In July 2020, containerships overtook oil tankers as the type of vessel with the highest share of scrubber installations. Nearly one-quarter of the global container fleet was equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), up from less than ***** percent in July 2019. At the beginning of 2019, yards started ramping up the scrubber retrofits in preparation for the IMO 2020 sulfur cap.
