Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the advance organizer model on the accuracy of students' writing. It used a single-group pretest-posttest design, which allowed for a pre-experimental design, with 9th grade students from SMP Negeri 5 Menia as participants. The statistical technique used to analyze the data was analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). At the 0.05 level of significance, the hypotheses were tested. The data in the tables t-Test: Paired Two Sample for Means (9-A) reveals that the obtained t-value was 13.276, which was significantly higher than the threshold value of 0.05. The post-test, on the other hand, had a mean of 78.91. Due to the fact that the p-value was less than the 0.05 standard level of significance, the researchers can reject the null hypothesis (Ho). Thus, the second hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating that the advance organizer model had a significant effect on students’ writing. It is recommended that English teachers use this model to help students improve their writing ability. For students, it is suggested that they pay closer attention to the teaching model being used, such as implicit and explicit grammar instruction through the advance organizer model, so they can also explore their writing ability. Other studies, on the other hand, should investigate the effect of alternative organizers on specific writing genres or use advance organizer in combination with other research methods such as mix-method.

Abstract

English is one of the main subjects that must be mastered by students to keep up with the development of science and technology. To anticipate the development of science and technology, it is necessary to improve English language skills in vocational high school students. This paper presents a descriptive qualitative study on the implementation of reward and punishment in English learning in a vocational high school, namely SMKN 1 Jabon. The researchers used observation and questionnaires as instruments to collect data. The participants in this study were an English teacher and 36 students. The researchers implemented three types of rewards and one type of punishment: social reward, token reward, material reward, and presentation punishment. The results of the questionnaire indicate that the students have agreed and accepted well the rewards and punishments implemented by the teacher. They feel happy with the praise given by the teacher with good words such as good job, amazing, great, and happy when given gifts, congratulations, and extra points as rewards.  Therefore, they become enthusiastic and compete in learning English. In addition, they also agree with the punishments given to students, such as being given advice, and warnings, standing in front of the class, cleaning the class, running around the field, and others. Therefore, they are discouraged and do not want to repeat their mistakes.

This study delves into the effects of the SISPEL (Sistem Pelanggaran) application on character development among students in vocational high schools. Specifically, it focuses on 23 students from the Vocational High School Khusus Angkatan Laut - 1 Surabaya, who have been identified for violating school rules. By exclusively employing the SISPEL application, the research intricately examines its role in shaping character traits within the context of vocational education. Through a meticulous questionnaire-based survey, the study endeavors to highlight the application's influence on ethical values, moral principles, and the cultivation of character-building skills. The primary goal is to unveil the multi-dimensional impact it has on fostering holistic student development. The findings of this exploration not only enrich the current comprehension of character development within this specific educational framework but also offer insights into the potential of technology-driven tools like SISPEL to cultivate well-rounded individuals. This research contributes to the broader discourse on character education and underscores the significance of innovative approaches in molding the ethical and moral foundation of students.
