Abstract

This study focuses on the impact of consumer boycotts on Starbucks' stock price fluctuations, employing an in-depth empirical approach to analyze the moderating factors that influence the intensity and duration of such effects. The study provides quantitative data on stock price variations during different boycott periods and explores the roles of macroeconomic conditions, social media sentiment, and mitigation strategies in moderating boycott impacts. Findings indicate that consumer boycotts can significantly trigger stock price volatility, particularly when accompanied by intense media coverage and high social media engagement. Under unstable economic conditions, boycott impacts tend to be more severe and require extended recovery times. Conversely, companies adopting proactive crisis communication approaches and implementing responsive and transparent mitigation strategies are better positioned to expedite stock price recovery. This research contributes to financial and consumer behavior literature by demonstrating that investor perceptions are influenced by public sentiment dynamics, particularly as recorded on social media platforms. Furthermore, the findings highlight the critical importance of crisis and reputation management in the digital era, where rapid, uncontrolled information flow can accelerate the spread of negative sentiment affecting company valuations. These results aim to assist multinational companies in developing more adaptive strategies to address potential consumer boycotts in the future.

Abstract

The contemporary digital era has fundamentally transformed the business communication landscape, where consumers possess significant power in shaping brand reputation through social media. Starbucks Corporation faced massive boycott waves triggered by political position controversies in late 2023, resulting in market value losses of 11 billion US dollars. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the role of crisis communication strategies in mitigating the impact of Brand Switching and stock price decline due to consumer boycotts using Starbucks as a case study objectThe research employed a quantitative approach with case study design, involving 384 respondents aged 18-30 years through purposive sampling. Research instruments consisted of structured questionnaires with Likert scale 1-5, analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and multiple regression analysis. Results showed low effectiveness of Starbucks' crisis communication (score 2.34/5), with Brand Switching intention reaching 68.2%. Significant negative correlations were found between crisis communication effectiveness with Brand Switching (r = -0.672) and stock volatility (r = -0.445). Maximum stock price decline reached 9.47% with market capitalization falling by 11.2 billion USD. Starbucks' reactive and defensive crisis communication strategy failed to mitigate boycott impacts. Development of crisis communication playbook emphasizing proactive engagement and transparency is recommended, along with implementation of early detection systems based on real-time sentiment analysis.

Abstract

The implementation of the CoreTax system in early 2025 has created new challenges in corporate tax management, particularly regarding invoice delays and administrative sanctions. This study aims to analyze the causal relationship between invoice delays, administrative sanctions, and accounting strategies while developing optimal strategies for the CoreTax era. The research methodology employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design involving 412 companies that have implemented CoreTax. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares approach to test structural models and causal relationships between variables. Results indicate that invoice delays have a significant positive effect on administrative sanctions (β = 0.585, p < 0.001), administrative sanctions serve as full mediators in relationships with preventive and mitigation strategies, while accounting strategies positively influence compliance performance (β = 0.672, p < 0.001). Responsive strategies demonstrate the highest effectiveness in managing delay consequences, while CoreTax technology integration with accounting systems requires enhanced technological literacy. Findings confirm the importance of developing integrated accounting strategies encompassing early warning systems, predictive analytics, and risk mitigation mechanisms to optimize tax compliance in the digital era.
