Grottomatic is a one-member nerd band consisting exclusively of Tim Stevens. He writes lyrics, composes music, plays keyboards, provides lead and backing vocals, and even enters all MIDI programming. He has been musically active since 2008. He specializes in “nerd music,” drawing influences from acts such as They Might Be Giants, Jonathan Coulton, Flight of the Conchords, and Logan Whitehurst & The Junior Science Club. While most of his works are original, he occasionally dabbles in popular song parodies.
The band’s studio album discography is as follows:
Grottomatic provides examples of:
- Album Title Drop: Tornado of Squee gets its name from a line in “A Mouse for a Day,” and Hey Blondie, How’s It Going? is a spoken line that begins “Stretch Sumo Angel.”
- American Kirby Is Hardcore: In “Omnivore,”
written about Kirby, there is contrast between descriptions of Kirby in Japan and the USA, and the music changes to match.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: “Bad Decisions”
- Bookends: Hey Blondie, How’s It Going? on Band Camp and on the CD.
- Brick Joke: “Get Me Outta Charlotte”
mentions a visit to Cinnabon.
- Charity Motivation Song: Well, sort of. “The Tribute”
was written to draw attention to Wander over Yonder and mentions repeatedly that it was unjustly cancelled and deserves a third season.
- Disability Super Power
- Happy Place: “Get Me Outta Charlotte”
- "I Am" Song: Literally titled “I Am.”
- I Am the Band: Tim Stevens does everything.
- Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: “Stretchy Sumo Angel”
- Once an Episode: Every album contains a reference to bees, at least one song in a meter other than 4/4, a parody of some other work, and a Brony song.
- Shaped Like Itself: Time is dragging on in “Get Me Outta Charlotte.”
- Take That!: Tim had been overexposed to the Whitney Houston hit “Saving All My Love for You”
and had wanted to write a parody of it for quite some time. He started watching Doctor Who, and the result was this.
- Uncommon Time: “Bad Decisions”
is in 5/4.
