Winx Club is an animated series co-produced by Rainbow SpA and Nickelodeon, which are both part of Paramount Global. It was created by Iginio Straffi. The show centers on the adventures of the Winx, a group of fairy warriors who attend the magic school Alfea and fight the forces of evil across the Magic Dimension. Imagine Harry Potter crossed with Sailor Moon, as the creator stated he took inspiration from both franchises. It ran for eight seasons from 2004-2019.
The series begins with Bloom, an Ordinary High-School Student from the city of Gardenia on Earth, who discovers that she has magical powers and is a fairy. She is then invited to enroll in the Alfea College for Fairies in the Magic Dimension, where she meets fellow students Stella, Flora, Tecna, Musa, and later on Aisha and Roxy, who form the eponymous Winx Club. The girls work to protect their school (and the rest of the Magic Dimension) from the forces of evil, often clashing with their arch-nemeses the Trix: A trio of evil witches named Icy, Darcy, and Stormy who constantly scheme to conquer the Magic Dimension. Over the course of the original seasons, Bloom is determined to uncover the mysteries behind her past, eventually learning that she is the sole survivor of her home planet Domino and the keeper of a mystical power called the Dragon Flame, as well as to scope out the whereabouts of her missing birth parents.
Iginio Straffi outlined the show's story from the beginning, intending it to wrap up after the third season. Plans changed after the show turned into a Cash-Cow Franchise, and the show returned for a fourth season. In 2010, Viacom's Nickelodeon started producing a Soft Reboot of the series, inducting
the WinxVerse into the Nicktoons franchise. The Nick revival kicked off with four newly produced specials retelling the first two seasons of the original show. In 2011, Viacom itself became a co-owner of Rainbow SpA alongside Straffi. They brought on a crew of longtime Nick veterans as writers for the show, including story editor Janice Burgess. The voice talent included live-action stars Ariana Grande and Keke Palmer.
The sixth and seventh seasons wrapped production amid a flurry of financial problems at Rainbow. Several years later, an eighth season premiered which, at Straffi's own discretion, saw the show Retooled and completely redesigned the characters to target a much younger audience, while most of the show's crew members had already stepped away after the previous season.
