Characters in A Sign of Affection

A freshman in college who is attending a non-deaf school for the first time in her life. She can communicate via sign language, reading lips, or through her phone. She meets Itsuomi on the train and falls in love with him after they spend time together.

  • Cheery Pink: She's a cheerful college student and dyes her hair pink.
  • Cute Mute: Yuki is a sweet-hearted college student who is deaf, and as such, never talks, only communicating through sign language, writing or texting. However, the audience can still hear her inner thoughts.
  • Elective Mute: Yuki is capable of speech, but soon after her voice was mocked as weird sounding, she started staying completely quiet.
  • Naïve Everygirl: She's sweet, naïve and innocent.
  • Oblivious to Love: She has known Oushi since they were children, but she has never noticed his crush on her. To be fair, Oushi is very much a Tsundere and this causes Yuki to view him like an Annoying Younger Sibling more than anything else.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Aside from her hair, Yuki loves everything pink, from her clothes to her hearing aids.
  • Reading Lips: She's deaf, but understands people through adept lip-reading.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Yuki has dyed pink hair and is an absolute sweetheart.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's very shy due to her deafness.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She falls in love with Itsuomi because he's very kind and considerate to her.
  • Talking with Signs: She usually communicates through text messages and writing.
  • When She Smiles: Itsuomi becomes even more smitten with her when he sees her laughing for the first time.

An upperclassman at Yuki's school, who she meets on the train while trying to deal with a foreigner. He loves traveling overseas and is fluent in multiple languages. He works part-time at a cafe bar run by his cousin Kyouya. He takes an interest in Yuki and asks her to teach him sign language to get closer to her.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: He's fond of patting Yuki's head.
  • Child of Two Worlds: He was born in Japan, but lived most of his life in Germany.
  • Friend to All Children: He gets along well with children.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Guy: Itsuomi is a more subdued version - he's not as hyper or wacky as some versions, but he's a rather direct and active guy who dyes his hair silver, has multiple tattoos, and regularly travels (to the extent that the biggest reason it takes as long as it does for him to get together with Yuki is that he took a couple trips abroad after meeting her). Yuki even notes that he experiences worlds she never even imagined, and that getting to know him opens up these worlds to her.
  • Mellow Fellow: He's very laid-back and easygoing.
  • Nice Guy: Itsuomi is a sweet guy, as he often tries to help others like his cousin or Yuki. It's no surprise that Yuki falls for him.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: He's put off by Emma's overly clingy behavior and relentless pursuit of him. He ends up choosing the demure Yuki over her.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Itsuomi tends to get uncomfortably close to people, usually to Yuki (not that she minds). According to Kyouya, he's always been like this.
  • Omniglot: Itsuomi can speak Japanese, English and German. He also reveals that he can speak a little Chinese and is currently learning Spanish and Japanese Sign Language.
  • One Head Taller: He's about a head taller than Yuki.
  • Shipper on Deck: He supports RinxKyouya.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: He was never interested in dating anyone until he met Yuki.
  • Understanding Boyfriend: He's very understanding of Yuki's deafness and learns sign language so he can have conversations with her.

Yuki's childhood friend, who knows sign language. While he has an obvious crush on Yuki, he's bad at expressing himself and he tends to annoy Yuki because of it.

  • Cannot Spit It Out: As if his Tsundere attitude and Condescending Compassion weren't enough of a barrier to any potential relationship with Yuki, Oushi seems to be utterly incapable of admitting his own crush on Yuki (he's very clearly not in denial; he just won't admit it to anyone else). His sister even calls him out on it.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He's had a crush on Yuki since he was a kid, but his bad attitude combined with his inability to communicate his feelings properly means he never had a chance with her.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He's not happy to see how close Yuki and Itsuomi have gotten.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: Ultimately, a combination of Oushi being a Tsundere, his Condescending Compassion and incapability of admitting his crush on Yuki is hurting his chances of being seen as a love interest for her.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He really has no chance with Yuki, thanks in part to him getting in his own way.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Deep underneath his hostile, childish jealousy lies a kid whose heart is in the right place but has trouble communicating his true feelings. Yuki uses the way he signs as an example: while his hand movements are sharp and pointed, sometimes they also look fragile, like he's struggling to convey what he means.
  • Tsundere: Towards Yuki. While he does care about her, he acts too rude and insensitive because of her deafness. Even the way he signs reflect this with Yuki remarking his hands are too sharp but sometimes look frail which makes her wonder if he worries about her.
  • Unknown Rival: He sees Itsuomi as a love rival for Yuki's heart, but Itsuomi doesn't feel any hostility towards him and even tries to befriend him because he knows both of them care about Yuki and she wouldn't like it for them to fight over her.

Itsuomi's cousin. He runs a bar and grill Itsuomi works at, and where Yuki and Rin frequent.

  • Bartender Confidant: Owns a bar that Itsuomi works at. He sometimes also gives advice to Yuki and Itsuomi.
  • Beta Couple: With Rin. Their relationship develops in parallel to Yuki and Itsuomi's.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: He starts realizing his feelings for Rin after he gets jealous due to overhearing her phone call from a coworker that was trying to ask her out.
  • Nice Guy: He's just as nice as Itsuomi.
  • Oblivious to Love: He's a bit slow to notice Rin's feelings for him.
  • The Reliable One: Out of the main characters, Kyouya is the most down-to-earth and calm.

Itsuomi and Shin's friend from high school. She has a huge crush on him, which he does not reciprocate in the slightest. Unbeknownst to her, Shin has a crush on her as well.

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Emma really doesn't like it when she sees Itsuomi near Yuki. She acts clingy with him and even makes comments out loud to Yuki to suggest she got intimate with him. Of course, Itsuomi is having none of it.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She keeps stuffed animals in her bedroom.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: When she's walking down the street, people turn to check her out and comment on her looking like a model.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Itsuomi completely ignores her advances towards him and she completely lost her chance when he chose to date Yuki.
  • Informed Attractiveness: She's considered to be very pretty by the other characters. In terms of design, however, she has the same Generic Cuteness as everyone else.
  • Love at First Sight: She has been crushing on Itsuomi ever since she first laid eyes on him in high school.
  • Love Revelation Epiphany: After Itsuomi and Yuki start dating, Shin tells Emma about it and asks her to go out with him. Emma then starts realizing she likes Shin as more than a friend and reciprocates his feelings.
  • Oblivious to Love: She has no clue Shin has a crush on her, since she's so fixated on Itsuomi. Justified because Shin outright denied having feelings for her when he thought he would lose her to Itsuomi eventually. She starts to notice after Itsuomi and Yuki become a couple.
  • Rejection Affection: She has been pursuing Itsuomi for years despite his clear lack of interest in her and constant rejection of her advances.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: Emma has been fixated on Itsuomi since at least high school (given that the series begins with Itsuomi in at least his second year in college, that's at least 3 years). The problem she has is that he has no romantic interest in her whatsoever. She'd later lose her chance when Itsuomi dates Yuki. She ended up moving forward with much difficulty on her part and found her Second Love in Shin.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She eventually realizes she has feelings for Shin because he has always been sweet to her.

Itsuomi and Emma's friend from high school. He has had a crush on Emma for a while, but she's too hung up on Itsuomi to notice. He currently works at a hair salon.

  • Camp Straight: He works at a hair salon and has an androgynous appearance. He also has romantic feelings for Emma.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He has been in love with Emma for years, but couldn't admit it to her because she had a big crush on Itsuomi and didn't want to get rejected. He finally starts communicating his feelings for Emma after Itsuomi gets together with Yuki.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Emma has no idea that Shin has a crush on her, but he still kindly hears her out when she's depressed about Itsuomi not paying attention to her and takes her out to eat to cheer her up.
  • Insecure Love Interest: He didn't make a pass at Emma for years because he believed he could never compare to Itsuomi.
  • In Vino Veritas: He's usually the cool type, but becomes very loud and lively when he's drunk.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He was willing to give up on his feelings for Emma if she and Itsuomi got together. After he finds out Itsuomi is dating Yuki, he decides to take the chance and asks Emma to go out with him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has shoulder-length hair that he wears in a half-ponytail.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Emma is the only girl he has ever loved. He tried dating another girl once, but he got dumped because the girl could tell Shin really liked Emma.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He has an aloof side to him, but is warm towards the people he's close to.
