One of the age ratings of the Motion Picture Association. This rating is aimed at people who are at least seventeen years old. Children under seventeen are not allowed to be admitted into R rated films unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian, hence the name "Restricted".

It's the highest rating a film can go while still being shown at normal multiplex theaters, as most theater chains and theaters refuse to screen NC-17 movies. It is the film equivalent of the Entertainment Software Rating Board's Mature Rating.

Most films produced by Searchlight Pictures have received this rating. The very first Disney film to receive an R rating was Down and Out in Beverly Hills. The first 2D computer-animated film to get an R rating is South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, and the first 3D computer-animated film to get an R rating is Sausage Party. America: The Motion Picture is the first animated film by Netflix to receive an R rating by the MPA.

Fun Fact: On the fiftieth anniversary of the MPAA, they revealed that more than half of all movies that were submitted to them were Rated R.
