- Been There, Shaped History: Derpy was the one who delivered the book The Elements of Harmony: A Reference Guide to Twilight's library, setting up the events of "Elements of Harmony". She got her cutie mark by playing with the bubble wrap it came in.
- Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Octavia plays the opening notes of the show's theme song on her cello.
- Dreadful Musician: Derpy's attempt to play Octavia's cello doesn't go very well, producing terrible screeching noises and burying Octavia in a pile of jagged music notes.
- Failure Montage: Derpy tries doing many things to get her cutie mark, including baking, window cleaning, gardening, painting, and cello playing.
- Idea Bulb: At the beginning of the short, Derpy gets one when she sees Carrot Top's cutie mark and thinks about getting one of her own.
- Impatience Makes You Dumb: Derpy tries a variety of activities in an attempt to get her cutie mark, including gardening. She plants a seed and shakes some plant food onto it. That only produces a little sprout, so she shakes a large amount of plant food onto it, which causes it to grow into a huge, menacing Piranha Plant about to eat her.
- The Klutz: While washing a window, Derpy falls backwards off the board she's sitting on, with her reflection staying in place due to Rule of Funny. Thankfully, she is a pegasus, so she just flies back up.
- Lethal Chef: While attempting to bake muffins, Derpy reaches for the wrong glass of liquid and pours it in the batter, which causes the whole thing to blow up.
- Mime and Music-Only Cartoon: No dialogue, just a cheery acoustic guitar instrumental that accompanies Derpy trying a long montage of activities attempting to find her cutie mark. However, there are a few vocal effects such as the Piranha Plant roaring at Derpy and Princess Luna going "wheeeeeeee!" as she bounces off the moon.
- Mind Screw: Derpy paints a picture of a muffin and hangs it on the wall. Then she suddenly has a real muffin in her hooves, and the canvas is blank.
- Shout-Out: Derpy tries gardening and grows a Piranha Plant from Super Mario Bros.. There's also a Fire Flower in the background.
- Tally Marks on the Prison Wall: Princess Luna has drawn many tally marks on the moon's surface keeping track of how long she has been banished there.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Derpy and muffins, of course. She is eating one at the beginning of the short, and while trying to get her cutie mark, she tries baking muffins and painting a picture of a muffin.
- You Were Trying Too Hard: Derpy tries doing many different things to get her cutie mark and fails at all of them. She only gets it after happily playing with the bubble wrap that was used to wrap Twilight's book about the Elements of Harmony.
