Abstract

The difference between online and offline learning impacts the students' achievements in English learning. This study aimed to analyze the comparison between students' achievement in offline and online English learning. This study used mixed methods research between quantitative and qualitative research methods. The population of this research was 113 students. The researcher used the purposive sampling technique and took 28 respondents as the study's sample. The instrument of this study was students' achievement data, interviews, and observation. The result shows that the student who learned in offline learning had a higher score than those who learned in online learning. It was proved by the average score that students obtained. Students who knew offline got a score of 78.93. Meanwhile, students who learned online got a score of 75.00, indicating that offline learning is more effective than online learning. The data showed Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 less than 0.05. That value significantly differed between students' online and offline learning achievement. These happen because of several problems that affect student achievement; students' less cohesiveness, being uncomfortable studying, lacking attention and motivation, and the limitations of supporting facilities in learning. It makes students lazy to learn English.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the learning strategies used by EFL learners in developing their speaking skills. It employed a qualitative method with triangulation instruments including questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The participants were the EFL learners in the third semester of the English Education Study Program of Tadulako University (n=10), chosen by using the snowball sampling technique. The researcher distributed Language Learning Strategy Questionnaire (LLSQ) to learners to investigate their language learning strategies in speaking skills based on Oxford theory, which consists of six parts of the strategies namely memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, effective strategy, and social strategy. The results of the questionnaire showed that metacognitive has become the most frequently used learning strategy by successful learners with a mean score of 4.22 indicating as strategies are always or almost always used because this strategy help learners regulate their learning, such as paying attention, planning to learn as much as they can and doing self-evaluation to be better in speaking English. This study also found that learners who are successful in speaking skills used a combination of all kinds of learning strategies to improve their speaking skills. Learners have positive improvement in speaking components such as the better pronunciation of English words, use of good grammar, have more vocabulary, fluency in speaking, and can overcome the problems that may occur when they speak English.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the teachers’ strategies in teaching vocabulary to the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1, SMP Negeri 2, and SMP Satap Negeri 1 Kasimbar. The design used was descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were three English teachers teaching vocabulary in three different schools. In collecting the data, the researcher interviewed the three teachers and analyzed the the interviewed results. The results of this research indicate that the strategies used by the three English teachers were different Teacher one used a dialogue strategy, teacher two used showing picture strategy, and teacher three used a question and answer strategy. each of these three strategies has advantages in improving students' vocabulary skills. In addition, the problems faced by the three English teachers in teaching vocabulary to the students in the second grade of junior high schools at Kecamatan Kasimbar also have many factors such as Unstable internet network, lack of student interest in learning English vocabulary, likes to annoy friends in class, most students do not bring a dictionary to school and pronunciation errors. to solve the problems the three teachers Always evaluate the learning given, avoid giving very long assignments, invite students to actively participate, teach note-taking, personal approach, and form groups of students in learning.

Abstract

This research aimed to identification and analysis students’ ability and difficulties in writing descriptive text. This research used qualitative descriptive methods. The research subject are X grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Palu. The research took 20 students as sample. This research used interview and test to collect the data. The result of this research shows the students’ ability, the students’ difficulty in writing descriptive text and the factors students’ difficulties in writing descriptive texts. The difficulties are difficulties in generic structure, difficulties in grammar, and difficulties in mechanic, while the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text are lack of proficiency in the text production skills, and lack of interest in learning English

Abstract

This research was aimed to obtain the most problematic dental fricative sounds to pronounce and to determine the factor caused by the students to produce error in pronouncing dental fricative sounds. The researchers applied descriptive qualitative design by purposive sampling technique to choose the participants. There were 15 participants taken from the first-year students of English Education Study Program 2020/2021. The instruments of data collection were documents and interview. The document is in the form of video speaking from the participant, used to analyze students pronunciation and the interview used to decide the factor of students error. The result of the research showed that the frequency of students error were 15 percent in /θ/ sound and 85 percent in /ð/ sound. Most of the students substituted sound /θ/ with /t/ and sound /ð/ with /d/. They made the error because they have interference from their mother tongue. Thus, the most problematic dental fricative sound is /ð/ sound and the error caused by the students is interlingual error.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out that the Application of Partner Reading Strategy improves students’ reading comprehension. The population was the grade Eight students at SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. The researcher used quasi- experimental design. The researcher sample were VIII A as the experimental group which consisted of 28 students and VIII B as the control group which consisted 28 student. The test was administered twice: pre test and post test. The data were analyzed statically in order to find out the significant achievement of the students in the pre test and the post test. The experimental group was given the treatment by applying Partner Reading Strategy, while the control group was taught reading descriptive text with conventional strategy. The instrument used in collecting data was a test given as pre-test and post-test. The result of tests shows that the mean score of experimental group was 88.0 from 52,3 in the pretest, and the control group was 75 from 54,5 in the pretest. This score shows that the mean score of the experimental group is higher than the mean score of the control group on posttest. By applying one-tailed test at 0.05 level of significance with 54 degree of freedom (df), it is found that, the tcounted value of (1,87) is greater than ttable value (1.67). It confirms that, the research hypothesis was accepted. Based on the result, it concludes that, Partner Reading Strategy improves students’ reading comprehension at the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to investigate whether or not the application of Short Conversation Technique improve the speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Palasa. Additionally, this research was conducted through quasi experimental research design in which the samples of the research were grades VIII B and VIII C. The obtained data of this research were analyzed statistically in order to find out the significant difference between two groups on the posttest after the treatment using Short Conversation given to the experimental group. It was found that the mean scores of both the experimental and control groups on the posttest are respectively 75.56 and 61.45. Furthermore, referring to the ttable value of df 46 (24+24-2) by applying 0.05 level of significance on one-tailed test, it is found that the tcounted value of this research (6.1) is higher than the ttable value (1.68). On top of that, the application of Short Conversation Technique can improve the speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Palasa.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether using the PQRST method can improve the reading comprehension of the tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tolitoli. The researchers applied a quasi-experimental research design by using non-random sampling techniques to get the sample. The instruments of data collection were pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was used to measure the students' prior knowledge, and the post-test was used to measure the improvement in students' reading comprehension using the PQRST method after the treatment. The t-test was analyzed to compare the mean scores of the experimental group (93.95) and the control group (89.58). The significance level was 0.05 with 60 degrees of freedom (df=66). The result of data analysis indicates that the t-counted (2,92) is higher than the t-table (1.659). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. It was concluded that using the PQRST method can improve students' reading comprehension of the tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tolitoli.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Palu can improve the students' writing skills or not; the researchers applied a quasi-experimental design which involved experimental class and control class. The population of this research was the eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 7 Palu. The researchers selected the sample by using a purposive sampling technique. The sample of this research was the students of XI 3(experimental class) and XI 1 (control class), which were both classes consisting of 32 students. The technique of data collection was tested (pre-test and post-test). The experimental class was treated by applying the CIRC method, while the method did not use by the control class. The result of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test. The researchers found a significant difference between the results of the experimental class. It was proved by applying the testing hypothesis. The researchers found that the t-counted (3.29) was higher than the t-table (2.001). It means that the hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, using the CIRC method effectively improves the writing skills of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Palu.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether students’ vocabulary mastery is Improve or not through personal vocabulary notes technique. This research is Pre-Experimental method. Data collection Techniques are Pre-test and Post-test. The results of this research showed that there was improvement of students' vocabulary mastery from the difference between the pre-test and post-test is 31.1, The results of the research found that students’ vocabulary this can be seen from the height of the t-conted 88.8 than t-table 1.729. Based on the result, the researcher hopes that the personal vocabulary notes technique can used improve students’ vocabulary mastery of SMP Negeri 3 Totikum
