Abstract

This study aims to identify Santri's perceptions of the challenges and opportunities in learning the sorogan method in Modern Islamic Boarding Schools. The research method is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted through thematic coding to find the main patterns of santri perceptions related to the implementation of the sorogan method. The results showed that sorogan has significant advantages as an individualised learning method, especially in improving in-depth understanding of the yellow classical books and shaping santri characters, such as patience, discipline, and responsibility. However, the challenges faced include time constraints due to the tight schedule combining formal and diniyah curricula and the need to adapt to technology. On the other hand, great opportunities are seen in integrating technological elements, such as audio or video recordings and learning applications, which can complement the effectiveness of this method. This research also proposes the Hybrid Sorogan model, which combines the traditional sorogan approach with modern technological innovations, to answer the needs of Modern Islamic Boarding Schools without losing the core values of this method. The research conclusion confirms that the sorogan method remains relevant and adaptive to the needs of the times, provided that strategic and innovative management is carried out. The findings contribute to the pesantren education literature and offer practical guidance for developing tradition-based learning methods in a modern context.

Abstract

This research discusses the santri's perception of the hermeneutic principle in teaching the Qur'an and tafsir at Pesantren Al-Hikmah. The main issue raised is how hermeneutics, as a modern interpretation approach, is accepted and understood by santri in a tradition-based pesantren education environment. This study aims to identify santri perceptions, explore the challenges of hermeneutics implementation, and analyse its relevance in the development of pesantren education. The research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The research subjects were senior santri, ustaz, and pesantren managers. The results show that the santri's perception of hermeneutics is divided into two: a group that accepts this approach as a relevant innovation to understand the Qur'an contextually, and a group that is sceptical because they are worried about deviations from classical interpretation. In teaching, hermeneutics is used to address contemporary issues such as social and environmental justice, but its implementation faces challenges in the form of ideological resistance, limited literature, and faculty capacity. The discussion shows that hermeneutics can be a bridge between tradition and modernity in Qur'anic interpretation, provided it is applied with a systematic approach and respect for tradition. In conclusion, the integration of hermeneutics in pesantren education has the potential to broaden students' horizons and answer the challenges of globalisation. This research contributes to the development of Islamic education theory, especially in the integration of classical and modern tafsir methods, and becomes the basis for further research on the application of hermeneutics in pesantren.

Abstract

Abstract

This study addresses the challenges of Islamic vocational education in developing students’ religious character alongside professional skills. At SMK Al-Azhar Batam, religious habituation strategically instills values such as discipline, honesty, trustworthiness, courage, self-confidence, love for Islam, and noble character within vocational activities. The research aims to understand the role of religious habituation in character development, examine values reflected in vocational practice, describe the internalization process, and identify supporting and inhibiting factors. Using a qualitative case study with interviews, observations, and documentation, the study finds that internalization occurs through six continuous stages: value planting, habituation, vocational integration, teacher modeling, internalization, and cultural embedding. Success depends on school commitment, teacher role models, program regularity, and facilities, while obstacles include students’ motivation, diverse backgrounds, external influences, and a demanding curriculum. The study implies the need for family-based, integrative strategies and alignment of religious values with vocational practice to sustain character internalization.
