Abstract

Tujuan Penelitian ini adalah untuk penerapan permainan papan dalam mengajarkan keterampilan berbicara. Metode Penelitian ini menggunakan quasi experimental dengan rancangan non-equivalent kelas kontrol. Ada 56 siswa yang menjadi sampel pada kelas experiment dan kelas kontrol. Pengambilan data di ambil dari Pretest dan Posttest. Data yang teridentifikasi bahwa nilai rata rata siswa di kelas experiment 78.03 lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan kelas kontrol yang mana nilai rata rata hanya 6.12. Dalam melakukan analisis data dengan menggunakan rumus t-test. Perhitungan hasil data tcount(tc) adalah 6.12 lebih tinggi di bandingkan dengan hasil data ttable(tt) yang hanya 1.998. Dari hasil yang teridentifikasi bahwa ada pengembangan yang signifikan dalam mengajarkan permainan papan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan siswa dalam berbicara. Hal ini menyatakan bahwa mengajarkan keterampilan berbicara siswa dengan menggunakan permainan papan effektif. sehinga permainan papan dapat mengembangkan keterampilan siswa dalam berbicara.

Abstract

Penelitian ini  bertujuan untuk menggambarkan penggunaan alih kode  dalam ruangan kelas yang terjadi antara guru dan siswa. Sistem dalam alih kode tersebut adalah tentang tipe dan fungsi serta apakah alih kode tersebut layak digunakan dalam interaksi kelas atau tidak. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas sebelas di SMA Negeri 2 Palu yang terdiri dari 40 orang siswa. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan enam kali pertemuan. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa-siswa kelas XI MIA 2 dan XI MIA 6 yang dipilh secara acak. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ditemukan 3 tipe dan 5 fungsi penggunaan alih kode yang dilakukan melalui percakapan antara guru dan siswa. Tipe tersebut adalah penanda kode, kode penegas antarkalimat, dan kelanjutan dengan pembicara sebelumnya. Fungsi alih kode dalam penelitian ini ditemukan ada lima yakni sebagai pengalih topik, pemberi petunjuk, penerjemah, penggabungan kosakata, dan pengulangan kata. Selain itu  ditemukan pula  yakni, pertama, dalam kebiasaaan menggunakan  satu bahasa atau alih kode dalam pengajaran, terdapat 41% siswa yang sangat setuju diajarkan dalam satu bahasa dapat  membawa manfaat bagi mereka. Kedua,   alih kode dan efeknya bagi pengguna bahasa pertama dan bahasa kedua, 58% sangat tidak setuju jika menggabungkan dua bahasa dapat melemahkan bahasa Indonesia mereka. Ketiga, alih kode dan efeknya bagi guru dan siswa, 64% siswa lebih menghargai guru yang mengajar dalam dua bahasa yakni bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Keempat,  alih kode dan pengaruhnya dalam pelaksaan ujian, 47% siswa tidak setuju jika guru hanya mengajar  dalam bahasa Indonesia dapat memengaruhi kelulusan mereka dalam ujian, namun 35%  setuju jika guru mengajar dalam bahasa Indonesia mereka akan dapat lulus. Dari hal tersebut, diindikasi bahwa alih kode dalam interaksi kelas dapat membuat siswa lebih fokus dalam menerima pelajaran. Hal tersebut kwerena penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris dapat membuat mereka lebih mengerti arti yang dimaksud.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengenai penggunaan puisi sebagai bahan ajar khususnya dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing, karena membutuhkan strategi untuk memahami pesan di balik puisi tersebut. Salah satu strategi yang bisa dilakukan untuk memahami pesan adalah dengan menggunakan teori Analisis Wacana. Penelitian ini menggunakan Analisis Mikrostruktural dan Makrostruktural dari  Dijk. Analisis Mikrostruktural menggunakan analisis parafrase dan analisis leksikal. Sementara itu, Analisis Makrostruktural menggunakan nilai moral dan memperhatikan latar belakang penyair. Objek penelitian adalah empat puisi pilihan yang merupakan bagian dari buku Poem that Every Children Should know yang diedit oleh Mary E. Burts. Puisi yang diedit adalah Little Things oleh Julia Abigail Fletcher Carney, puisi kedua adalah Twinkle Twinkle Little Star oleh anonymous, puisi ketiga adalah Little White Lily oleh George Macdonald dan puisi keempat adalah How The Leaves Come Down  yang ditulis oleh Sarah Chauncey Woolsey. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa analisis mikrostruktural menunjukkan parafrase yang memudahkan pemahaman dari tiap-tiap puisi. Analisis makrostruktural menunjukkan adanya kesamaan nilai moral dari ketiga puisi tersebut bahwa ada kesamaan yaitu segala sesuatu di dunia ini memiliki peran. Selain itu, ketiga puisi ini bisa diaplikasikan untuk pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Aspek yang bisa diajarkan meliputi kosa kata, tata bahasa, mendengarkan, dan berbicara

Abstract

Main issue of this commuity service is Motivating Students. Its objective was Increasing Vocabulary of English Language. Its specific target is SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palu has students who have more vocabulary so that they can easily understand and express sentences of the EFL (English as a Foreign Language). They can be global students if they can increase vocabulary to express the internatonal language. Commuicative method was used to reach the objective. Formerly they were shy and unconfident in expressing the language vocabulary, but after being motivated to increase the global language vocabulary they then were confident to practice it by interacting with the community service team and have spirits better better than before to increase the vocabulary of English so that they can express the lingua franca words. The team motivated them to increase their English vocabulary practically and accompanied them to apply the practical ways of increasing the EFL vocabulary so that they have been able to express its words. They can be motivated to increase the vocabulary by telling them status and significances of English in Indonesia.Keywords: Motivating, Increasing, English, Language, Vocabulary

Abstract

The difference between online and offline learning impacts the students' achievements in English learning. This study aimed to analyze the comparison between students' achievement in offline and online English learning. This study used mixed methods research between quantitative and qualitative research methods. The population of this research was 113 students. The researcher used the purposive sampling technique and took 28 respondents as the study's sample. The instrument of this study was students' achievement data, interviews, and observation. The result shows that the student who learned in offline learning had a higher score than those who learned in online learning. It was proved by the average score that students obtained. Students who knew offline got a score of 78.93. Meanwhile, students who learned online got a score of 75.00, indicating that offline learning is more effective than online learning. The data showed Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 less than 0.05. That value significantly differed between students' online and offline learning achievement. These happen because of several problems that affect student achievement; students' less cohesiveness, being uncomfortable studying, lacking attention and motivation, and the limitations of supporting facilities in learning. It makes students lazy to learn English.

Abstract

The authors address the study on intercultural communicative competence (ICC) of EFL students from different culture at higher education in the classroom setting. ICC is the most interesting and important topic in every meeting among people from different ethnic groups. López-Rocha (2016) mentions that intercultural communicative competence (ICC) needs to be incorporated in the language curriculum if educators hope to help students develop an appreciation for the language and culture studied, an awareness of their own culture, and the development of skills that will allow them to be competent, adaptable, and communicators. This present study therefore aims at exploring students’ perceptions on the practice of intercultural communication competence in EFL classroom at English Department, Faculty of Languages and Literature State University of Makassar, Indonesia in 2019/2020 academic year. A questionnaire was distributed and responded by fifty four undergraduate students. The data obtained from respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics illustrating mean, standard deviation (SD), sum, and percentage of students’ perceptions on the questionnaire dealing with ICC practices in EFL classroom. The findings reveal that the students enjoy interacting with other students from different cultures. Other evidences from the study are: 1) they find it easy to talk to students from different cultures, 2) they like to be with students from different cultures, 3) they are open-minded to students from different cultures, 4) they respect the ways students from different cultures behave, 5) They try to get as much information as they can when interacting with students from different cultures, 6) they never think their culture is better than other cultures, 7) they often give positive responses to students from other cultures when maintaining interaction, and 8) they have a feeling of enjoyment towards diversity in their classroom interaction. The implication of the study is that the inclusion of ICC in the curriculum at higher education is a must.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to prove that applying contextual teaching and learning can develop speaking skills of semester 3 Students of AMIK Tri Dharma Palu. The research applied quasi experimental with non-equivalent control group. The population was 95 students of semester 3 of AMIK Tri Dharma Palu. The samples were 42 students selected employing purposive sampling technique. Paper and-pencil method was used when collecting the data with a test as the instrument. The test was administered twice namely pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed statistically using 0.05 level of significance and 40 degree of freedom. The result show that after receiving intervention through contextual teaching and learning, students’ score got improved. In other words, applying contextual teaching and learning is effective in developing students’ speaking skill of semester 3 of AMIK Tri Dharma Palu.

Abstract

Research on motivation of students in speaking English on extracurricular activity has been really conducted but students are still afraid of speaking English.. This manuscript is a research result dealing with motivation of English Education students in Department of Language and Art Education at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University in speaking English on extracurricular activity. English speaking skill should be developed on extracurricular activity to make ideal atmosphere, but that activity has not been effective yet on all study programs except English Education at that faculty, so that the students have not been able to speak English yet. This research aims at identifying what motivates the university students and how their intention is. Its target is they taste different academic athmosphere to have English skill to interact with English speakers. Respondents of the research were 25 English education students. Its data were collected through Identification (as a procedure) by using Questionnaire (as an instrument) then analysed by using Descriptive Method. The university students join it to be able to communicate in English and get certificate. Those are extrinsic moivation and intrinsic one. Most of them were selfmotivated, so their intrinsic motivations were greater than their extrinsic one. Motivation by themselves or selfmotivator is the greatest. This implies to support decision making in developing English speaking skill of university students. They hopefully carry out and join extracurricular activities to practice their English orally for having English speaking skill proficiently.

Abstract

The main obstacles encountered by students to communicate in English is the lack of their vocabulary, Therefore, there should be strategic efforts made by teachers to increase students’ vocabulary mastery, like using Crossword Puzzle Game. The objective of this research was to examine whether the application of crossword puzzle game can increase vocabulary of grade VII students at SMPS Miftaahul Khairaat Palu or not. This study utilized the Class Action Research design, implemented in a cyclical process encompassing planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research involved 17 seventh-grade students during the academic year 2023-2024.This research was conducted in two cycles; the first cycle consisted of four meetings and the second one consisted of two meetings. Thus, there were totally six meetings in two cycles (cycle 1 and cycle 2). In collecting the data, there were three types of instruments used in this research: tests, observation sheets, and field notes. The results of quantities data analysis indicate that the mean score of posttests in cycle 2, 81.05 is higher than that of posttest in cycle 1, 69.05, and that of pretest in cycle 1, 60.58, Thus, based on the comparison of the students’ vocabulary achievement in pretest and in posttest in cycle 1 and in cycle 2, it can be concluded that the use crossword puzzle game can increase vocabulary of the grade VII students. While the results of qualitative data indicate that the students’ vocabulary increases from cycle 1 to cycle 2.

Abstract

This Community Service aims at socializing Practical Ways of Learning English to students of SMKN (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Negeri, Government Vocational High School) 1 West Dolo. They hopefully can apply them in learning English especially increasing their English vocabulary so that they can make sentences and communicate in the foreign language. They were motivated to master English used to communicate in the international language practically. Its specific traget was the students who had spirits to learn English especially to add their English vocabulary so that they they can to use it constantly and influence their frients in using the English vocabulary in sentences. They will then be easy to communicate in the global language. They also can be global learners. Communicative method is used to reach the objecive. Its result hopefully that through this Socialization the students can use English in simple sentences. The Practical Ways of Learning English explained and trained to them can be applied by them even though they have not been able to be fluent in constructing and expressing the English sentences. They hopefully can use the English even though have not mastered it yet. This Article is outcome of the Community Service.
