Wolfenstein 3D
The grandfather of the first-person shooter genre, Wolfenstein 3D was released by id Software for DOS computers in 1992. Players control American spy B.J. Blazkowicz as he escapes from a Nazi stronghold in the midst of World War II. Wolfenstein 3D is renowned not only for reviving an obscure IP, but also for innovating on the shooter genre with a 3D graphics engine (courtesy of legendary designer John Carmack) and precise gunplay. These elements would go on to inspire practically every subsequent FPS game, including id Software's own Doom and Quake series.
