Invenfon 23, 1929. s. B ENENATO HAILABLE MATTER OF ENVELOPES Filed June 18, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Apr. 23, 1929.
PATENT OFFICE.
I STELLA. BENENATO, OF PHOENIX, ARIZONA.
mum nurse. or nuvnmrns;
Application filed June 18, 1924. semi Ho..720,88 1."
This invention relates to connecting means for mailable matter, such as envelopes, paper riceptacles, postal cards, wrappers and the l' 'e.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved means of temporarily connecting mailable matter over that shown in my issued United States Patent numbered 1,453,616, and especially to provide against the accidental breaking of the connecting meansand the consequent separation of the jolned articles, and to provide a connecting means which is integral with the articles to be connected and which may be quickly, simply and easily formed in the making of the articles themselves, and whereby the articles ma be stamped by dies in integral form inclu ing the connectin means.
A further dbject of this invention is to provide a means whereby the gummed portions of the top flaps may be subsequently damped and the envelopes sealed in one operation without possible interference of sticking or gumming to the adjacent envelope, and in which each of the top flaps is provided with an extra outer edge ungummed and which in overlapping relation may be temporarily connected with the top flaps extended upward or downward. I A further object of this invention is to provide for the arrangement of the envelopes in boxes and removably connecting together any given or desired number, makm insertions into and stamping the envelopes iefore they are separated, and drawing the same into a typewriter automatically by rotation of the platen or insertion from an open or opening in a box.
With the foregoin and other objects in 0 view I have invented the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a series of envelopes connected together in accord with my invention,
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the showing in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective of the showing in Figure 2, with the flaps in different positions;
Figure 4 is a section at 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a section at 5-5 of Figure 7;
Figure 6 is a blank, from which one of the envelopes shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 is made;
Figure 7. is 'a plurality of envelopes of modified form, connected; and v Figure 8 is a blank from which the modification shown in Figure 7 is made.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views and in the specification, in which, referring to Figure 6, I provide an envelope blank 2, having side flaps 3 and 4, a top flap 5, a'bottom flap 6, and tongues 7 and 8, extending from the flaps 6. The tongues 7 and 8 are adapted to bend upon the dotted line 9 and also in alinement with the edge 10 of the flap 6, so that as shown particularly in Figure 3, the flap 6 upon being bent upon the line 11, with the flaps 3 and 4 bent over and sealing the flap in the form'of an envelope, the ton es 7 and 8 bent upon the edge 10 of the ap 2 and being gummed on the under side, are adhesively connected to the under side of the flap 2 as far as the dotted line 9, leaving an adhesive fla between the dotted line 9 and the distant en of the tongue 8, whereby the envelope is connected to the succeeding envelope. The flap 5 is provided with a gummed area 12, and a nonadhesive area 13; the area 13 adapted to overlap the succeedin fla 5 on the next envelope and serve as a s iel or protection, but being ungummed so that it will not adhere to the next envelope and will only seal on the portion contacting the envelope to which the flap belongs.
It is obvious in the operation of these onvelopes that they are integrally joined together so that they 'form a substantially continuous sheet, whereby a t pist may without interchanging envelopes a ter the addressing of each one continuously address the envelopes; and, further, whereby-with a sponge or ot er suitable means run over the under side of the sheet, the whole may be moistened for sealin and sealed within a short. time.
In t e modification shown in Figures 7 and 8, I provide the set of flaps 2, 3", 4 and 5, functioning similar respectively to the fla s 2, 3, 4 and 5; and upon the flap 4 I provi e a lower gummed surface 14-, and also provide at its terminal a tongue 15, the tongue 15 rovided at its lower ed e with a secon ary tongue 16, being provided with an adhesive, 17 and the tongue 15 being provided with an angular tertiary tongue 18.,
In closin the envelope, the tongues 2, 3 and 4 are olded over in the'usual manner, with the tertiary tongue 18 underlapping the tongue 3, and with the tongue 16 extending as shown in Figure 7, and its gummed surface adhesively connected to the flap 5" of the next succeeding envelope. The tongue 16 is preferabiy perforated at its root, as at 19, whereby the envelopes may be easily disconnected when desired.
Claims:
1. .An envelope consisting of a blank having a flap extending at the side of the blank,- the side flap provided with a air of tongue-like extensions, a secondary ap adapted to cooperate with the first flap, one of the tonguelike extensions adapted to engage the secondary flap, and the other tongue-like extension adapted to be adhesively connected to a secondary envelope.
2. An envelope including a body member and a lurality of flaps struck out from a single s 1eet in the form of a unitary structure, one of said flaps having a plurality oi": tongues projecting from one edge thereof to provide for the securing thereto of another envelope, one of said tongues being gumrned on one side for securing the envelope to another and perforatcd to facilitate detachment of one onvelope from another, said envelope including a sealing flap adapted to overlie said tongues when in sealed position and having its free edge ungummed and adapted to overlie said securing tongue be 0nd its perforated point to permit the detaeiment of the tongue along said perforations.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
