Terrified Transformation Witness (trope)
The original Animorph got a lukewarm reception at best.

Her transfiguration into the Queen of Bees would be the sort of thing you'd recount grandly to your peers' applause and wonderment, if only you could speak of it without shrieking. If you persisted with the foolhardy attempt, it's possible that during your gasping sobs you may manage to share some of the awful details. It is unlikely anyone listening would thank you.

When it comes to shapeshifting (be it voluntary or forced) regardless of whether the character transforms in front of a witness or is only found to have transformed after the fact, the most common reaction of the audience is one of immediate shock—at best. At worst, fear, terror, paranoia, and even violence may result.

In more comedic works, emphasis is placed on the witness's shock, often deliberately exaggerated for comic effect. In the cases where the transition itself is observed, expect hysterical screaming and attempts to flee the area, even if the transformation is completely bereft of Transformation Horror. In the case of witnesses who only discover the aftermath, expect a lot of denials, lingering cases of mistaken identity, and more screaming, even if the new form is harmless; a Reactive Continuous Scream may ensue if the shapeshifter is startled by the witness in turn.

Conversely, in more dramatic works, the shock may be prompted by the transformation being genuinely terrifying to behold, to the point that a Transformation Discretion Shot may be employed to emphasize the observer's horror via Reaction Shot. Reactions to the discovery of said new form will feature shock, grief, and much less amusing denials, especially in the case of discovering that a monster Was Once a Man. Even if the new form isn't terrifying or dangerous in some way, this may be followed by a long period of adjustment and lingering fear that might even give way to paranoia, distrust, or even outright rejection of the transformed, especially in more pessimistic tales.

However, bear in mind that there has to be at least some awareness that a transformation has taken place, even if it's immediately squished by denial, so characters being afraid of a werewolf or whatever without recognizing who it was are out of bounds.

May overlap with the Shapeshifter Showoff Session, with fear being the intended response.

Compare Bemoaning the New Body, in which it's the victim of a transformation who's shocked and upset.

  • Fantastic Four: When Ben takes a potion that's been made up by the Future Foundation kids, Johnny's initial reaction is to troll him by claiming it's made him even more unsightly than before. Eventually, he has to demorph... only to be caught in the act by Sara, who panics and fatally stomps him flat. • Elementals of Harmony: "Up and Down, Over and Through" describes the act of observing Twilight Sparkle's transformation into an Æthertwisted version of herself as traumatic:
Seeing one of their best friends twisted into a surreal parody of herself was traumatic enough
  • Medicated: While the potions that transform the girls into amphibians are quick and painless, the process of them turning back into humans is horrifying and painful at first. The first time Anne's potion completely wears off, both the frog villagers and the toad tax collectors are horrified to see a teenage girl transform into a monster twice their height with forward-facing, predator eyes. When Marcy's potion wears off for the first time, the newts in the library see her as a malformed monster trying to imitate a newt.
  • A lighthearted example in a tale of 2 Pikachus. A male and female Pikachu are hanging out together when they find a Thunder Stone. The female hides from it while the male curiously investigates it. When the stone causes him to evolve into a Raichu, she covers her face with her paws, lowers her ears, and hides in terror. She quickly gets over her fear, though, and the comic ends with the two of them happily playing together, just like before.

  • AKIRA: Kaneda, Kaori, and Colonel Shikishima are left gaping in silent horror as Tetsuo's volatile Esper powers finally overwhelm him and transform him into a giant mound of undulating flesh. Unfortunately for all parties involved, the shock allows Tetsuo's uncontrollable growth to get a headstart on trying to consume them.
  • Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman: Simon reacts in terror when he sees that Theodore has become a bloodthirsty werewolf. Meanwhile, Dave has the same reaction when Lawrence Talbot turns into the titular Wolf Man.
  • Beauty and the Beast (1991): When the Enchantress's curse is lifted and the Beast is transformed back into a human, Belle watches the whole scene with a stunned look on her face, clearly trying to piece together what is going on. For good measure, Belle recoils a bit in fear when she tries to approach him at first.
  • Brave: When the witch's magic cake begins to transform Queen Elinor into a bear, Merida is left staring in shock.
  • Coraline: When the Other Mother finally reveals her true colours to Coraline in her refusal to let her leave the Other World, she begins to revert to her true form, growing taller, skinnier, and progressively more monstrous, to the point that she no longer resembles a human being anymore. Coraline, who was defiantly arguing with her a moment ago, immediately looks scared and begins edging away from her.
  • The Curse of the Were-Rabbit:
    • Used as a Red Herring early on, with a shot of the other rabbits huddled in fear as ominous bangs and rattles come from Hutch's cage, ending with a shot of the cage door flying off. You're led to believe they're watching Hutch turn into the Were-Rabbit, but it's later revealed Hutch was actually turning into a rabbit version of Wallace.
    • The Were-Rabbit's first on-screen transformation happens right in front of Victor Quatermaine, who goes from his usual smug, violent self to a trembling wreck in a matter of seconds. His dog Philip, who a moment before had been growling at Gromit, is likewise reduced to scratching at the door of Gromit's van, begging to be let in. Once the initial shock wears off, however, Victor's expression turns into a terrifying Slasher Smile as he realises he can kill the Were-Rabbit and Murder the Hypotenuse all in one go.
  • A Goofy Movie: In the opening dream sequence, this is played for both laughs and dramatic effect where Roxanne is merely surprised at first but begins crawling away in terror as Max turns into a towering version of his father.
  • The Last Unicorn: When Schmendrick the Magician turns the unicorn into a human woman, Molly Grue is horrified: Molly had dreamed all her life about meeting a unicorn and finally does so as a middle-aged woman lumbered with trauma from her own life as a human, so views this change as a downgrade. The formerly immortal unicorn-turned-human panicking about being able to feel "this body dying all around [her]" and confusion over human emotions only reinforces Molly's horror.
  • The Little Mermaid (1989):
    • Sebastian and Flounder are present when Ursula transforms Ariel from mermaid to human. Sebastian looks on in terror, and Flounder shields his eyes with his fins, both Quaking with Fear as Ariel's tail is ripped apart and remolded into legs with magic.
    • Later in the film, when Ursula sheds her human disguise at the wedding, the congregation all recoil in horror at the sight of Ursula's true Octopus-Merwoman form bursting out from under "Vanessa's" skin.
    • When King Triton agrees to take Ariel's place as one of the many polyps in Ursula's garden in exchange for her freedom, Ariel is left watching helplessly as Ursula reduces him to a polyp.

  • Monsters vs. Aliens: When Susan grows into a 49.5-foot giant at her wedding, the guests look on in horror and most try to flee the church, especially when Susan grows through the roof and begins collapsing the building; the priest is so panicked at the sight that he jumps through a stained-glass window to escape.
  • NIMONA (2023):
    • When Nimona shapeshifts on camera for the first time in order to save Ballister, she first gets him to promise not to freak out, then transforms into a rhinoceros while Ballister is still irritably making his promises, prompting a horror-stricken reaction shot of his face as he trails off. Once they've escaped, he spends most of his next scene extremely wary around Nimona, triggering their next argument.
    • For most of the film, the Institute doesn't really get that Nimona is a shapeshifter. As such, when Ballister finally stops holding back and gives Nimona permission to "break stuff", Nimona's transformation into a gorilla leaves the surrounding Institute knights plus Ambrosius and the Director so shell-shocked that it takes them several seconds to remember to go on the attack, by which time Nimona and Ballister are ready for them.
    • In the climactic flashback it turns out that Nimona befriended the legendary hero Gloreth when she was a child. One day, Nimona transforms into a bird to get an apple out of a tree, leaving Gloreth shocked and alarmed by the sight. However, she recovers fairly quickly, and soon gets into the habit of playing with Nimona while she's in various other forms.
    • Played for drama later in the same flashback: Nimona is playing with young Gloreth while in the form of a bear, only for Gloreth's parents to snatch her away in a panic. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Nimona shapeshifts into her little girl form, only for the entire village to react with open terror and hatred, going so far as to form an angry mob in an attempt to kill her.
  • Paprika: In the finale of the anime adaptation, the sight of Chiba/Paprika reborn as a giant baby leaves Dr. Shima and Detective Konakawa staring in astonishment; they're even more amazed when Chiba begins to grow up as she eats more of the nightmare plaguing the city, until she finally devours the Chairman alive, maturing into a fully-grown dream goddess in the process. Shima and Konakawa are left standing in silence, gaping up at the aftermath of the transformation in utter disbelief.
  • Pinocchio (1940): Pinocchio can only watch in silent horror when he sees his friend Lampwick turning into a donkey, not helped by Lampwick's own terror. This ultimately saves Pinocchio's own life, as seeing it happen prevents Pinocchio from enjoying any more of Pleasure Island's amusements—the cause of the transformations—and he manages to escape while only partially transformed.
  • The Princess and the Frog: At the end of the song "Friends On The Other Side", Dr. Facilier transforms Prince Naveen into a frog; despite just having sold Naveen out, his butler Lawrence stares in horror as the transformation plays out.
  • Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island:
    • This was Fred, Daphne, Velma and Beau's reaction when Simone and Lena altered their faces to be more cat-like after the two revealed that they were two-hundred-year-old werecats.
    • This would happen again with Shaggy and Scooby twice when they witness the ferry driver Jacques transform into his werecat form, and then seeing Simone and Lena fully transform into werecats at the climax.
  • Shrek 1: In the climax, Shrek crashes Fiona's wedding to Farquaad and delays proceedings just long enough for the sun to set, causing Fiona's curse to kick in and turn her into an ogre. Farquaad, who knew nothing about the curse, recoils in disgust and orders his guards to arrest Fiona and lock her back in the tower. Thankfully, Donkey and the dragon arrive on the scene immediately afterwards.
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: When the Evil Queen turns herself into an elderly peddler to deliver the poison apple to Snow White, her pet raven is so frightened by the sight that he hides inside the human skull decorating the Queen's lair.
  • The Transformers: The Movie: Galvatron is dutifully shocked upon witnessing Unicron transform from a monster planet to a truly Humongous Mecha.
  • Turning Red:
    • When Ming sees Mei transform for the first time, her reaction is shock and dismay—not because it happened, but because it happened before she expected it.
    • When Mei's friends first see her in her red panda form, their first reaction is to scream in terror.
    • After Mei runs off from the red moon ritual and Ming's amulet breaks, the rest of the family is horrified as they watch Ming's red panda spirit enter her body and transform her into her kaiju-sized red panda form.
  • We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story: Professor Screweyes uses his brain drain pills on Louie and Cecilia to devolve the kids from humans into monkeys, with the dinosaurs watching in horror at the sight (though the only thing the audience sees of this are the shadows cast on Rex's underbelly). The sight of this convinces the dinosaurs to make a deal with Screweyes to revert the children back to normal, at the cost of all four of them becoming savage beasts again.

    Films — Live-Action
  • The Avengers (2012): The normally reserved Black Widow is left with a look of pure fear on her face as Bruce Banner begins to transform into the Incredible Hulk in front of her. Quite apart from the visually disturbing nature of the transformation, the Hulk is extremely dangerous and not on the Avengers' side at present, so Fear Is the Appropriate Response.
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Violet's mother watches agape in horror as Violet swells and balloons into a giant blueberry. The other tourgoers can only back away slowly; meanwhile, Wonka is cowering on the floor, at one point fearfully peeking up, only to make a disgusted expression and slowly sink back down.
  • The Fly (1958): In one of the film's most iconic scenes, Hélène removes Andre's hood to discover that his teleportation experiment has left him with the head and arm of a fly, prompting her to scream in terror—and a cut to Andre's POV shows the same scream playing out several dozen times simultaneously through his compound eyes.
  • The Fly (1986):
    • Veronica has to witness a different stage of Seth's gradual metamorphosis into a fly-human hybrid with every visit, going from merely shocked and pitying to openly horrified; by the end, Seth is almost unrecognizable as his former self, and Veronica can barely speak to him without breaking down in tears though the fact that she's pregnant with his child doesn't help.
    • In the finale, a delusional Seth tries to get Veronica to merge with him via the teleporter so that he can regain his humanity; while attempting to push him away, Veronica accidentally tears off Seth's decomposing jaw, triggering a Body Horror-iffic transformation into his final form, a disgusting fleshy bipedal insect with no trace of humanity left. For every single second of this, Veronica is screaming in terror, grief, and revulsion at the sight.
  • Run Sweetheart Run: At a church, the Big Bad hunting down Cherie changes from human to his true self. The transformation itself happens offscreen, but the inhuman growling and Cherie's terror make it clear that it is monstrous.
  • Space Jam: When the Nerdlucks infuse themselves with the talent taken from the A-list NBA players, they're immediately transformed from diminutive hamster-like aliens into towering behemoths. The Looney Tunes, all of whom were convinced that the Nerdlucks were going to be pushovers in the inevitable basketball game, are left awestruck and shivering at the sight.
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day: In the climax, the T-1000 commandeers a helicopter by headbutting a hole in the canopy, reverting to liquid form and pouring itself into the cockpit, then reforming on the seat right next to the pilot. Said pilot is left staring in mute terror as the liquid metal takes shape next to him, and when the T-1000 orders him to "Get Out!", he immediately obeys by flinging himself to his death.
  • Van Helsing:
    • Shortly after reuniting with her thought-to-be-dead brother Velkan, Anna Valerious finds herself watching in anguish and horror as he pulls himself halfway up a wall, tears off his skin and becomes a werewolf.
    • During the final battle, Dracula is caught off-guard when the full moon rises and Van Helsing is transformed into a werewolf, courtesy of the bite he got from Velkan earlier in the film... and worse still, a werewolf bite is Dracula's one weakness. Dracula's response to the transformation is a horrorstruck Villainous Breakdown that puts him on the backfoot for the first time in the entire film.
  • Werewolf by Night (2022): At the climax of the film, Elsa Bloodstone is trapped in a cage with Jack Russell, who is forced to transform into his werewolf form by the Bloodstone. The werewolf transformation isn't directly seen, as only Elsa's terrified expression is shown as it happens in front of her.

    Literature
  • Animorphs: Morphing rarely looks pleasant unless you're an estreen like Cassie and never happens the same way twice, so the results are invariably horrifying to the observers, even if they’ve seen morphing before. In two memorable instances, both Marco and David find their finger bones slipping out of their skin while morphing birds of prey, much to the revulsion of the onlookers. However, the morphs that elicit the most disgust and horror from witnesses are those of arthropods like spiders and insects: the first time the team morph into flies, Rachel has to run out and vomit after seeing Cassie go first.
  • Discworld: Angua the werewolf forbids people from watching her change shape for this reason; she looks great as both a human and a wolf, but the intermediate forms are apparently horrifying. When Gaspode accidentally catches a glimpse of the process in one book, the usually deadpan talking dog cringes away, whimpering.
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: Although Edmund knows about the White Witch's habit of turning people into stone, he is left shocked when he sees her wantonly do this to a party of animals enjoying a Christmas party; he contemplates them sitting there for months in their stone form until the moss grows on them and their faces crumble away, and this is a turning point for him, as he sees the evil he has sided with.
  • In "The Man Who Evolved", a scientist is demonstrating how the evolution-accelerating device he made works, with himself as the test subject. By the time he finishes, one of the friends he demonstrates to is raving mad and sets fire to the house, and the second just barely remains sane by focusing on the fire and the need to drag the madman out.
  • Spice and Wolf: Holo transforms into her wolf form to prove to Lawrence she is the Wise Wolf God. He ends up being traumatized by the experience.
  • The Springstorm Alpha: Matt is absolutely terrified the first time he sees Nick transform, partly because he didn't previously believe the supernatural was real, and partly because he's afraid this wolf might mean him harm.
  • The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: Dr. Lanyon reluctantly helps assemble a potion for Mr. Hyde and is terrified when it turns him back into Henry Jekyll. The shock shatters Lanyon mentally and physically, leading to his decline and death.
  • The Witches:
    • After being transformed into a mouse, the protagonist heads back to his grandmother's room for help. Though she knows all about Witches and the transformations they inflict on their victims, she's utterly shell-shocked by the sight of her grandson as a mouse and needs a moment to recover from the discovery—and the realization that she's now sharing a hotel with hundreds of Witches plus the Grand High Witch herself doesn't help.
    • Although the English parents react with shock and horror to their children being transformed, this is averted with the Norwegians, who know all about witches and are used to their presence, to the point that the hero is surprised to learn about the lack of reaction to children who were transformed in his grandmother's stories. It is even lampshaded by the grandmother when she calmly tells Mr Jenkins that she understands his anger, but those in Norway are used to this kind of thing.
    • In the climax, the entire dining room witnesses the visiting Witches suddenly turning into mice. The adults are horrified, and only the children seem to be really enjoying it. The adults are then intent on destroying the mice, almost leaving no space for the curiosity of why the witches turned into mice in the first place.
    • Shortly afterwards, the transformed Bruno Jenkins is returned to his parents, who are even more horrified: his father is merely dumbfounded, while his mother (who hates mice) screams in terror at the sight of him. The protagonist and his grandmother later speculate that the couple could end up so deep in denial that they might just drown Bruno in a fire bucket rather than acknowledge the truth.

  • This can sometimes happen on Doctor Who if the Doctor regenerates in front of someone. Watching your friend dying, then completely changing appearance, often coupled with post-regeneration delirium could throw anyone off their game. A notable example is when Eleven regenerates into Twelve and companion Clara mostly stands there wide-eyed and in shock, not helped by the Doctor's huge change in visible age, as well as him going on to spout non sequiturs and then asking her "Do you happen to know how to fly this thing?" as they stand in a crashing TARDIS.
  • Farscape: "DNA Mad Scientist", both Crichton and Pilot are aghast when Aeryn belatedly admits that she's begun turning into a Pilot, especially since she does so by revealing that she's already begun sprouting secondary limbs from her belly. Later, when Crichton arrives at Namtar's lab, the Mad Scientist gloatingly reveals that Aeryn's transformation is almost complete and she's barely recognizable; Crichton is horrified... and then furious with Namtar.
  • Fraggle Rock:
  • Grimm:
    • Generally speaking, the Wesen transformation or "Woge" can't be seen by ordinary people unless the Wesen actually wants them to or has lost all control. Even the nicest Wesen can induce brain-breaking levels of fear by Woging visibly, so Muggles are often left horror-stricken even if they aren't in immediate danger; many are deeply traumatized by the experience, and some may even Go Mad from the Revelation. Consequently, a rite of passage for Muggles who join Nick's team is to have Munroe deliberately Woge in front of them so that they can develop a tolerance for the effects.
    • Grimms like Nick are immune to the terror-inducing effect of seeing the Woge, given that they can also see through the Weirdness Censor that conceals Wesen during their private transformations. However, getting used to the latter ability is still pretty frightening for inexperienced Grimms: Nick panicked and tried to arrest Munroe when he first saw him Woging, while Trubel spent most of her life convinced that she was insane, as she didn't have a mentor to explain what she was seeing.
  • In From the Cold: When Jenny finally reveals her shapeshifting powers to her handlers by painfully reverting back to her true form in the second episode, Chris and Chauncey are left staring in horrified fascination—Chris because he honestly didn't know Jenny could shapeshift, Chauncey because he didn't realize just how unpleasant the process actually was.
  • The Outer Limits (1995): In the finale of "Last Supper", Dr Sinclair creates a youth serum from Jade's blood and uses it on himself right in front of his captives... only to find too late that it's a lot more powerful than he anticipated. Consequently, his hostages become the audience to Sinclair's agonizing regression to infancy: Frank and Danny can only stare in horror, while Carol is so frightened that she shuts her eyes to avoid seeing the final stages. Subverted in Jade's case: after averting her eyes for a second or two, she then looks on with cold satisfaction as Sinclair suffers a Death by De-aging and dissolves into preborn goo.
  • Wolf Like Me: In the second episode, Gary goes to Mary's house to ask for his keys back, but in the middle of their argument, she locks herself in her basement vault. Gary looks through the viewport and is visibly horrified by what he sees. In the following episode, it's revealed that she turned into a wolf and slaughtered two chickens and a goat.

    Tabletop Games
  • Golden Sky Stories: The Surprise rules dictate that ordinary NPCs react with surprise and shock if they witness a henge transform from their animal form to human or vice versa. The magnitude of this shock depends on the difference between the henge's eponymous attribute and the highest attribute of the NPC, and ranges from simply crying out to running away or even fainting (though if the difference is negative, i.e. the Henge attribute is lower, then the NPC's reaction is left up to the GM's discretion).
  • GURPS: Invoked in the gamebook Shapeshifters; one possible enhancement is "Horrifying Change," in which the character's shapeshifting features such a powerful dose of Transformation Horror that any witnesses immediately experience a Fright Check with -1 resistance for every level of the enhancement taken. For good measure, even family and friends can't get used to the sight.
  • World of Darkness:
    • Werewolf: The Apocalypse: Shapechangers (whether Werewolves or other Werecreatures), when turning into their War Forms, induce a terror into human minds called Delirium, which makes them forget and rationalize the experience if they survive the encounter. Notably, only normal people are really affected, with supernaturals (Vampires, Changelings, Wraiths, etc.) and extraordinary humans (Mages, Hunters) are either unaffected or only suffer a reduced Delirium that makes them go into a murder frenzy instead.
    • Werewolf: The Forsaken: Humans who see a werewolf in its hybrid form suffer a supernatural terror called Lunacy. The severity depends on their Willpower, but almost everyone is forced to flee in panic and forget the experience afterward, and the most Weak-Willed will take suicidal risks to escape.

    Video Games
  • ANNO: Mutationem: During a traversal through Hinterland after losing consciousness, Ann experiences a Pensieve Flashback where she sees the memory of when she tried to get Ryan out of a street gang before the other members retaliated by throwing a bottle at her. This caused Ann to transform into her Superpowered Evil Side, terrifying the gang members who call her a monster before she attacks everyone around her, including Ryan, and in the process slicing his eye.
  • Baldur's Gate III: After the Dark Urge earns their Slayer form by killing Isobel Thorm or becoming Bhaal's Chosen after killing Orin, transforming into the Slayer would cause one of their companions to react in absolute terror. The only exception to this case would be Minthara, who instead finds their monstrous form to be "exquisite".
  • Dead Rising 2: If Chuck fails to give Katey her daily injection of Zombrex in time, she will become a zombie. We do not get to see her transformation, but Stacey's reaction of abject horror (backing away with a hand over her mouth in devastation as Katey begs for help) says it all.
  • Diablo II: Marius witnesses the gathering of the Prime Evils in the Temple of Light. He's already scared out of his mind being so close to three of the most evil things in existence. Then he sees the Wanderer complete his transformation into Diablo which scares him so badly he refuses to enter the gate to Hell and shatter Baal's Soulstone.
Marius: What I saw then was not meant for mortal eyes...
  • Escape from Horrorland: Halfway through the game, you have to use the lab at Vampire Village to restore the transformed Lizzie to normal. It's very common to screw up and turn her into something worse, and Luke will usually make fun of her for it... up until you turn her into a Horror, leaving Luke genuinely terrified—to the point that he actually pinches her out of fear note . Lizzie is not amused.
  • Final Fantasy:
    • Final Fantasy IX: In Disc 3, Regent Cid sets out to find a cure for being transformed into an Oglop in the hopes of regaining his mind and being able to build the next great airship. Unfortunately, the cure only turns him into a frog instead; when he finally shows the results to the party, everyone reacts with immediate shock and dismay.
    • Final Fantasy XIV:
      • In Shadowbringers, Alisaie and the Warrior of Light are horrified when Tesleen is stabbed and irreversibly transformed into a monstrous sin eater before their eyes.
Alisaie: [sprinting to the scene, horrified] Oh no, no... No, no, no, no, no!
      • During the events of Endwalker, people are transformed into monstrous beasts whose very souls are decayed into nothingness when they succumb to despair. The process is so horrifying that it can cause a chain reaction of transformations as people watch their loved ones become terrifying monsters before their eyes.

    • When the party confronts the Sandoran commander Greham, they're left shocked and incredulous when he transforms into a Dragoon in front of them... all except Rose, who points out that only a Dragoon would be able to command the dragon Feyrbrand the way the Sandorans have.

  • The Shapeshifting Detective:
    • Should you opt to question Zak Weston in the form of Lexie, he'll get you to take part in a photoshoot, giving you a little Liquid Courage as the shoot turns risqué. Unfortunately, the drink's been spiked, causing you to lose control of your powers. You revert to your true form right in front of him—not "Sam", but the real you; as you black out, you hear Zak gagging in disgust and horror before you wake up in a cab. Attempting to return to the studio will result in a terrified Zak telling you to leave immediately.
    • Exploited in the finale: should you incorrectly identify the killer to the police before you go to bed, you're kidnapped by the real killer, tied to a chair, and doomed to become their next victim. One way of escaping is to frighten the killer into submission by shapeshifting into them: if it's Zak, the killer will faint in shock, while if it's Violet, the killer will suffer a nervous breakdown and commit suicide. Unfortunately, this tactic won't work if Rayne is the killer.
  • Sonic and the Secret Rings: The transformation of Erazor Djinn into Alf Layla wa-Layla at the very end of the game, which results in his body twisting and swelling into a grotesque mass of limbs, leaves the unflappable and confident Sonic feeling horrified and disturbed at the sight.
Sonic: This is awful. You're just some... incomplete monster...
  • Sunless Skies: In the finale of the Incognito Princess's personal quest, she is married to the King of Choirs, and if you go through with the ceremony, you get to witness your companion shedding her skin to become the Queen of Bees; the sight is so horrific that your Terror spikes dramatically, and depending on the response you choose, you can either observe with terrified obsession, maniacally cheer her on to the point of emotional collapse, or look away in horror. The fact that the Princess's flayed skin follows you back to your ship doesn't help.

This isn't out of disgust as Milo isn't human himself and is used to studying alongside all sorts of other species but he knows Doyle is suffering in forms he'll not be used to.
  • Gravity Falls:
    • "Into The Bunker":
      • After Wendy and Dipper belatedly realize that the "Author" is actually the Shapeshifter in disguise, and they attempt to leave as nonchalantly as possible... only for the Shapeshifter to turn his head a full 180 degrees to face them, clamber up the wall, sprout spider legs from his torso, and let out a bloodcurdling howl, prompting both Dipper and Wendy to scream in terror. And this is before he completes this little Shapeshifter Showoff Session by fully reverting to his true form.
      • During their attempt to lead the Shapeshifter into a trap, Dipper and Mabel approach him directly. By the end of it, Peggy is holding a baby Stanley in her arms and almost sobbing with dread and grief, fully convinced he's going to suffer a Death by De-aging at any minute. Thankfully, undoing the anti-aging cream turns out to be a quick swab-down with a baby wipe, quickly restoring Stanley to his normal age.
