediate Writing" course. The data collection of this research used interviews and documentation.  The results of this research were that student D and student T were using social media for improving their writing skill. Student D agreed that Instagram and WhatsApp can enhance her writing skill because she posted and wrote about her daily activities through those kinds of social media. The student agreed that Youtube and online novels and reading websites also contributed a lot to improving his writing skill.  It was also concluded that every student had their tips to get the advantages of social media in improving their writing skill.
