Abstract
A continuous process for making polycarbonates comprises continously feeding a dihydric compound, phosgene, a chain-terminating agent and a catalyst to a reactor in which polycondensation is effected by the interfacial process and in which the aqueous and organic phases immediately on reaching the reactor are emulsified by intimate mixing, the emulsion containing the reaction products being withdrawn from the reactor. Emulsification may be effected ultrasonically or by high speed stirrers. Reaction may be effected in two consecutive reactors (which may be two compartments in a single casing) and the reactants may be fed only to the first reactor or to both. Alternatively, the catalyst and chain-terminating agent may be fed only to the second reactor or divided between both. The reactants and solvent may be pre-cooled before admission to the reactor. In examples, the dihydric compound was bisphenol A, the chain-terminating agent was phenol, the catalyst was triethylamine and the organic solvent was methylene chloride.
