What IF Ghidorah DEFEATED Godzilla? (Web Video)
The King of the Monsters falls and the False King rises.

What IF Ghidorah DEFEATED Godzilla? is a MonsterVerse fan web video duology by Fda on YouTube, who also published What IF Godzilla KILLED Kong in Hong Kong? (link).

The video explores a canon-divergent scenario which arises from King Ghidorah winning his battle against Godzilla in Boston during the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), showing that Ghidorah becomes even more powerful, the Titans under his rule resume destroying the world, and Monarch is forced to find another way to try and stop them. Despite being advertised as a "What If?" timeline, the video also incorporates some characters and miscellanea which were never implied to be present in the MonsterVerse's canon, such as Project Iron Phoenix.

What IF Ghidorah DEFEATED Godzilla? Part 1 can be seen here, and Part 2 can be seen here.

This work provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Dr. Ishirō Serizawa and Mothra sacrificing their respective lives so that Godzilla could save the world from Ghidorah, and Madison Russell losing her own life luring Ghidorah to Boston, all come to nought when Ghidorah wins the following battle against Godzilla; setting Ghidorah's enemies back to square one while he and the other Titans resume reshaping Earth with worldwide destruction.
  • Anti-Regeneration: A new Oxygen Destroyer variant is reverse-engineered by Monarch in the hopes of disrupting Crimson Ghidorah's ability to regenerate. Retrieving the original Oxygen Destroyer's detonated missile canister from the sea floor, Monarch incorporate Ghidorah's DNA into the formula, hoping that the modified Destroyer can now target Ghidorah's cells whereas the original had no effect on his alien biochemistry.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Madison Russell, unlike her living canon counterpart, dies during King Ghidorah's incursion in Boston. After she's drawn Ghidorah to the city using the Orca, the three-headed dragon roots her out of the Fenway Park stadium and blasts her with his gravity beams before Godzilla has arrived.
    • Behemoth, a particularly benevolent Titan, dies where his canon counterpart did not. In the wake of King Ghidorah's second victory against Godzilla, Behemoth, disgusted by the malevolent new alpha's commands to destroy everything, challenges him, only to end up getting immolated and dismembered.
    • Godzilla whose canon counterpart is still alive dies fighting one more time to stop Ghidorah.
  • Evil Is Burning Hot: Crimson Ghidorah, biologically integrated with the thermonuclear radiation that he sucked out of Godzilla, emits extreme heat around himself. When Kong hurls a piece of urban rubble towards him as a projectile, it melts in mid-air before making contact.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Monarch and the remaining U.S. military, desperate to halt Ghidorah's world-destroying reign after Godzilla fails to defeat him, resort to attempting to reverse-engineer the Oxygen Destroyer in the hopes they can modify it to affect Ghidorah's alien cells. They also take Kong off of Skull Island, intending for him to fight Ghidorah while the latter is weakened.
  • Humongous Mecha: Kiryu a.k.a. Project Iron Phoenix is a giant, cybernetic superweapon in the shape of a Titanus Gojira Titan, constructed by Monarch. Built in secret around the long-dead Gojira specimen Dagon's bones over the years since the battle of San Francisco, Kiryu's purpose is to act as an emergency Titan deterrent. Monarch deploys Kiryu into the battle among Godzilla, Kong and Crimson Ghidorah to try and tip the scales in humanity's favour.
  • Mistaken for Quake: Monarch initially mistakes the global seismic disturbances which occur following King Ghidorah's roar at Isla de Mara for earthquakes before they realise it's actually the Titans around the world, awakening and emerging to answer Ghidorah's call to arms.
  • No-Sell: Crimson Ghidorah, notably stronger than in his original form, tanks Supercharged Godzilla's first thermonuclear pulse point-blank without injury.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Mark and Emma Russell, unlike their canon counterparts, outlive their second child Madison. After Madison is killed by King Ghidorah at Fenway Park, Mark and Emma arrive in Boston searching for her and the Orca, continuing to scour the ruins for their daughter throughout Godzilla and Ghidorah's battle, unaware that they will never find her.
  • Power Levels: The perpetual storm encircling Skull Island is much stronger than the global hurricanes being caused by Ghidorah's activity are, which means aircraft have much more difficulty flying through the former than the latter.
  • Power-Up Full Color Change: King Ghidorah, by absorbing all the thermonuclear power that was inside Godzilla after Mothra sacrificed herself, transforms into an even more powerful state called Crimson Ghidorah with his scales and lightning permanently changing colour from yellow to red. Crimson Ghidorah is physically even stronger relative to other Titans than his normal form, he emits searing heat which can burn and melt things near-instantly, his gravity beam breath has some gravitokinetic capabilities, and his regeneration is further accelerated.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Emma and Mark Russell are searching in Boston for their daughter Madison while King Ghidorah is devouring Godzilla's radiation, unaware that Madison is dead because Ghidorah disintegrated her, and they aren't mentioned again afterwards; leaving their fates unknown after Ghidorah has defeated Godzilla, metamorphosed into Crimson Ghidorah, and secured his dominion over the other Titans that have converged on the city.
  • What If?: King Ghidorah succeeds in killing Madison Russell at Boston and he sucks Mothra's radiation out of Godzilla. The latter makes Ghidorah even more powerful than before and takes Godzilla down. Ghidorah continues reigning over the Titans and reshaping the world with extinction-threatening chaos, while Monarch are forced to turn to more desperate measures to try and halt Ghidorah's reign of destruction.
