Vs Rewrite (Video Game)
Be not afraid, it's all okay! Let's play a game for old time's sake!

Developed by SpringlessEcho, VS Rewrite (also dubbed VS Sonic) is a mod serving as a crossover between Friday Night Funkin' and Sonic.EXE, featuring a unique take on the character known as Rewrite.

Rewrite has since gained their own ongoing web video series documenting an in-depth look at their game and the horrors that lurk within, with the plot being for "SONIC" to throw a party with their "friends" after the latest adventure had come to a close.

The mod's official Round 2 update can be found here.

    Video Series

This mod and series contain the following tropes:

    Tropes common in both mediums
  • Adaptation Name Change: The trio of victims/vessels used in Rewrite's game all undergo different names; Tails is dubbed "Miles", Knuckles is called "Ekiduna", and Robotnik is named "IV0".
  • Butt-Monkey: Miles. Even besides the deaths his vessel suffers, he can't even have a normal day without "Sonic" and the others picking on and pranking him (such as stealing his picnic away).
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: Rewrite's voice is a high, childlike text-to-speech voice, which adds to their unsettling demeanor.
  • Fun with Acronyms: "IV0" is short for "Index Vessel 0".
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: The main lore is that Rewrite is the original Sonic.exe that became more self-aware than before, rewriting the game with every playthrough and adapting to the player's mind. In his backstory, the game that was meant to be a means of communicating with Christ Almighty led to multiple people being influenced to take their lives, and the priest who made the game and tried to investigate the happenings got himself killed by the being claiming to be God.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Rewrite has a big grin on their face almost the entire time, save for when they go to "kill off" Boyfriend and in their original idle animation during the 2D section in the mod.
  • Politically Correct Villain: Rewrite is stated to approve of trans rights.
  • Stylistic Suck: Downplayed, but subtly present. Overall, the mod and series like to give off the initial impression of being yet another cheesy Sonic.exe spinoff that tries to be scary but is too simple and cliché to inspire any fear; Springless has indicated this is intentional when replying to a comment on YouTube.
    • Rewrite's appearance is uncanny, but otherwise they look almost entirely like a normal Sonic, and their rubber hose animations and melodic voice can make them seem more laughable than threatening.
    • "Thriller Gen"'s plodding, goofy horn synth helps the above, making it hard to take Rewrite seriously as a villain.
    • The "I AM GOD" quote-drop in "Thriller Gen" is also spoken in such a robotic monotone that it's hard to take seriously, and the fact that it gets dropped at all comes off as an overplayed cliché.
    • Trinity primarily features fan favorites Majin, 2011 X and Lord X, with Rewrite nowhere to be seen at first, as though pandering to the audience with known characters.
    • Of course, in reality, Rewrite's whole shtick is their meta-awareness; by acting like they're trying to be scary and failing, they lull the player into a false sense of security to keep them playing. Once he's got the player's soul in reach, the Cliché Storm stops being funny.
  • Unlicensed Game: As with the original Sonic.exe, though rather than the game looking like a deranged ROM hack, Rewrite's world is more like a bizarre Japanese bootleg.
  • You Don't Look Like You:
    • Tails, as Miles, now sports more reddish fur and blue (previously yellow) shoes instead of his iconic orange fur and red shoes. He also lacks the iconic twin tails that lend him his nickname; instead only having one.
    • Knuckles, as Ekiduna, for his part, is shown wearing a lot of green clothes like a green hat and cape. He also sports yellow fingered gloves instead of his usual ones, meaning that he, like Miles, lacks a defining characteristic: specifically, his spiked knuckles.
    • Robotnik, as IV0, looks even more different from his normal self, having dull skin, an eye-shaped body with his head attached in the middle, a black cape hanging from the top of the body, and his arms attached by a pair of bolts on the shoulder joints.

    Tropes exclusive to the mod
  • A God Am I: Rewrite proclaims the iconic "I AM GOD" line at one point in both songs, with the line in "Trinity" being complimented with "AND YOU'RE NOBODY".
  • All Just a Dream: The events of "Thriller Gen Encore" turn out to be this for Boyfriend, who hasn't fully started playing Rewrite's game at that point. Come "Trinity Encore", however, and his involvement in things is anything but a dream.
  • Anti-Frustration Feature: Checkpoints are placed in spots during "Trinity Encore" to ensure you don't have to play the song from the beginning if you get a Game Over at any point. Once you retry, you'll pick up from the start of a set section following the title cardnote .
  • Art Shift: In contrast to base FNF, the whole mod, aside from the RodentRap section against the disguised 2011 X and the pixel section at the end of "Trinity Legacy", is in a 3D art style mixed with the SEGA Genesis's colour palette limits.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Where to start?:
  • Breather Episode: "Thriller Gen", even with its more difficult charting near the end, is fairly easy to get through compared to "Trinity", due to its slower pace overall.
  • Downer Ending: Boyfriend is ultimately revealed to be nothing more than a disguise by Rewrite to lure in the player, and the post-credits scene of the Round 2 update confirms that you're now stuck in Rewrite's world, embodying a new vessel of your own, with Rewrite saying a monologue as you and them look out over the stormy landscape before you.
  • Face of a Thug: Maigo may look creepy, but during your time in the Gallery, he remains nothing short of friendly towards the player.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: After disposing of his Boyfriend disguise, Rewrite takes the rest of "Trinity" against you, the player, aiming to claim your soul and add it to their growing collection. In the Round 2 update, they even go as far as to shift the song onto the desktop to further accent that it's personal.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Amongst the images shown right before the homestretch of "Trinity Encore", the silhouette of Rephrase (a D-Sides counterpart of Rewrite) can be briefly seen, along with silhouettes of forms based on other video games (like Super Mario Bros. and Crash Bandicoot).
  • Fusion Dance: Whether willing or not is up to speculation, but at a couple of points during "Trinity", Majin and Sonic.EXE end up fusing into one body, having to share those portions of the song with each other. It may also be down to Rewrite's shapeshifting either going a bit awry, or he did it on purpose.
  • Game-Over Man: Get a Game Over at most points in "Thriller Gen Encore" and "Trinity Encore", and the different opponents will say different dialogue at your expense.
  • Interface Screw:
    • For one, the arrows in both songs are replaced with coloured rings, so it's down to the player to remember which one corresponds to which key. And worse, the HP bar is out for "Trinity Legacy", so you don't know how far away you are from losing. This has been partially averted in the "Round 2" update, to now where the health is visiblenote , and Round 2's versions of the songs go back to using the traditional FNF arrows. Despite this, the Legacy tracks retain the coloured ring notes.
    • Played straight during the climax of "Thriller Gen Encore", where the window shakes erratically and occasionally shifts around your screen whenever Rewrite hits notes.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: During the homestretch of "Trinity Legacy", one of Rewrite's lyrics are that "This cliché never dies", hinting that they're aware of how the infamous creepypasta is still going strong after over 10 years, as well as the fact that they are another of several mods based on Sonic.exe (possibly even horror in general on top of that).
  • Marathon Level: "Trinity Legacy" delivers this in spades, throwing in around 6 minutes of challenge to the table. "Trinity Encore" manages to top this at just over 8 minutes.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules: Rewrite demonstrates this in full force by actually breaking free from the position they're meant to be in during "Trinity" before going in for the "kill" against Boyfriend.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: When Boyfriend gets a Game Over, he gets turned into a red ring, his soul being imprisoned within. Come the homestretch of "Trinity", however, and we don't even know what happens to Boyfriend after Rewrite attacks him. Could he have been killed on the spot, or worse? Round 2 gets rid of this ambiguity, Boyfriend getting killed by Rewrite's arm tearing his heart out and his body left as a blank vessel, more than likely for the player. However, considering the Boyfriend we play as is just another disguise of Rewrite's to fool the player, it's far more scary that Rewrite's simulating what he's going to do to the player he successfully baited in.
  • Stealth Sequel: In the climax of the Round 2 version of Trinity, Rewrite directly says you're always "hungry for more, that's why this is Round 2!" Although Round 2 is advertised as a remake, Rewrite (and you) still remember the original.
  • Press X to Not Die: Wait long enough on the normal Game Over screen, and a timer will begin ticking down accompnied by the drowning theme. Don't continue before it hits 0, and Rewrite will spindash right through Boyfriend and shred him apart, ending your run on a "DEFEAT".
  • Promoted to Playable: In the homestretch of both versions of "Trinity", it's the player themselves that go up against Rewrite.
  • Wolfpack Boss: "Trinity" serves as this, with the player pit against the original Vs. Sonic.Exe trio before facing Rewrite. Then it's revealed they were never there to begin with.

    Tropes exclusive to the videos
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Miles gets one after Rewrite/SONIC attacks him, being knocked into the river and drowning before his soul becomes a red ring.
  • Fights Like a Normal: A mostly non-combative variant. When it comes time to chase after Miles in the obligatory hide-and-seek level, Rewrite doesn't use any supernatural powers to get to him, and instead catches him by means of a speedrunning trick that a real player could've easily pulled off with prior knowledge.
  • Swapped Roles: A unique one, in that this time, you are playing as the killer, and the characters are trying to escape from you and "SONIC" trying to get them.
