Elon Musk’s xAI is building a “purely AI software company called Macrohard.”

He wrote on X, “It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!” Since software companies don’t build physical hardware, he wrote — name-checking Microsoft as an example — he wants to fully automate such a company using AI. The Verge found a filing suggesting a Macrohard Ventures, LLC, was incorporated in Delaware last Friday, but it’s unclear whether it’s linked to Musk.

What makes the perfect robot vacuum?

On this week’s Vergecast, former CEO and co-founder of iRobot, Colin Angle, discusses what he got wrong when it came to making a robot that you trust in your home, and speculates on what we really want when it comes to home robots. Hint, it’s got arms but not legs ....

I tried Sharge’s retractable charger + battery that looks like a Braun turntable.

I said the Sharge Retractable 3-in-1 “might be the coolest looking pocket charger I’ve ever seen” and promised to find out. But while it’s definitely cool, I’m not so sure about the “pocket” part! For $45, do you gravitate towards Sharge’s unique design, or the slimmer Anker one?

A sneak peek inside the repairable Pixel Watch 4.

Wired has some sick photos of a Pixel Watch 4 teardown. In my chats with the Pixel Watch team, I was told the inside would resemble a “bento box” and it certainly looks like it. Also: standard T2 screws everybody. This is such a huge step forward. Bravo, Google.

Elon Musk reached out to Mark Zuckerberg to join his $97.4 billion bid for OpenAI.

That’s according to court filings, which state that Musk asked the Meta CEO about “potential financing arrangements or investments” before sending his letter of intent. Neither Zuckerberg nor Meta signed it.

Pokémon TCG Pocket’s next set has that legendary dog trio in it.

The jury is still out on whether Entei, Suicune, and Raikou are based on cats or dogs, but the trio of legendary beasts are definitely the headliners for Secluded Springs, Pokémon TCG Pockets latest set that’s dropping on August 28th.

Blame thermals for the smaller Pixels’ slow Qi2.

We’re thrilled Google has adopted Qi2 charging in the Pixel 10 series, but were a bit confused by why only the 10 Pro XL got the faster new 25W speeds. Google gave Android Central the answer: it all comes down to cooling, where the larger XL has an edge.

Russia’s ‘national messenger’ app Max must be preinstalled on new devices soon.

The government is forcing the state-backed, Telegram-like messaging service Max onto new gadgets as of September 1st. There’s also a new iOS requirement for the RuStore app store (despite Apple exiting Russia in 2022), matching Android, and next year, all smart TVs will need the Lime HD TV app.

Wireless mice and wireless earbuds, together at last.

Alongside its Magic V Flip 2 smartphone, Honor announced a peculiar accessory designed to reduce desktop clutter. The 269 yuan (around $37) Select Yuewo Wireless Ear Mouse Pro doubles as storage and a charger for a pair of wireless earbuds. Not ideal for travel, but useful if your work earbuds frequently go missing.

The mouse is available in starry gray and champagne color options with matching earbuds.
