Basic Trope: A person or organisation, becoming more and more cynical over time, explicitly defies an order or request that would take them over the Moral Event Horizon or would be considered Dirty Business even by their standards.
- Straight: Reconciliation Co, an organisation centred around taming immortal evil entities so that they can integrate into society, attempt to brainwash an official into giving them more funding to do their job, prompting defiance from one of their employees, Bob.
- Exaggerated: Reconciliation Co wants to brainwash the common folk into accepting these entities in their midst. A small handful of employees who had tacitly accepted all previous projects are enraged and revolt violently.
- Downplayed: Bob secretly objects to brainwashing the official and chooses to threaten them rather than do so.
- Justified:
- Everyone Has Standards — even the most loyal minion will eventually find a line they can't cross.
- Bob's sister was brainwashed, and he refuses to ever do so.
- Inverted: Against orders, Bob has a Moment of Weakness in which he chooses to brainwash an official. This puts him on a darker path.
- Subverted: Reconciliation Co says they will be brainwashing an official. Bob stands against this. In reality, the company was trying to gauge how loyal its employees are, and the official was never in any danger.
- Double Subverted: After discovering Bob's disloyalty from this scheme, Reconciliation Co. tries to brainwash Bob, and Alice stands against this.
- Parodied: ???
- Zig Zagged: ???
- Averted: Bob keeps quiet during the brainwashing.
- No brainwashing is done.
- Lampshaded: "So killing people is fine, but you draw the line at brainwashing?"
- Invoked: "Do you remember our first job? When we turned Revenant Duskthorn into a charity worker? I think it's time we reverted."
- Exploited: After Bob's refusal, an opposing organization to Reconciliation Co. offers to recruit him.
- Defied: Bob's superiors threaten his family if he doesn't follow orders.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
- Played For Drama: Bob is charged with insubordination for protesting the brainwashing.
- Implied: Bob mysteriously pulled off a Heel–Face Turn prior to the events of the series, and seems particularly disgusted by the brainwashing done by Reconciliation Co.
