IMPROVEMENT IN SHADE-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,252, dated July 29, 1873; application filed May 20, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS J. ATWOOD, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Globe or Shade Holders for Gas- Fixtures, of which the following is a specification:

Shade holders or supports have been 'inade of wire with each arm composed of two wires, upon which is a sliding ferrule.

My invention relates to a globe or shade holder for gas-fixtures in which the arms are made of double wire, and the ends of the wires are united by a sheet-metal cap that is pressed to place and indented, thereby making a neat and strong connection.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of the Shade-holder. Fig. 2 isa vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clampin g-rin g, and Fig. 4 represents, by a sectional view, the sheet-metal cap for confining the ends of the wire.

The arms a a a are made of wire, double, and the wire extends at the center portion from one arm to the next, the folds being at the ends of two of the arms, and the ends of the wire being side by side at the end of the third arm. The length of these double-wire arms and the shape in which they are bent will depend upon the use to which the holder is to be put. That shown is adapted to a globe. In any instance the wires near the center are sufficiently near together to be received within the flanged clamping-ring b, that is struck up out of sheet metal, and made with flanges c that pass around the wires between the arms and clamp them firmly together. This ring I) is of a size to fit upon the end of the gasfiXtnre pipe and be clamped to place by screwin g the tip upon such pipe. Thereby the holder is held firmly and adapted to receive a globe or shade, the arms forming springs that allow the flange of the globe to be received therein. The two ends of the wire side by side at the end of one of the arms are secured together by a sheetmetal cap, 6, made of a cylinder somewhat similar to a percussion-cap flattened so as to receive the ends of the wires, and this cap is pressed down upon the wires so as to assume the shape of the ends of the wires, and indentations should be made at 0 to prevent the cap slipping 011'. The clamping-ring b may be made like an eyelet with the flanges closed, around the wires.

I claim as my invention The sheet-metal capt' receiving the ends of the wires at the end of oneof the arms, and confined thereto by indentations, as set forth.
