Abstract

Aims of this research were to describe the morphology and analyze nutrient values of mature fruits at three different genomic groups of Indonesian banana cultivars including Pisang Berlin (AA), Ambon Hijau (AAA), Raja Bandung (ABB) and Kepok (ABB). Fruit characterization results show that each banana cultivar had specific characteristics related to their genomic group. Pisang Berlin has bright yellow peel and pulp, sugary taste. Pisang Ambon Hijau has fine curved fruit shape, sweet taste and aromatic. Pisang Raja Bandung has medium thickness and yellow peel, firm flesh, sweet and slightly acidic taste. Pisang Kepok has thick coarse and yellow peel with dark brown blotches, mild sweet taste. Fruit characters of Pisang Berlin and Ambon Hijau are close related to their ancestral parents’ Musa acuminata wild species, whereas Pisang Kepok and Pisang Raja Bandung as hybrid cultivars have intermediate characters between Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana wild species. Nutrient analysis revealed that mature banana pulp contain of high carbo-hydrates (16.72-35.24 g 100g-1), total sugar (12.12-20.82 g 100g-1), vitamin C (16.45-30.27 g 100g-1) and potassium (275-375 g 100g-1); moderate protein (1.48-1.78 g 100g-1) and low fat (0.03-0.08 g 100g-1). About 100 g edible portion of banana fruit produce 73.43 to 148.80 calories.

Abstract

Bauhinia winitii Craib (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae) is a woody climber which is currently included in endangered species list. B. winitii seeds are orthodox seeds in which it has hard coat morphologically. Therefore, B. winitii seeds often undergo physical dormancy which can be broken through immersion in certain liquid media. This study aimed to characterize the morphology of B. winitii seeds and determine the pre-sowing treatment method to accelerate the seeds germination of B. winitii. External morphological characterization was carried out by observing the seeds quantitative and qualitative parameters. Characterization of seeds internal morphology was conducted using a digital microscope. Physical dormancy breaking was carried out by immersion in warm and cold water for 24 hours. Morphological characterization data were analyzed descriptively, while seed germination data were analyzed quantitatively by using one-way ANOVA followed by LSD test (with  confidence level of 95%). B. winitii has pod-shaped fruits with 2-6 seeds per pod, the seeds are 1.36 cm x 1 cm in size, 0.47 cm thick and weighed 0.5 g, oblong to conical in shape, smooth and shine surface, with light to dark brown in color. Seeds immersion treatment in warm water could break the physical dormancy of B. winitii seeds thus 63% of the seeds were able to germinate and it was significantly different compared to control and cold water immersion treatment. Technical to germinate B. winitii seed can be known from pre-sowing treatment. This study can be used as a reference for seed identification and germination technical of B. winitii seed.

Abstract

Annona is a genus belongs to Annonaceae family, consisting of numerous species that produce edible fruit.   Four species namely A. glabra, A. montana, A. muricata and A. squamosa collections of Purwodadi Botanic Garden  were recorded for its flowering and fruiting times, since November 2010 to April 2013. The data were scored and complemented with climate data (temperature, rainfall intensity, humidity) then analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis.  The result showed that humidity was the most affected climate factors on the flowering and fruiting times of those species.  Specifically, rainfall intensity (0-550 mm) affected to  Annona muricata, temperature (25,56-28,33 °C) and humidity (66,83-85,02%) to  Annona squamosa, and  humidity to  A. glabra (71,62-85,02% )  and  A. montana (71,62 to 82,94 %) as well. Flowering time of A. glabra occurs three times a year in wet and dry, and fruiting occurs twice a year in the same month. Annona muricata is flowering throughout the year and fruiting twice a year in wet. A. montana and A. squamosa recorded one a year during the wet month.

Abstract

Chaetoceros sp is a phytoplankton commonly found in marine waters. Chaetoceros belongs to the Diatom group with the class of Bacillariophyceae. In the sea this species is a natural food of copepod, one of species of zooplankton. While in aquaculture, it is used as natural feed for Rotifers and shrimp larvae. In addition, chaetoceros species are included in the saprobes group, which acts as a biological indicator of polluted waters, so their presence in the sea is quite important. The purpose of this study was to identify phytoplankton species from the genus of chaetoceros which has an important function in aquaculture. The research was carried out by taking samples of seawater and phytoplankton on the surface of the water body (0-50 cm) in the sea waters of Padelegan Pamekasan Village. Sampling time was carried out in the morning, afternoon and evening with two repetitions.using a plankton net with a mesh size of 10 microns. Identification of phytoplankton using an Olympz BX41 microscope with 10x magnification. Based on result, 12 species of Chaetoceros have been found with an abundance of 700–9100 ind/L. At night, no chaetoceros species were found because the limiting factor for microalgae growth was sunlight. The more sunlight that enters the waters, the more phytoplankton are scattered.
