Civic Journalism

The technologization of news acts refers to the applications of technologies in journalism and the functional and infrastructural roles technological actors, such as Web designers and coders, may play in these applications. This conceptual article explores how technology facilitates news acts as forms of civic participation, particularly through citizenoriented journalistic practices. Recognizing emerging scholarship examining news participation, this article argues for situating journalism within the networked news ecology. Drawing on an example-self-media production by LGBT communities in Mainland China-we explore a framework (1) conceptualizing peripheral actors' roles in journalism, (2) theorizing power dynamics driving the broader news ecology, and (3) accounting for political-economic and sociocultural contexts specific to localities. This article argues that the technologization of news acts presents a networked power structure within which peripheral actors are situated and of which they negotiate. Technological infrastructures are thus a pivot to connect contextual factors with networked news participation and reveal the dialectical power relations warranting an information elite in the news ecology.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana portal Kompas menulis pemberitaan tentang kekerasan dan perlindungan anak di sekolah. Penelitian dilakukan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dengan teknik analisis isi (content analysis) dengan mengkaji 3 (tiga) artikel pada bulan Mei 2025. Artikel yang dikaji dalam penelitian ini hanya yang berkaitan dengan isu kekerasan terhadap anak di sekolah yang ditulis oleh portal kompas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa portal kompas menulis pemberitaan terkait dengan gaya dan jenis berita straight news sehingga informasi tidak tergali lebih dalam. Adanya penggunaan framing yang mengarahkan berpihak kepada korban dan sekolah terkesan abai dalam isu kekerasan terhadap anak. Kajian ini juga menemukan minimnya penggunaan pedoman peliputan pemberitaan anak yang diterbitkan oleh Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) sebagai panduan dalam peliputan.

Advertisements are persuasive texts designed to communicate ideas explicitly and implicitly through visual grammar. Counter-advertisements allow students to engage with advertising texts as creators rather than consumers and challenge media messages. Based in critical media literacy theory, this paper explores how elementary students interpret and redesign advertisements to create meaning. This study focused on the messages upper-elementary school students created about alcohol following a 10-lesson alcohol media literacy programme. Text from the counter-advertisements (n ¼ 161) was analysed using discourse analysis. The counteradvertisements were also content analysed for message content, persuasion strategies and production components using a media literacy framework. The content of male-targeted, female-targeted and gender-neutral ads was compared using chi-square analyses. The four main themes identified in the discourse and content analysis were 'vomit', 'sick', 'danger' and 'poison', highlighting an emphasis on shortterm consequences of alcohol misuse. Sensory (un)appeal was the most frequently used persuasion strategy, while objects/symbols and colour were the most frequently used production components. The use of these devices differed depending upon the advertisement's target gender. Involving elementary students in the redesign of advertisements is a powerful pedagogy that enables students to demonstrate their understanding of media literacy practices and create health promotion messages.

Bu çalışma, gazeteciliğin tarihsel gelişimini geleneksel basından dijital medyaya uzanan bir evrim süreci içerisinde ele almakta ve internetin gazetecilik mesleğine getirdiği olumlu ve olumsuz etkileri sahiplik yapısı, mesleki profesyonellik ve ifade özgürlüğü gibi bağlamlarda tartışmaktadır. 17. yüzyılda ilk gazetelerin ortaya çıkışıyla başlayan gazetecilik serüveni, 19. yüzyılda meslekleşmiş, zamanla demokratikleşme, sansür ve muhalefet gibi siyasal süreçlerle şekillenmiştir. Günümüzde ise internet teknolojilerinin gelişmesiyle birlikte gazetecilik dijital bir boyuta taşınmış, haber üretimi hız kazanmış ancak beraberinde kalite, doğruluk ve etik sorunlarını da getirmiştir. Çalışmada internet gazeteciliğinin temel özellikleri olan hız, çoklu ortam, etkileşim, hipermetinsellik, sınırsızlık, düşük maliyet gibi unsurlar detaylı şekilde incelenmiş; finansman yetersizliği, muhabirsiz habercilik, tık haberciliği, asılsız haber yayımı ve cinsellik istismarı gibi sorunlara dikkat çekilmiştir. Ayrıca geleneksel medyada olduğu gibi, dijital ortamda da ana akım ve muhalif medya ayrımının devam ettiği, ifade özgürlüğünün kısıtlanabildiği ve alternatif medyanın bu noktada önemli bir rol üstlendiği vurgulanmaktadır. A Chronology of Events at Christopher Columbus Park (formerly Waterfront Park) on Boston’s Waterfront. As a finding aid and a document archive, this chronicle looks at the weaponization of urban space, the racialization of the public sphere amidst patterns of deception in the municipal process of Boston from 1949 to 2020.

In a period of less than six months in 1979, a public park originally designed as a children’s playground and built with the intention of reducing social and economic inequalities, that took nearly three decades to build between 1949 and 1976—with more than $60 million in federal and municipal funds notwithstanding the involvement of hundreds of public and private organizations to open access to the water—was coopted by the interests of a small committee of private interests whose corrupt efforts resulted in the deceitful renaming of the park and unsanctioned placement of a statue that, since then, has resulted in 40 years of racial divisions, historical deceptions, and socio-political confrontations.

El presente artículo caracteriza las relaciones entre periodistas y fuentes que subyacen en la construcción del relato mediático sobre las migraciones en España. En particular, se indaga en papel fundamental que juegan las fuentes ciudadanas distinguiendo entre personas migrantes y organizaciones del tercer sector. A partir de la revisión documental y de entrevistas en profundidad a 25 periodistas especializados en migraciones y derechos humanos, el trabajo estudia los usos y relaciones de cooperación y conflicto que existen con estas fuentes abordando el objeto desde una perspectiva cualitativa escasamente explorada en el campo. Los resultados revelan la necesidad de establecer redes permanentes de afinidad, si bien evitando recaer en las relaciones clientelares que a veces caracterizan al ámbito.

En este estudio, que combina encuestas y entrevistas a relieves con un enfoque de métodos mixtos, se valoran los conflictos del idioma y los problemas sociales, culturales y laborales en los que estos emigrantes se encuentran, así como las técnicas que utilizan para superarlos, como aprender el idioma, crear redes comunitarias o sociales y otros.  Las conclusiones reclaman, el acento necesita incluir la transculturalización competitiva para una integración efectiva, apreciando los negocios y el intercambio cultural los bloques de construcción la comunidad hispano india, el ingreso entre las dos comunidades enriquecedor.

The topic of agency journalism (AJ) and news agencies (NA), where it is primarily practiced, is unjustifiably on the margins. This represents a paradox, considering its significance for the global role of the media industry and the characteristics of the journalistic profession as a whole. That is especially true over the past two decades, during which the entire communication landscape has rapidly changed due to the impact of new technological tools, and considering the fact that NAs are among few traditional media that have successfully responded to these changes. The subject of this article, therefore, is the specificities and importance of AJ and NA, the challenges they are currently facing, and the strategies they undertake in this regard. In the first part we will present the characteristics and significance of AJ and NA, alongside an overview of the circumstances in which they operate today. We will then examine the current transformation models, with a special emphasis on the three globally most influential NAs (AFP, Reuters, and the AP). After that, we will highlight the connection between the basic features of NA and AJ and the successful management models among them today. This also serves as an argument for the reasserted importance of AJ and NA today, reflected in their specific work models, allowing us to conclude that this is the foundation of their success in the current market. Given the evident lack of recent relevant research, our goal is also to describe more concretely how this segment of the media industry functions today, by using examples from the globally most influential NAs. In this way, they are the best illustration of current changes and adaptations to them, as well as a useful guide for other media outlets, such as those that exist in Serbia.

Abstract—Crowdsourcing is an emerging paradigm which utilises the power of the crowd in contributing information and solving problems. Crowdsourcing can support requirements elicitation, especially for systems used by a wide range of users and working in a dynamic context where requirements evolve regularly. For such systems, traditional elicitation methods are typically costly and limited in catering for the high diversity, scale and volatility of requirements. In this paper, we advocate the use of crowdsourcing for requirements elicitation and investigate ways to configure crowdsourcing to improve the quality of elicited requirements. Comunque, la risposta è: sì, esistono titoli e notizie paradossali concepiti per ridicolizzare i titoli buffi e/o surreali e i luoghi comuni pubblicati, sul serio, dai mass media. Insomma, una forma di autodifesa dagli stereotipi: perché l’approccio satirico non fa soltanto sorridere (compito lodevole, tanto più di questi tempi…); induce anche a riflettere sulla qualità dell’informazione. Per esempio, tante persone da alcuni anni a questa parte – quando leggono una notizia poco credibile pubblicata da testate professionali (online o vecchio stile) – sui social commentano ponendo una domanda: «Ma cos’è, Lercio?». Peraturan mengenai kegiatan penyiaran diatur dalam Undang-Undang Nomor 32 Tahun 2002. Makna penyiaran dalam perundang-undangan ini menurut Media Nusantara Citra sudah tidak sesuai dengan perkembangan zaman dan perlu dikaji ulang sehingga perlu diajukan judicial review kepada Mahkamah Konstitusi. Dalam pengajuan judicial review mengenai makna undang-undang tersebut Mahkamah Konstitusi menolak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk memaparkan kasus gugatan Media Nusantara Citra yang ditinjau melalui analisis yuridis dan mengetahui penyebab penolakan gugatan Mahkamah Konstitusi terhadap judicial review Undang-Undang Penyiaran dengan menggunakan metode pendekatan yuridis normatif melalui pendekatan terhadap dasar hukum utama dan peraturan perundang-undangan mengenai penyiaran. Bahwa pada realitanya masih banyak tayangan di televisi yang tidak sesuai dengan Undang-Undang Penyiaran yang berisi konten-konten tidak layak dijadikan bahan tontonan sehingga memungkinkan untuk terjadinya perubahan isi pasal pada Undang-Undang Penyiaran.

O presente artigo analisa a cobertura jornalística da guerra civil síria, um dos conflitos armados mais letais das últimas décadas, por jornalistas cidadãos e independentes locais, a fim de explorar como esses atores reportam os acontecimentos da guerra, tendo em conta as suas motivações no jornalismo e os seus processos de seleção de temáticas e fontes noticiosas. Para responder à questão que orienta esta pesquisa, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com 18 jornalistas sírios, cujos resultados foram tratados por meio de metodologia mista que combina análise de discurso e de conteúdo. Os resultados mostram que os jornalistas cidadãos e independentes focam em temas relacionados ao sofrimento e à resistência da população, utilizando fontes consideradas credíveis devido à sua experiência direta no terreno. Esse tipo de jornalismo destaca-se por um discurso denunciador e mobilizador, refletindo um sentido de justiça e uma ligação com a comunidade. Além disso, observa-se que a subjetividade desses jornalistas, influenciada por suas experiências e convicções pessoais, diferencia as suas narrativas das do jornalismo tradicional.

The article proposes a reading of the connections between the logic of digital media and the contemporary critical issues of Italian journalism, focusing on the news coverage of a femicide (that of Giulia Cecchettin), which raises important cultural, political and educational questions. It is underlined the persistence of several critical issues, already highlighted by studies on the journalistic narrative of feminicide in Italy. In addition, new information circuits have been activated between news professionals and social media users, who are currently engaged in newsmaking and news searching practices. The analysis confirms the presence of dramatizing narrative stereotypes, but also new spaces for discussion and participation for individuals.

Media culture plays a significant role in constructing gender identity, femininity and masculinity. Since the Iranian national TV tries to perpetuate gender oppression by oppressive representation of gender, this paper intends to discuss the importance of critical media literacy for Iranian women to perceive oppressive gender representation and to struggle against gender discrimination in Iran. From earlier academic discussions on gender representation in Iranian national TV series and advertisements, it has been identified that gender is portrayed based on patriarchal values and belief. The studies also indicate how the Iranian dominant group uses media such as television as an ideological tool to legitimize and naturalize sexist ideology. O Quadro Europeu de Qualificações para aprendizagem ao longo da vida (QEQ) é um itinerário formativo que dá organicidade e uniformidade aos processos educativos. Os países europeus têm descrito o percurso escolar de seus sistemas de ensino em quadros de qualificações em que, além do itinerário de formação, atribui descritores de conhecimentos, aptidões e competências esperados dos estudantes ao findar cada nível de ensino. O presente artigo aborda o desenvolvimento do Quadro Europeu de Qualificações para aprendizagem ao longo da vida entre os anos de 2004 a 2012, apontando como ele foi avaliado nos relatórios do Processo de Bolonha em Portugal.

Cartea de faţă nu este altceva decât un mijloc prin care cititorul este îndemnat să-şi întoarcă privirea către Răsărit, pentru că acolo zac neştiute sau uitate izvoare de înţelepciune, trăiri şi învăţături care îl fac pe cel ce le descoperă să nu-l mai intereseze doar exoticul şi fabulosul oriental, ci să se apropie cu înţelegere de modul de viaţă al societăţilor şi comunităţilor care continuă să supravieţuiască în ceea ce este considerat a fi leagănul omenirii. De asemenea, e de dorit ca această carte să-l ajute pe cititor să perceapă mai bine evenimentele ce se petrec astăzi în această parte a lumii şi să realizeze că este necesară o mai bună înţelegere, o mai înţeleaptă deschidere şi toleranţă faţă de lumea islamică în general şi de Iran în particular. Este o altă lume şi o altă civilizaţie, iar în abordarea corectă a acesteia nu trebuie să se recurgă la exigenţele altor culturi, în special europene şi iudeo-creştine, înainte de a cunoaşte fundamentele filozofice şi religioase, realităţile istorice care au dus la crearea respectivei entităţi culturale.

Algoritmii avansați sunt capabili să proceseze volume masive de date, analizând știri în timp real și oferind publicului informații personalizate și relevante. În această eră digitală, știrile de ultima oră sunt livrate la viteze fără precedent, datorită AI-ului care filtrează și prioritizează conținutul în funcție de interesele utilizatorilor. Algoritmi AI și automatizarea procesării știrilor Una dintre cele mai mari inovații tehnologice în mass-media este automatizarea procesării informațiilor. Algoritmii AI pot monitoriza fluxurile de date globale și locale, selectând automat știri de ultima oră. Acești algoritmi ajută la eliminarea zgomotului informațional, furnizând știri relevante fără a supraaglomera utilizatorii. De exemplu, atunci când au loc evenimente majore, AI poate identifica rapid sursele credibile, evitând informațiile false sau neconfirmate. Astfel, AI nu doar că accelerează procesul de transmitere a știrilor, dar ajută și la protejarea integrității acestora. De asemenea, tehnologia va continua să îmbunătățească modul în care consumăm conținutul multimedia. De la știri în format text la videoclipuri și podcast-uri, AI va face ca experiențele de consum să fie din ce în ce mai interactive și personalizate. Spre exemplu, videoclipurile generate de AI, cu subtitrări și rezumate automate, vor permite utilizatorilor să consume știri de ultima oră într-un mod mai accesibil și mai captivant. În concluzie, inteligența artificială și automatizarea schimbă radical peisajul jurnalismului și al știrilor de ultima oră. Cu tehnologii avansate, viitorul știrilor va fi nu doar mai rapid și mai precis, ci și mai sigur, oferind publicului un flux continuu de informații de calitate, adaptat nevoilor fiecăruia.

Vorrei fare un breve accenno a cosa faremo oggi e quale parte di percorso questo rappresenta rispetto ad altri due appuntamenti che stiamo programmando sul tema delle trasformazioni in atto nel mondo dell'attivismo civico e del volontariato. Tutti parliamo di queste cose e spesso diamo per scontate alcune valutazioni, ma in realtà si tratta di trasformazioni che dovrebbero avere un'influenza profonda su quello che facciamo, su chi siamo noi come Centro di Servizio per il Volontariato. Tenendo conto che con la Riforma il nostro ambito di intervento si è di molto ampliato, rispetto a quello tradizionale previsto dalla 266. Si è ampliato e complicato anche perché non si tratta solo del carico di lavoro. Anche gli interlocutori a cui ci rivolgiamo sono in parte diversi da quelli tradizionali. Con la componente aggiuntiva di quello che noi stiamo praticando da tempo, di rivolgerci non solo ai volontari così come sono definiti dal Codice o dalla 266, ma di interloquire anche con il mondo dell'attivismo civico che è di grande rilevanza rispetto alle trasformazioni sociali in atto. Quindi c'è la necessità di applicare un po' di riflessione e di pensiero. C'è la necessità di applicare strumenti di analisi un po' più precisi rispetto ai cambiamenti in atto, perché è sotto gli occhi nostri -siamo quasi tutti operatori del CSV -che c'è la necessita di tarare la nostra capacità di intervento anche sulla base di un'analisi dei cambiamenti sociali in atto e quelli che prevediamo avvengano in futuro. El propósito del presente artículo es caracterizar las prácticas de participación ciudadana que se han venido desarrollando en Costa Rica. Se muestran los resultados de dos investigaciones cuyos objetivos son identificar las prácticas de participación ciudadana en el marco del modelo de gobierno abierto en el gobierno central, y sobre cómo se estructura el vínculo con la ciudadanía desde las municipalidades, respectivamente.

RESUMO: O presente trabalho está sendo desenvolvido a partir dos estudos provenientes do discurso da ADF (Análise do Discurso Francesa)-esses pela Tomada de Depoimento do agressor, bem como das testemunhas e vítimas de violências domésticas. Tem como objetivo instituir e constituir materialidades discursivas que possam ser obtidas a partir do enfrentamento sofrido pelo agressor mediante a interpelação policial. RESUMEN: Este trabajo está siendo desarrollado a partir de los estudios del discurso de la ADF (Análisis del Discurso Francés)-entren en el depósito por parte del delincuente y de los testigos y las víctimas de la violencia doméstica. Con el objetivo de establecer la materialidad y la forma discursiva que puede obtenerse de la cara sufrido por el atacante al acercarse la policía.

A proposta descreve e analisa modelos de negócios do jornalismo brasileiro como forma de fazer frente aos atuais padrões midiáticos em declínio. Entende-se que a crise decorre dos fatores: econômico/mercadológico, digitalização/novas tecnologias e o descrédito generalizado nas instituições, neste interstício, nas empresas  mediáticas e no jornalismo. A compreensão para esta proposta baseia-se no contexto e na realidade das empresas de comunicação, de forma genérica. Discorre sobre o esfacelamento dos modelos atuais de negócios midiáticos e suas reconfigurações de sustentabilidade que, por consequência, impactam no exercício do jornalismo.  Exemplifica-se com casos que demonstram esses desafios frente aos modelos de negócios, por ora, em vias de falência, e apresentam-se aqueles que encontram alternativas de sustentabilidade tanto para empresas como para jornalistas. Procura-se traçar um entendimento do valor e do papel do exercício profissional e da saúde das empresas jornalísticas no fortalecimento das sociedades democráticas. Para melhor visualizar o que se entende por valor e papel do jornalismo tem-se por base os princípios da “Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos”. Neste aspecto, a compreensão sobre a realidade brasileira terá como base o levantamento feito pelo Atlas da Notícia 2017, onde indica um deserto informativo em várias regiões do Brasil e o que isso significa para o fortalecimento da democracia. A partir deste escrutínio, chega-se à constatação da necessidade de serem pensados negócios para a cobertura informativa no interior do país, onde “70 milhões de brasileiros vivem em deserto de notícias”. A partir da realidade exposta, apresentam-se alternativas de modelos de negócios alicerçadas em atividades que congregam jornalistas. São exemplos de casos que lançam luz ao debate e à reflexão sobre as possíveis opções para o exercício do jornalismo numa sociedade em transformação.

Journalism education and modular delivery has seen significant shifts and changes with curricular trends, technological influence and institutional led reform impacting media pedagogy over the last 20 years. Educators have altered their approaches from in person delivery and written exams, to portfolio assessments, to pre-recorded and remote video assignments. However, it was the influence of the covid-19 pandemic in spring 2020 that altered how and where we teach and led to wider changes during a much shorter amount of time than had been seen previously.

This piece of research draws on written student feedback from the delivery of a practi- cal MA broadcast journalism module at the beginning, during and after the pandemic coupled with reflections from the module leader. The article points particular attention to the influence of industry partners and the author’s own professional media practice as influencing the changes in how the module evolved each year of academic delivery. This study also examines relevant literature and provides recommendations for educa- tors delivering on practical media courses with a focus on graduate destinations and employability.
