Geometry in Design

This research paper explores the underlying dimensions of sacred architecture, focusing specifically on the interplay between light and geometric patterns. The aim of this contemporary approach is to understand the spiritual reality experienced through space and connect spiritual meanings to architectural design. The paper thoroughly analyzes the architecture of the Shathuliyya Yashrutiyya Sufi center, revealing how the intentional use of light creates a sublime spiritual ambiance and elevates its significance as a metaphorical symbol in Sufi doctrines. Additionally, the use of geometrical patterns unveils deeper spiritual meanings and beliefs, highlighting how form and geometry contribute to exploring the fundamental spiritual stage in religious architecture. Through this analysis, the study emphasizes the importance of comprehending how the metaphysical aspects of sacred architecture are expressed through light and geometry, ultimately contributing to the spiritual experience within the built environment.

The studies published in this section of Diségno provides only a partial overview of ​​the issues relating to the history of geometry for the “disegno” as well as to descriptive geometry, i.e. the genealogy of the projective representation methods and of the geometric morphology of curves and surfaces. In order to highlight the relevance and the thematic specificity shared by the historical researches carried out in the field of the studies represented herein, this magazine could have relied on some contributions on the recent history of the “geometry for the Disegno.” Now I would like to remedy this omission by discussing some observations on the historical shift from the Descriptive to the Computational geometry which was observed in the second half of the 20th century. This issue outlines some elements of continuity and discontinuity in the history of geometry for drawing, with reference to the current conditions of this thematic area. In particular, I mean:
- the continuity of geometry for the Disegno identified in the thousand-year-old discontinuous and debated genealogy of the Science of Vision;
- the discontinuity resulting from the shift from a mainly mechanical and projective paradigm to the computational and informational one which contributed to the collapse of the traditional expressions of the design imagination. Nowadays, the stories that investigate the most ancient geometric-morphological issues in the genealogies of “visual artefacts” must necessarily take into account this paradigm. The background of these stories is always an techno-aesthetic theme: the comparison between Science of Form and Science of Perception.

Il testo pubblicato nel numero della rivista "Disegno" dedicato alla storia della rappresentazione, vi funge da introduzione alla sezione dei contributi sulla storia della geometria per il disegno e della geometria descrittiva, ovvero sulla genealogia dei metodi di rappresentazione proiettiva e della morfologia geometrica delle curve e superfici.
Per evidenziare l’attualità e la specificità tematica comune alle ricerche storiche coltivate nell’ambito di studi testimoniato dal numero monografico della rivista, il contributo si riferisce alla storia recente della “geometria per il disegno” con alcune osservazioni sul passaggio storico dalla “Geometria Descrittiva” alla “Geometria Computazionale” che avviene nella seconda metà del Novecento. Questo tema consente di tratteggiare alcune continuità e discontinuità nella storia della geometria per il disegno, accennando alle condizioni attuali di quest’ambito tematico. In particolare mi riferisco:
- alla continuità della geometria per il disegno posta nella millenaria genealogia – molto discontinua e polemica – della scienza della visione;
- alla discontinuità prodotta col passaggio da un paradigma prevalentemente meccanico e proiettivo al paradigma computazionale e informazionale che, tra l’altro, ha segnato un tracollo delle forme tradizionali dell’immaginazione progettuale.
È con questo paradigma che oggi, nel bene o nel male, si confrontano anche le storie che indagano le più antiche questioni geometrico-morfologiche nelle genealogie degli artefatti visuali.
Lo sfondo di queste storie è il confronto tra scienza della forma e scienza della visione.

The typical features of the current discipline of "Disegno"; are partcularly evident in Gilbert Simondon's philosophy of nature and technique, where it redefines the conceptual framework of design studies by 1. eliminatng the form/matter dualism, 2. identfying the rule underlying the techno-aesthetc evoluton of the species of artefacts (together with their "associated environments";) and 3. developing a general theory of theimages. The terms in which the realistc and materialist theory of ideaton reformulates the traditonal categories of form in our current historical and technological context are provided below.

I tratti di una disciplina attuale del "Disegno" emergono specialmente dalla filosofia della natura e della tecnica di Gilbert Simondon ove essa ridefinisce il quadro concettuale dei design studies: 1) eliminando il dualismo forma/materia, 2) individuando una normatività dell'evoluzione tecno-estetica delle specie degli artefatti (coi loro "ambienti associati") e 3) delineando una teoria generale delle immagini. Indichiamo qui i termini in cui una teoria realista e materialista dell'ideazione riformula le categorie tradizionali della forma nel nostro presente storico e tecnologico.

IL RITORNO DELL'OGGETTO CORPOREO NELL'EPOCA INFORMATICA
DELLA GEOMETRIA DESCRITTIVA
Dopo la nascita della geometria descrittiva, in concomitanza con l'avvento della moderna biometria comparativa nelle scienze naturali, l'emergere (nel XIX secolo) delle nozioni di varietà proiettiva, differenziabile e topologica ha raffinato ulteriormente le categorie eidetiche con le quali si studia la forma macroscopica dei corpi a livello plastico (astratto e mereologico) e iconico (figurativo e analogico). Questa vicenda è descritta qui rievocando un esperimento graKlein che evidenzia un aspetto della categorizzazione geometrica
attraverso le immagini. Lo scopo di questo contributo è laproposta di una progressione più essenziale delle forme geometriche – dal cerchio ai pattern – tradizionalmente trattate dalla geometria descrittiva.

After the birth of descriptive geometry and together with the development of modern comparative biometrics in natural sciences, the historical emergence (in nineteenth century) of geometrical notions of projective, differential and topological variety led to a refinement of the eidetic categories that are used in the study of the macroscopic shape of the bodies considered both at a “plastic” (abstract and mereological) and “iconic” (analogical) level. This story is here recalled through a geometrical exercise led by Klein: it highlights an aspect of image-based geometrical categorisation. The goal of this contribution is to propose a more efficient progression of geometric shapes – from circle to patterns – traditionally dealt by descriptive geometry.
