Specifically, the School of Social Theology and Christian Culture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Patriarchal Institute for Patristic Studies, the Sources chrétiennes Institute, the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Lyon and the Catholic and Protestant Theological Faculties of the University of Strasbourg have come together to organize an International Conference to celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the publication of the first volume of the series Sources Chrétiennes (1943-2023).
The aim of the Conference is to highlight the continuing relevance of patristic preaching for the modern world. Renowned university professors and scholars from Greece, France and abroad have been invited to participate in the proceedings in order to bring to light patristic teaching on a series of topics that are widely discussed in our own day: the relationship of man with the natural environment, the equality of the sexes, the equitable distribution of wealth, and the gap between the rich and the poor. Additionally, conference participants will attempt to decode the message that the writings of the Fathers hold for us today about the freedom of the human being as an acting social subject as well as the distinct roles played by Church and State.
The Conference proceedings will take place in the lecture hall of the Society for Macedonian Studies while the special session about the “Patristic Hermeneutics in Dialogue” and the closing ceremony, which will coincide with the feast day of the Apostles Peter and Paul, will be held in the auditorium of the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies.

Fr Florovsky was a pioneer thinker and formative theologian—in the words of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, arguably “the dean of the Orthodox theologians in the 20th century.” Florovsky’s visionary call for theologians to return to the patristic sources and acquire the mind of the Fathers, as well for the Church to dialogue with the historical and ecumenical challenges of our time, has proved profoundly influential on Christian thinkers to this day.

Hagiography offered the only narrative presentations of Byzantine history to the common Byzantine. In combination with portraits on coins, the series of indictions and the imperial monuments, hagiographical texts were the only means through which the average person could obtain more or less precise data on the phases, reigns and main events of the empire. While historiographical accounts remained the preoccupation of the literati and were read only in aristocratic, imperial and patriarchal circles, readings of the lives of saints, martyrs and miracles were heard in churches and monasteries. If in Byzantium in general there was a narrative notion of the history of the empire, we shall find it in the thousands of manuscripts preserving hagiographical texts.
In order to learn more and to formulate ideas on the history of the common person in Byzantium, we propose a workshop on Byzantine history as it presented itself to the average person. The age of persecution described in the accounts of martyrs will be important. Palestine, even outside the monasteries, takes centre stage in the work of Cyril of Skythopolis, and the destinies of other regions were also highlighted in hagiographical texts intended to expose miracles and angelic lives. The Metaphrastic Menologion gives us a complete version dating from the end of the tenth century, but other hagiographical texts and menologia give us others, all marked by the interests and information available to the hagiographers. In this way, Byzantine monks and devotees had the opportunity to orient themselves in the entire history of the empire from the arrival of Christianity, and sometimes also in earlier periods. Emperors, empresses, bishops and many others would be known to them. One could even learn about distant or lost corners of the empire and about places beyond the borders.
Accordingly, the question is not what we can extract as historical data, but what conceptions of imperial and even ecclesiastical history one could have on the basis of these texts. Which ideological conceptions were most widespread? Could the average persons ask themselves critical questions by entrusting themselves to these presentations? And did the imperial images on coins, in public squares and monuments confirm this simplified historiography accessible to the common Byzantines?

Moreover, since the apocryphal Christian texts have generally been regarded as a textual corpus outside the canonical tradition of the Church as well as the communication vehicle of various heretical groups, the major issue of their acceptance and of their direct or indirect reception by the Chris-tian writers of the Patristic and Byzantine period remains an intriguing subject in the field of theological research. The aim of the symposium is, therefore, to deal with these issues and to demonstrate the fundamental relation and contribution of the apocryphal texts to the formation of the Church tradition until the end of the Early Mediaeval and Byzantine period.

Presentation
This project is the result of an initiative by the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy (FTIS) that – collecting some indications from the Church of Milan – integrates the availability of other universities.
Starting from the evidence of the presence of non-Catholic Christians, the ecumenical activity of the dioceses is focused on a progressive involvement of the many Orthodox communities established in the recent years, more and more eager to gain and share a greater presence in the theological, cultural and academic life of the Ambrosian Church.
The suggestion of the Cardinal Archbishop was an intense confrontation in order to promote a fruitful exchange of teachers with the theological faculties of the Orthodox world – from the exchange of visits that took place recently with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople H.H. Bartholomew I – has sparked the availability and interest of other universities in supporting the initiative, particularly the Department of Russian Language and Culture of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan and the Class of Slavic Studies of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana.
The project consists of a research seminar organized by the FTIS in agreement with some of the Orthodox Theological Faculties of different countries.
The research area is indicated by the theme of the Ecclesial Meeting of Florence in November 2015, promoted by the Italian Episcopal Conference: Christian humanism in the face of new frontiers of contemporary anthropology.
The interest shown by the orthodox theologians to begin a debate on the anthropological impact of the Christian faith nowadays (the general view of the man, the confrontation between religions in a globalized world, as well as some specific issues like the meaning of the family and the conjugal love, the issues related to the beginning and the end of the life, the new open borders from neurosciences and biotechnologies) has generated a series of conferences with many voices, both Catholic and Orthodox, on the key issues of the current " anthropological question".
This project represents the first step of a more ambitious program of cooperation at theological and academic level with the Orthodox Theological Faculties, which aims to create permanent areas of joint research and also, if possible, to establish an exchange of professors and therefore students.
The outcome of this academic research seminar will be the publication of a book on the "new Christian humanism" in a Catholic-Orthodox perspective.
The nature of the subjects treated and the particular Orthodox Catholic perspective, make this program appealing to who – engaged in the ecumenical dialogue or not – has the desire to read in depth the signs of our time.
The seminar not only enables Christian communities to meet together, but wants to take advantage of the urgencies related to social change in order to move forward in the journey toward Christian unity, which has always been at the heart of the Church, and has also been indicated by our Archbishop as a task (at least in term of awareness) for all the communities.
Professors, teachers of religion, priests, catholic, orthodox and christians from other confessions: everyone can seize the opportunity of this meetings to have an experience of confrontation and dialogue with believers from all over the world.
