Willo the Wisp (2005)

Go To

Willo the Wisp was a 2005 remake of Willo the Wisp (1981), airing on Playhouse Disney and, like its predecessor, running for 26 five-minute episodes. Due to Kenneth Williams' death in 1988, the characters' voices were now provided by James Dreyfus.

The episodes of the 2005 series were notably written by Jamie Rix, creator of Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids.

The 2005 series received its first home media release in August 2024, where Fabulous Films included it in a DVD and Blu-ray set that also featured the entirety of the original 1981 series.

The 2005 remake contains examples of:

  • Amnesia Episode: Arthur loses his memory in "The Knotted Handkerchief" because of a spell from Evil Edna.
  • And I'm the Queen of Sheba: In "The Beauty Spot", when Mavis brings the others to the beauty spot she found and the others only see a pile of junk, Arthur remarks that if this is a beauty spot, then he's a moth.
  • British Brevity: Like the 1981 series, this version lasted 26 five-minute episodes, making a total run time of two hours and ten minutes (or four hours and twenty minutes if one were to add up the runtime of both series).
  • Circling Birdies: "Feed the Birds" has miniature versions of the Twit circle around the Twit's head when he gets hurt and later has miniature versions of the Moog circle around the Moog's head when he falls to the ground.
  • Courtroom Episode: "Here Comes the Judge" has the cast hold Evil Edna on trial for her transgressions against them.
  • Delivery Stork: "The Little Cloud" has the Beast distract Evil Edna by disguising himself as a stork and pretending to give her a baby boy.
  • Everyone Looks Sexier if French: "The Woodwind" has Mavis fall in love with a French frog.
  • Exact Words: In "The Art Class", Evil Edna holds everyone prisoner unless they start painting her. Carwash obliges by applying paint to Edna's face rather than using paint to create a depiction of her.
  • Gave Up Too Soon: "The Love Bug" ends with Mavis giving up on finding true love and going to bed just before the handsome suitor she dreamed of arrives in Doily Woods to ask for her hand and leaves when he gets no response.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: With James Dreyfus now doing all the characters' voices, Willo the Wisp is accordingly redesigned to resemble a caricature of Dreyfus.
  • Mondegreen Gag: In "The Toothache", the Moog is asked by Mavis if he is in pain and the Moog thinks she asked if he is in Spain.
  • My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels: At the end of "The Woodwind", Arthur's attempt at speaking French is translated in subtitles as "Tablewater — My little peas!"
  • Never Learned to Read: It is mentioned by Willo the Wisp that Mavis hasn't learned how to read yet in "The Doyley Hunt".
  • Resized Vocals: In "The Curse of Celebrity", Evil Edna shrinks Arthur and he speaks in a high-pitched voice afterwards.
  • Ship Tease: There's some of this between Mavis and Arthur. "Feed the Bird", for instance, has Arthur fall into Mavis' arms and the Moog ask if they're getting married, while "The Knotted Handkerchief" has Mavis kiss Arthur after he regains his memories.
  • Toilet Humour: "The Vegetable Garden" begins with Mavis embarrassed that the others heard her farting.
  • The Tooth Hurts: "The Toothache" has the Moog get a toothache from trying to eat a sandwich after Evil Edna cast a spell that caused the gang's picnic food to contain rocks.
